- A promise too good to be true - winning a radio contest, randomlyWe won - I had to claim the prize; but what was the catch? All I had to do was pick it up, and then enjoy itWe did, and now I forgot what it was…Many legitimate prizes go unclaimed - probably due to scams…People reject God’s promise of salvation, every day, feeling there is a catchThe “catch” is enjoying the gift, the promise fulfilled, living surrendered to GodEven then, God does the changing in youClaim that promise, and let Him change youRESURRECTION DAYThe cross, the crucifixion was doneSaturday came and wentThe cross was done. The tomb was empty, still is!Jesus is alive! Now what…???1) The Promise MadeTo Adam and Eve - Genesis 3:15To Abraham - Genesis 12, solidified in Genesis 15God had made Abraham a promiseA land, a nation, a seed (THE seed)From Abraham’s own flesh and blood would eventually come the MessiahREAD Genesis 15:1-18 - God’s confirmation to Abraham that He meant what He saidGreat Resurrection Day passage, right? The resurrection is the ultimate promise madeThe Messiah would come and deliverIn the process, as told to Adam and Eve, and Satan - a bruised heel vs the crushed head, defeat of Satan and sinExplaining the passage - The covenant with AbrahamMost covenants, promises, agreements, were two-way, each partner agreeingA covenant was cut (like we say we cut a deal…)Animals were cut into pieces, a bloody sightThe pieces formed two sides of a walkwayThe parties walked through them“If either of us breaks the covenant, may it be on us like these animals”But…this covenant with AbrahamAbraham is in a sleep, and he sees Yahweh walk this cut covenant aloneThis is God’s promise - the Messiah will comeNothing you need to do to make it happenNothing you can do to not make it happenIt’s doneAnd the promise comes with a priceNeither Abraham nor anyone else can do anything to deserve this great promiseAnd this promise was necessitated by mankind sinningThat would eventually have to be paid forAnimal sacrifices only covered sin - not satisfied the penaltyThere would need to be a singular culminating sacrifice - the seed of AbrahamAbraham had faith, counted as righteousness2) The Promise IgnoredWith the promise of Messiah came the expectation of faith shown in repentance - expression of thanks
Isaiah 1:16 NASB95 “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight. Cease to do evil,”Jeremiah 7:3 NASB95 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Amend your ways and your deeds…”Ezekiel 33:11 NASB95 “Say to them,…Turn back, turn back from your evil ways!…’”Joel 2:12 NASB95 “Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “Return to Me with all your heart,…”Matthew 3:2 NASB95 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (JTB)Even Messiah Himself…Mark 1:15 NASB95 “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”But people have always done evil, always done what they felt right in their own eyesThose hearing the prophets:It’s OK, God loves us; protect our nation, our people…Those hearing Jesus:Heal me, feed me, help me…SAVE US!That was/is exactly His plan, only His salvation was not of this worldAnd His salvation is tied to repentanceYou repent, and I’ll forgive and save you - promiseTo not repent is to ignore the promiseTo not trust God’s plan, is to ignore the promise3) The Promise KeptOver 100 prophecies fulfilled by JesusGalatians 4:4 NASB95 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law,Galatians 4:5 NASB95 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.TODAY - We celebrate the Resurrection - this was part of the promise, prophetically1 Corinthians 15:3–4 NASB95 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,This is not Paul’s teaching, this is the Word, Paul just repeats itThis is not MY teaching, I am just repeating itPsalm 22, Isaiah 53, Hosea 6:2, Psalm 16:10 - others…Prophecy fulfilled - Promise kept - SO….1 Corinthians 15:34 NASB95 Become sober-minded as you ought, and stop sinning; for some have no knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.“Stop sinning” = REPENT!The promise has been kept, the response is the same - by faith - Trust Christ!SO. what about this covenant - this promise?“Cutting the covenant” - God did it, the promisingJesus did itHe knew we could notFor us to fulfill HIS promise would be for us to be able to save ourselvesHe knew we could notHe knew you and I could notThe covenant with Abraham was one-way promise - it was Yahweh making the promise and keeping it; irrevocableAnd Jesus paid the price - because there IS a price, a cost, to the promiseSacrifice had to die for the promise to be keptAnd Jesus, God Himself, walked that covenantJesus, walked that 650 yards from Fortress Antonio to GolgothaAnd then…JESUS WALKED OUT OF THAT TOMB!Someone here needs to hear this:Why are you trying to do this yourself?Get through this life without Jesus? That will only end in ruinBut Pastor, I’m not good enough, I just can’t be good enough for GodCORRECT - You are not good enough, you can’t be “good enough”Jesus already said that and knows that!So He made good on His WordJesus would suffer, be torn apart, as the penalty for the covenant being broken by sinOwn that, admit that, REPENTJesus has paid the price - IT IS FINISHEDSin comes with a price - He paid it for youSin leads to death - Jesus defeated that, tooThe payment is doneValidated by walking out of that tomb! The ResurrectionTrust Him, that payment is doneHe would love to apply that payment to you, todaySome here feel “religious”You are a good person, you go to church, good neighbor, friend, all around decent person, doing the best you canIf you have never personally admitted your sin and asked God for forgiveness, you live with a false sense of securityMake it personal, todayThe ResurrectionJesus resurrected to show it can be doneSure, to conquer death, and…He also showed the glorious resurrected life that is available to all who believeis that you? Will you receive the promised gift?CLOSINGGoing to have an opportunity to come forward, to kneel and pray, to repent and trust Jesus as your Savior(Gospel challenge)The empty tomb proved He is alive - just like He said and promisedEvery promise made, keptOne more big promise to comeHe is returning, for His believersIs that you?
