  • ILLUST: Forgiveness example - Deleting emails, also have to empty the trash; those emails are never called to mind by me
Confession - difficult, humbling, necessary, necessary for repentance
Forgiveness - difficult, humbling, necessary, necessary for relationships to thrive
    Both are crucial
But… “Forgive and forget” - not Bible
“I’ll never forgive…” - also, not the Biblical example
Bible word is “Remember” as in “Remember no more”
A great promise in the Bible - Jeremiah 31:34 - “The days are coming…” (new covenant)
    Jeremiah 31:34 NASB95
“for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
    The Meaning/Application of Forgiveness
    Between God and us
    Between and among us
We last looked at the “7 A’s of Confession/Repentance”
    READ Matthew 9:1-8; Ephesians 4:1-2, 32
“It is finished” means He can say “I forgive you”
    Laying aside the old self
The new self forgives, because without forgiveness, there is no new self
So here we are, a bunch of “new-selfers” managing life together…
It is EASY - to sever a relationship, when there is offense/hurt
It is DIFFICULT - to mend a relationship when forgiveness is needed
Today: Now what? What goes into “I forgive you”?
    Ephesians 4:32 NASB95
Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.
    Colossians 3:13 NASB95
bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.
    Matthew 6:14 NASB95
“For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
    Luke 11:4 NASB95
‘And forgive us our sins, For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.’ ”
    Matthew 18:22 NASB95
Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.
It seems forgiveness is important to God
ASIDE, sometimes someone offends you, and it is able to simple be covered by love,
    1 Peter 4:8 NASB95
Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.
TODAY - when someone asks forgiveness…you respond with…
“I FORGIVE YOU” - this is loaded

    Four Promises of Forgiveness

    1) I will not think about this incident

“Don’t think about__________” it’s all you tink about, right?? :)
From God to us - When you repent, God no longer characterizes you as a sinner, not identified by your misstep - now SAINT
Go back to Jeremiah 31:34 - “remember no more”
Brought up, quoted, as reminder in Hebrews 8:12
    Hebrews 8:12 NASB95
For I will be merciful to their iniquities, And I will remember their sins no more.”
    Remember = “call to mind”
So…better to say, I will not REMEMBER this incident…
When God forgives, He is not continually dwelling on your sin
God has not forgotten about the sin, God does not forget; though He considers you forgiven
Among us - difficult to not think about incidents
    This forgiveness is hard work
This is a promise we make to others, when we forgive
Because this is how God treats us
    And it’s hard
And it’s OK, when thoughts creep in - God knows this is difficult
It’s BEAUTIFUL when you do this
See that person you forgive as being forgiven - by you
And realize how amazingly special that makes you

    2) I will not bring this incident up again and hold it against you

    From God to us
    God does not hold grudges
When He forgives, you are declared NOT GUILTY
    Romans 5:1 NASB95
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
    Romans 8:1 NASB95
Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
When you are forgiven by God, it is forgiven, it is done
Christ’s finished work on the cross says so
    Among us
If God does not hold grudges, then neither do we
When I forgive you, this incident, this matter, WILL NOT COME UP AGAIN
If you think on it, that’s on you
But it will not come up again from my perspective
Again, this is hard - we who still sin, tend to see people as sinners
Let’s start seeing surrendered believers as saints

    3) I will not talk to others about this incident

    From God to us
He does not talk to you about others’ sin
He talks to you about yours
Forgiveness is settled with God - between me and Him, between you and Him
    Reconciled - that’s the term
    2 Corinthians 5:18 NASB95
Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation,
Your forgiveness is what restores relationship with God
    Among us
When I forgive you, it is between you and me
When you forgive someone, that is between you and that person
    Any other conversation is gossip
“He sinned against me, but I forgave him, so we are good.” HARD STOP - No!
The Lord knows, that’s good enough
You know, the other person knows, and God knows.

    4) I will not allow this incident to stand between us

Oh, my, Satan would love for this to happen
Satan hates that God forgives! Hallelujah!
    From God to us
REM - God does not “forget” sin - He just chooses to not remember it
You are clean when you are forgiven
Forgiveness strengthens our relationship with God
It is WHY we can have friendship and fellowship with God!
CLEAR depiction of God and His love
    Romans 5:8 NASB95
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Psalm 139 - Read it, God knows us, inside and out
AND HE LOVES US AND FORGIVES US
When He says He forgives you, there is nothing He puts between you and Him - forever!
    Among us
    Forgiveness between friends strengthens friendships
Forgiveness between husband and wife strengthens marriage
Forgiveness between believers strengthens the church
Forgiveness between family members, spouses, strengthens the family
Do you see why Satan hates forgiveness??
With forgiveness comes strong families, strong churches, strong friendships
    CLOSE
    Forgiveness - IMO
The most crucial doctrine in Scripture!
We cannot live without it - literally, eternally
I want to close with two POWERFUL passages in Scripture, that keep me going when I fell less-than-worthy
I am so thankful for those around me who have forgiven me
I am so thankful for people who have accepted my forgiveness
I am so thankful for my LORD and SAVIOR - who accepted my repentance and forgives me
Let the world say what it will - let the world judge us silly for engaging in forgiveness
Let Satan fully realize that when God forgives you, Your very soul is the Lord’s - forever
Oh, the enemy will try to keep you from forgiving others - and Satan is thrilled when believers will not forgive
Actually, believers forgive, they just do - hard as it is.
    1 John 3:19 NASB95
We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will assure our heart before Him
    1 John 3:20 NASB95
in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things.
    Romans 8:38 NASB95
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,
    Romans 8:39 NASB95
nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Forgiveness - Praise the LORD for forgiveness
    it’s important to God!
It should be important to us!
