ILLUST: On paper - coffee spilling when bumped - why? Because the cup was full of coffee. What spills out when bumped is what it is full of
Spiritually, when life bumps you, what spills out? What are you full of?
    Anchor verses today:
    1 Corinthians 1:18 NASB95
For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
    2 Corinthians 2:15 NASB95
    For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing;
    On being saved
?. Similar - married? Got married, are married…
Salvation is permanent, and also a daily, active experience
Believers, by the power of the Holy Spirit, grow more like Jesus, every day (sanctification)
Salvation is past, present, and future
Have been saved, are being saved, will be glorified
    READ 1 Thess 5:16-18
Every one of these verbs, imperatives, commands
Continual, part of life, present tense

    1) Rejoice

    Always
Paul was in prison - Phil 4:4
    Philippians 4:4 NASB95
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!
“I rejoice in You, Lord, for maintaining control”
“I sing your praises, Lord, for being there for me”
    That hurt of hurts
    That crushing blow
    That overwhelmed life
    2 Corinthians 6:10 NASB95
as sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet making many rich, as having nothing yet possessing all things.
    “Always” includes the positive, too…
    “Rejoice”
    That good job
    That new house
    That growing family
    Money in the bank
    Health
    “Rejoice”
    This is God’s Word
Paul wrote it, knowing you needed the reminder
    …the world is not improving
Paul wrote it, knowing that it was possible
Paul wrote it, as this is God’s instruction

    2) Pray

    Without ceasing
Pray to the Father, recognizing His holiness, tell Him
Pray confessing, owning your need for Him
    Pray for others (interceding)
Pray for your daily needs (supplication)
Pray, without ceasing - a continual mindset
Can you be ready to pray, at any time of the day, when called upon to pray
    This is God’s Word
Paul wrote it, knowing you needed the reminder
Paul wrote it, knowing that it was possible
Paul wrote it, as this is God’s instruction
Prayer is the ONLY way to encourage joy and thankfulness - in times of trial

    3) Give Thanks

    In everything
REALITY - there is nothing that should be considered “bad” for a Christian
Because God is always present and in control
    This is NOT “be thankful”
GIVE thanks - express thanks, let thanks pour from you
How do you say “thanks” in all circumstances
Thank You, for correction, pain, comfort…
‘Thank you, Lord, for being in control”
    This is God’s Word
Paul wrote it, knowing you needed the reminder
Paul wrote it, knowing that it was possible
Paul wrote it, as this is God’s instruction
    Give thanks in everything
Give thanks for your salvation - start there
    The toaster works
There are eggs in the fridge
    The car started
    My socks are dry…
Look around, really, today, look around and GIVE THANKS
    GIVE THANKS!
    Philippians 2:14 NASB95
    Do all things without grumbling or disputing;
    (Read the whole passage)
    Romans 1:21 NASB95
For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
The lost, characterized by not giving thanks; believers give thanks
Giving thanks in everything - a mindset
Finding the good in every situation
(NOT - “it could be worse”)
Truly - What will God do in this situation? How will God cause THIS to come together for good, for me, as one who loves Him?
When Paul also says this - Phil 4:13
    Philippians 4:13 NASB95
I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
Paul means that he can deal with all circumstances, because he has the strength from Christ, the risen Savior. That’s the context…
He could do all things…you, too
Here is why I KNOW you can do all these things
Maybe you need the reminder, believers
You are continually, actively, being saved!
Jesus is KEEPING you saved - right now!
    CAMP HERE a minute - 2 Cor 2:15
    2 Corinthians 2:15 NASB95
    For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing;
This world is split into two peoples -
    Those who are being saved
    Those who are perishing
Believers - you live in a continual state of being saved
Unbelievers - live in a continual state of perishing (we’d love to see you switch sides)
That “aroma” of believers - right here…
REJOICE - PRAY - GIVE THANKS
Be sad, happy, angry without sinning - and yet rejoice
Be frustrated, own your emotions - and pray
Stay alert of the world around you, understand that this life is difficult - and give thanks
    OH, yeah…forgot to mention
    1 Thessalonians 5:18 NASB95
….for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
    This is God’s will!
This is what He desires for you
He will not force it. He will not
Rejoicing, praying, thanking, this is your response to Him, in relationship with Him
How does this help my spiritual growth?
SUMMARY of these three groups of verses
Verses 12-15 - actions and attitudes toward others
Verses 19-22 - actions and attitudes toward others
Verses 16-18 - here - actions and attitudes toward God
    Luke 6:45 NASB95
“The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.
What fills your heart is what comes forth
Our actions, our hearts must start with and be centered on our relationship to God through Christ
So…how does this help my spiritual growth?
    What’s in it for me?
When you rejoice, you praise, and when you praise, you are not complaining, murmuring…
When you pray, you are talking to God, and your focus is on Him - when you stay constantly ready to pray, you are that effectual prayer
    James 5:16 NASB95
….The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
When you give Him thanks, you are not focused on what all went wrong, what you don’t have, what you should have gotten….how life is unfair - your focus is on His goodness to you
So….when you are busy doing these, continually, guess what?
You have less time to stray, less time to sin, less time to be conformed to this world
And more time to be transformed by Him
The Rejoicing, Praying, Thankful believer contributes to church growth and health
The Rejoicing, Praying, Thankful believer is the one you want to be around
Victories in this life - won by believers who are oyful, prayerful, thankful.
    (Closing challenge on paper)
    You’ll get bumped by life
What spills out is what is in you.
