  • ILLUST: Ineffective resolutions (I don’t usually discuss resolutions, but this year…)
Top ones? - Exercise, eating healthy, physical health, saving money
What governs which ones you decide on?
The ones that you know are important and would really be good
    So what happens?
Each takes effort… (that gym is open…the food is available…shoes still work for walking… banks are still open…)
Be thinking - slips of paper later

    Aspects of Biblical Promises

    READ Matt 28:10-20

    Weakness of Human Promises

    Israel - Moses
Ex. 19 - All that the Lord has spoken (commanded), we will do - Ex 19:8
    Exodus 19:8 NASB95
All the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do!” And Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord.
Yahweh had just reminded them of what He did for them, “how I brought you out Myself…” (look at passage…)
    Ex. 32 - Golden calf
Yahweh: “They have quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them” - and…the response to which was, “we’ll do all You have spoken” - forgot?
    Israel - Joshua
    Joshua 1:16 NASB95
They answered Joshua, saying, “All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.
Yahweh is showing them how He makes good on His promises, the Promised Land is theirs now
They do good for a while, conquest of the Land, though not completed, and…
    Still...They needed reminding
    Joshua 24:15 NASB95
“If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
They saw all God did for them and with them, and yet they wavered…
Then their idolatry as a people led to exile, captive in Babylon
    Jesus and Disciples
The disciples made a bold promise…Peter especially
    Matthew 26:33 NASB95
But Peter said to Him, “Even though all may fall away because of You, I will never fall away.”
He was RESOLUTE - He meant it, and…
I could go on an on about examples of people failing to keep promises
I don’t feel better looking at their failures
I see strong followers of Yahweh, battling the flesh
    Better to look at…

    Assurance of Jesus’ Promises

More than just “predictions come true”
What God said He would do, He did
What God says He does, He does
What God says He will do, He will do
Though, His promises are typically coupled with commands
    Exodus 14:14 NASB95
“The Lord will fight for you while you keep silent.”
But, look at verse 15 - Ex 14:15
    Exodus 14:15 NASB95
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the sons of Israel to go forward.
His promises are what back our faith
Jesus coupled reassuring promises followed by commands - actually, He flips it a bit, the assurance follows the command
    Matthew 28:19–20 NASB95
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
His promise (I am with you) should be the foundation of our faith
    Our trust to take action
A HUGE Command backed by the HUGE-est promise
    John 3:3 NASB95
Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
    John 3:7 NASB95
“Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
A choice, a command with eternal consequence
Jesus said you must be born again to enter the kingdom of God
    Truth - He said it
So….if you are born again, you are a citizen of Heaven - DONE!
    YET…Salvation is just the start

    Our Promises to God

    “This year…I’m gonna…”
I’m going to join a gym, buy some weights, take more magnesium…
DONE - membership signed, paid for, weights ordered, supplements…
Now what…? I have to go, I have to make changes, adjust priorities
I’m going to eat healthier - I said it, I feel better
Now what…? I have to make changes, adjust priorities
    Spiritually
“i really want to grow, I have a plan”
“I got a new Bible, a new Study Bible.’
    DONE - Now what…?
And on and on and on…
Big plans often lead to big disappointment
    How about:
    TODAY…I will… - then repeat tomorrow
    Matthew 28:19–20 NASB95
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Here is what God has given to us to accomplish - make disciples
GO - “as you are going”
Start at home, start with your family, start with you
Teach others to follow His commands
You cannot do that if you are not
    We need to:
    Forget resolutions
And focus on remembering what God has done
    Move beyond just making promises
And start letting the HS guide us
Typical areas we want to, or say we want to, improve
    Be more faithful at church
    Be in the Bible
    Focused prayer time
    Faithful, leading husband
    Faithful, supportive wife
    Faithful, Biblically-driven parents
And more….of course, these are easy to promise, easy to say
(PAUSE - Take time to write down 2 or 3 areas you are willing to commit to this year, on the small papers)
    Many New Year sermons
“So, what did you accomplish for God this past year?”
“How many souls will you reach this year?’
    Guilt trips, what they are
God does not deal in guilt trips
Resolutions, promises we make, often tied to guilt and internal threats
God simply lays out for us, as He always has
What He has done! And that needs to be sufficient for us
    You buy the gym membership
They are not coming to pick you up and force you
    You get some healthy food
Nobody is coming to cook it for you
You buy a great study Bible or other devotional
    You get the idea
    Practical advice, from the faithful
Prayer - Daniel - decide to pray regularly - make it happen, each day, just focus on the day at hand - Daniel 6:10
    Daniel 6:10 NASB95
and he continued kneeling on his knees three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God, as he had been doing previously.
Time in the Word - Bereans -- examined Scriptures daily, just focus on the day at hand - Acts 17:11
    Acts 17:11 NASB95
Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.
Involvement in Church - Hebrews 10:25
    Hebrews 10:25 NASB95
not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
I do promise this…IF you embrace these “habits”
If you respond to what God has done for you in these three ways (prayer, Word, church)
You will grow - you WILL
How much do you want to?
None of these can be forced
    No guilt trips, either
However you need to remind yourself…
…Start each day, remembering what God has done
…Then these life-changing activities will become part of, or more a part of, your spiritual life
Opportunities - there for you - what will you do with them, in 2026?
