  • A promise too good to be true - winning a radio contest, randomly
We won - I had to claim the prize; but what was the catch?
All I had to do was pick it up, and then enjoy it
We did, and now I forgot what it was…
Many legitimate prizes go unclaimed - probably due to scams…
People reject God’s promise of salvation, every day, feeling there is a catch
The “catch” is enjoying the gift, the promise fulfilled, living surrendered to God
Even then, God does the changing in you
Claim that promise, and let Him change you
    RESURRECTION DAY
The cross, the crucifixion was done
    Saturday came and went
    The cross was done.
The tomb was empty, still is!
    Jesus is alive!
    Now what…???

    1) The Promise Made

To Adam and Eve - Genesis 3:15
To Abraham - Genesis 12, solidified in Genesis 15
God had made Abraham a promise
A land, a nation, a seed (THE seed)
From Abraham’s own flesh and blood would eventually come the Messiah
READ Genesis 15:1-18 - God’s confirmation to Abraham that He meant what He said
    Great Resurrection Day passage, right?
The resurrection is the ultimate promise made
The Messiah would come and deliver
In the process, as told to Adam and Eve, and Satan - a bruised heel vs the crushed head, defeat of Satan and sin
Explaining the passage - The covenant with Abraham
Most covenants, promises, agreements, were two-way, each partner agreeing
A covenant was cut (like we say we cut a deal…)
Animals were cut into pieces, a bloody sight
The pieces formed two sides of a walkway
    The parties walked through them
“If either of us breaks the covenant, may it be on us like these animals”
    But…this covenant with Abraham
Abraham is in a sleep, and he sees Yahweh walk this cut covenant alone
This is God’s promise - the Messiah will come
Nothing you need to do to make it happen
Nothing you can do to not make it happen
    It’s done
And the promise comes with a price
Neither Abraham nor anyone else can do anything to deserve this great promise
And this promise was necessitated by mankind sinning
That would eventually have to be paid for
Animal sacrifices only covered sin - not satisfied the penalty
There would need to be a singular culminating sacrifice - the seed of Abraham
Abraham had faith, counted as righteousness

    2) The Promise Ignored

With the promise of Messiah came the expectation of faith shown in repentance - expression of thanks
    Isaiah 1:16 NASB95
“Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight. Cease to do evil,”
    Jeremiah 7:3 NASB95
Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Amend your ways and your deeds…”
    Ezekiel 33:11 NASB95
“Say to them,…Turn back, turn back from your evil ways!…’”
    Joel 2:12 NASB95
“Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “Return to Me with all your heart,…”
    Matthew 3:2 NASB95
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (JTB)
    Even Messiah Himself…
    Mark 1:15 NASB95
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
But people have always done evil, always done what they felt right in their own eyes
    Those hearing the prophets:
It’s OK, God loves us; protect our nation, our people…
    Those hearing Jesus:
Heal me, feed me, help me…
    SAVE US!
That was/is exactly His plan, only His salvation was not of this world
And His salvation is tied to repentance
You repent, and I’ll forgive and save you - promise
To not repent is to ignore the promise
To not trust God’s plan, is to ignore the promise

    3) The Promise Kept

Over 100 prophecies fulfilled by Jesus
    Galatians 4:4 NASB95
But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law,
    Galatians 4:5 NASB95
so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
TODAY - We celebrate the Resurrection - this was part of the promise, prophetically
    1 Corinthians 15:3–4 NASB95
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
This is not Paul’s teaching, this is the Word, Paul just repeats it
This is not MY teaching, I am just repeating it
    Psalm 22, Isaiah 53, Hosea 6:2, Psalm 16:10 - others…
    Prophecy fulfilled - Promise kept - SO….
    1 Corinthians 15:34 NASB95
Become sober-minded as you ought, and stop sinning; for some have no knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.
    “Stop sinning” = REPENT!
The promise has been kept, the response is the same - by faith - Trust Christ!
SO. what about this covenant - this promise?
“Cutting the covenant” - God did it, the promising
    Jesus did it
    He knew we could not
For us to fulfill HIS promise would be for us to be able to save ourselves
    He knew we could not
He knew you and I could not
The covenant with Abraham was one-way promise - it was Yahweh making the promise and keeping it; irrevocable
And Jesus paid the price - because there IS a price, a cost, to the promise
Sacrifice had to die for the promise to be kept
And Jesus, God Himself, walked that covenant
Jesus, walked that 650 yards from Fortress Antonio to Golgotha
And then…JESUS WALKED OUT OF THAT TOMB!
Someone here needs to hear this:
Why are you trying to do this yourself?
Get through this life without Jesus? That will only end in ruin
But Pastor, I’m not good enough, I just can’t be good enough for God
CORRECT - You are not good enough, you can’t be “good enough”
Jesus already said that and knows that!
So He made good on His Word
Jesus would suffer, be torn apart, as the penalty for the covenant being broken by sin
    Own that, admit that, REPENT
Jesus has paid the price - IT IS FINISHED
Sin comes with a price - He paid it for you
Sin leads to death - Jesus defeated that, too
    The payment is done
Validated by walking out of that tomb! The Resurrection
Trust Him, that payment is done
He would love to apply that payment to you, today
    Some here feel “religious”
You are a good person, you go to church, good neighbor, friend, all around decent person, doing the best you can
If you have never personally admitted your sin and asked God for forgiveness, you live with a false sense of security
    Make it personal, today
    The Resurrection
Jesus resurrected to show it can be done
    Sure, to conquer death, and…
He also showed the glorious resurrected life that is available to all who believe
    is that you?
Will you receive the promised gift?
    CLOSING
Going to have an opportunity to come forward, to kneel and pray, to repent and trust Jesus as your Savior
    (Gospel challenge)
The empty tomb proved He is alive - just like He said and promised
    Every promise made, kept
One more big promise to come
He is returning, for His believers
Is that you? You can decide that today.
