Anyway…we’ve finished a series, looking at our overall spiritual health…
Where am I?
How important is it to have a strong Biblical walk?
How important to you, is the health of this church?
God called me here, to care for this flock
The health of this flock is my responsibility
A healthy church needs a healthy foundation - the Word
I wholeheartedly believe that we are on that firm foundation
That very Word, then, points to two strong New Testament principles
Two major components
Membership and Service
Each important, and they go hand-in-hand
Early church, church founded by Jesus, was marked by:
Faithfulness to the church, love for each other, service among each other
These are both Biblical expectations and assumptions
As the pastor, I am Biblically reminded and required to encourage both
Membership
Clearly shown in 1 Cor. 6 and 1 Cor. 12 (besides Acts 2)
Ch. 6, unrepentant man, mired in sin; Paul assumes membership, and church has responsibility to help him repent and be restored - the man appears in 2 Cor., repentant, restored
Church membership meant something, it was expected and assumed
1 Corinthians 12:12 NASB95
For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.
Body has many members, that church is Christ’s body, and that body has members
This is one church, intended by Jesus to have many members, parts
Membership means
I belong here
I am connected here
I have a role here

Service
As for current members…
Every member has a function - just like parts of a body
Ephesians 4:16 NASB95
from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.
Growth occurs when every part supplies function
Growth occurs when every member supplies service
This church will grow healthier when members serve
Service is normal in a healthy church
Churches don’t grow due to marketing campaigns
Churches grow because members step up
Growth is a matter of maturity
1 Peter 4:10 NASB95
As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
Each one used the gift he/she had
Overall, the church today is passive, never the intention of the local church
Today’s average church:
Get saved (maybe)
Show up, feel good, go home
Hebrews 10:24 NASB95
and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds,
Urge one another to love and to serve, and don’t stop

Where will you help?
Sunday night example
I’d LOVE to have an adult Bible study while kids are in Awana
But those who would show up are already serving in Awana
Which is a crucial ministry
And one which needs more to serve
We get kids from other churches, so that THEIR adults can have a Bible study or church service
I want both, but cannot have both - so then what?
Other items - pray about and over them
Members, here is your responsibility:
Pray faithfully
Give faithfully
Serve faithfully
Be discipled, and make disciples
Are you supplying what God needs you to supply?
Membership and Service
We can be healthier
Maybe that’s on me, how effective I am being with these areas - something I am praying about, seeking wisdom
I can tell you what I want, what I expect, but that doesn’t matter
Maybe it will matter to know what God wants and expects
He wants and expects us to grow
