OPEN Q - Have you ever been to a boring worship service?
    Careful…
How you answer that may demonstrate your understanding of the word
Can you worship when you are not in church?
Reality - you are basically, always, worshiping
Reality - you (everyone) worship one of two options - self or God
    READ Psalm 95
    Psalm 95:6 NASB95
Come, let us worship and bow down, Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
    (Also, carry into Psalm 96)
Where are you with worshiping God?

    1) Worship Defined

One of those words hard to define without using the word
Like “humble”, (humility is the fact of being humble)
Biblically - worship can be defined in a “position”
Bowed down, prostrate, presenting self as less in stature than the object of that worship
    Worship, from “worth-ship”
Biblically - honoring God, giving Him reverence, because HE is worth it
Worship may best be defined/described as responding to God’s very presence and actions
Position of worship - Bible examples
    Honor, submission, respect
    Yahweh’s glory fills the temple
    David’s congregation bowing in worship
Magi bow before the Child Jesus
Men in boat after Peter walks on water
Phil 2:10 - every knee will bow, showing respect, saved and unsaved
In the Biblical languages, especially Hebrew
    “Bowing” and “serve” = worship
    Response to God’s presence/action
Understanding His greatness produces desire to worship
Is “desire to worship God” who you are?
    Other actions of worship
Paul and Silas singing in prison
Stephen defending Christ before being stoned to death
On and on and on - hundreds of examples

    2) Purpose/Importance of Worship

    PURPOSE
    Created to worship
    Isaiah 43:7 NASB95
Everyone who is called by My name, And whom I have created for My glory, Whom I have formed, even whom I have made.”
    Psalm 150:6 NASB95
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise 1the Lord!
Purpose of worship - to demonstrate honor to the Creator
To experience and enjoy union with God
    IMPORTANCE
The importance of worship to the early church:
    Acts 2:42 NASB95
They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and ato prayer.
ALL of this, in what we would see as a worship “service” - all the components are elements of worship
Thus, we typically connect “worship” with a church service - not wrong, and not complete, either
As in our opening question - let’s move away from confining worship to a service, or even the pieces of that service
Even still, there was a CONTINUAL devotion of selves
Together as a church family - since we are thinking in terms of a service like this…
Just how crucial is proper worship? So important, God expects us to come to worship “clean” with one another.
    Matthew 5:23 NASB95
“Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
    Matthew 5:24 NASB95
leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your 1offering.
POINT- worship, corporate or otherwise, is to be taken seriously, considered seriously, with worldly distractions aside
ASIDE - Our worship service - every aspect from prayer to prayer
A group reached out, offering to come and provide “worship”
People ask, “what kind of worship do you do at your church?” Worship of God??
Where are you in worshiping God?

    3) How/When Do I Worship?

Let’s turn this to the practical…
    HOW
Come to church, right? Sing, pray, give offering, Lord’s Supper, fellowship
You are here - 1-1.5 hours a week, maybe 2.5 or 3 if you are here Wednesdays
maybe 4.5 if you are also here Sunday evenings with Awana
But are we worshiping on Wednesdays? Sunday nights?
At home - Bible, prayer, those are pretty clear
At work - could also take time to pray, Bible
Is worship more than prayer, Bible, church? And…
Psalm 95, must we bow down to call it worship?
    David danced to worship
People stood to pray and sing
    Just what is ACCEPTABLE worship?
You know you are worshiping when you know you are, when your mind is set and focused on God
First, make sure, God, and God alone, is the object of your worship
    Matthew 4:10 NASB95
Then Jesus *said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’ ”
Believers have the Holy Spirit to guide us to worship
    John 4:23 NASB95
“But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.
Hard to define just “how” - so how about…
    WHEN to worship
Closeness to God - our expressions of worship - extends into every area of life, every day
When you sense the presence of God, in everything that occurs
Answered prayer, start to see blessings in what others do
    (Extension of our Airbnb…) - thanks, goodness…
Response to trouble, hardship, even tragedy - express your needs to God, this, too, is worship
Someone asks you to pray, knowing you will - worship
You hug your wife or husband, your kids - thanks, worship
Thanks for daily provision, that cereal in the bowl, those eggs on the plate, that furnace that works, that person who will come fix it when it does not - worship
There WILL be times you do feel the need to bow, kneel, present yourself humbly to the LORD
Worship in the Bible often focuses on the big, important events
Those same people lived daily, with families, friends, strangers
    Worship occurs when:
You respond to God’s greatness - His greatness fills, you, believer
Worship is also what others see:
Colton Dixon - paraphrase - “The lost around us, the “less serious” Christians around us, are making decisions about God, based on what we show them related to how we feel about God.”
ILLUST: Smiling, theme parks, lots of fake and quick smiles
Christians, we smile here, how about out there? Just thinking on God?
Worship, everyday, looks like joy, and joy looks like you are confident in Christ
It starts with understanding God’s greatness
This understanding produces a desire to worship
Could be amazing events that happen
Could be, will be, the “small” daily activities
Let God’s presence fill them all!
    Let’s be real…
How do I worship God when I don’t feel like it?
Psalms are alive with people frustrated, upset, down, aggravated
    Feel distant?
Scripture shows people feeling far from God
    Feelings/emotions - God-given
    Great motivators, poor masters
Acknowledge them, then focus on the facts of your position with God
    Where are you with God?
Where are you with His Word?
    Romans 8:38 NASB95
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor athings present, nor things to come, nor powers,
In and through all of it, every day - Your Savior is there!
The same Savior who knows you, every part of you…
The same Savior who offered Himself for you…
The same Savior who knows your hurt, your pain, your frustration, your achievements, your highs and lows…
The same Savior who will never, ever leave you…
The same Savior who CANNOT be separated from you…
    Romans 8:39 NASB95
nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Calls you to a life of worship, of Him
Praise, Honor Him - enjoy His presence
If you feel you cannot, still continue to desire Him, devote life to Him
Worship is not based on feelings, but facts - WHO JESUS IS; WHO JESUS IS TO YOU
    CLOSE:
If…you desire to be close to God, you get close to His Word, you will realize more and more how you desire to worship Him
Worship is to be a daily way of life - that “bowed-down” posture in your heart…
    Is it yours?
Where are you in worshiping God?
