  • ILLUST: Following the wrong one
    You are headed to a remote place, retreat
    Five different cars following the leader, who thinks he knows the way, but he doesn’t; he makes a wrong turn
    Those following trusted that leader, and now they are all lost
    Sincere or not, the leader was wrong
    Deception does not always look ugly
    Same for spiritual deception
    It ALWAYS needs to check up against God’s Word
    READ 2 Thess 2:1-12 (focus on 6-12)

    Big question - do YOU believe?
    Not missed the Rapture, Jesus is coming for us
    All is good and right…

    What About Evil?

    Evil is still present, though restrained - may not seem like it
    verses 6-7
    The Holy Spirit restrains evil now - How???
    The Church!
    The Spirit working through believers
    When removed, all hell breaks loose - literally hell on earth
    God is still sovereign
    And “the mystery of lawlessness is already at work” (from passage)
    The MAN of lawlessness, not yet
    Be careful of :
    Being careless - “the end is not near, so it doesn’t matter how I live”
    Panic - “evil is winning, everything is out of control”
    Nothing happens outside of God’s appointed time or control
    POINT -The world is not spiraling out of control, it is moving toward God’s grand finale
    And…don’t calculate the day and time, but live faithfully until then
    People assume anything supernatural comes from God
    Careful - Spiritual realm…Evil
    How not to evaluate a spiritual claim (think of some you hear)
    Was it dramatic?
    Emotionally powerful?
    Did something unusual happen?
    Was the speaker/teacher confident?
    DO evaluate it this way:
    Does this agree with the revealed truth of God’s Word?
    Does this exalt Christ?

    Believable Deception

    Three-fold: Deception starts now, worsens in Tribulation, culminates in eternal judgment
    Presently (let no one “deceive” you) - v. 3
    Mystery of lawlessnes, an external strike
    Targets the mind - bad theology, rumors
    Believers are told to actively STOP this - preventative
    Tribulation (“deception” of wickedness) - vv 9-10
    The activity of Satan - Restrainer is removed
    Moral seduction, lure of pleasure
    This affects those who refused to love the truth (v. 10)
    The mind follows what the heart desires
    Jeremiah 17:9 NASB95
    “The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it?
    (Jesus warned against this, too)
    Matthew 15:19 NASB95
    “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.
    Eternal judgment (deluding influence) - vv 11-12
    Toward end of Trib - people choose the pleasure of the lie, the hatred of God
    God seals their choices (see Romans 1)
    People can no longer see the truth
    (Hailstones in Revelation)

    This spirit of lawlessness is here, has been
    “Get close enough to the water, you’re gonna get wet”
    The bad theology is in the open - “the religious” accepting, embracing, encouraging these immoral practices
    People are empowered, urged to feel good, to “follow their heart”
    At some point, no longer acknowledge God
    We are there
    Also
    Today - False sense of security - the “religious”
    Satan loves religion
    Man being creative to decide how to please God, how to define God according to man’s ideas and foolishness
    There are some really nice people on their way to hell because they believe the lies from the lost leaders teaching them
    Satan rarely asks us to believe something obviously absurd.
    He takes enough truth to earn our confidence, then quietly attaches a lie.
    Adam and Eve, for instance…
    Episcopal “priest” - God is trans
    Biblical discernment means asking not merely, “Does this sound believable?” but, “Is this actually true according to God’s Word?”
    And when it comes to salvation…
    Satan: “Does it make sense, God’s plan of grace, where you cannot earn it?
    God: “My grace is sufficient”
    Satan, through the religions around us, creating false security, believable lies
    Just be good enough, you are a good person
    Get baptized, take communion
    Go to church, feel good
    But if something better or more important comes along, it’s OK, God understands
    PROBLEMS
    The same churches embracing immorality are failing to embrace the truth of the Gospel
    The same churches teaching works-based salvation are doing the same

    So What Can We Do?

    “Somebody” should step up and speak the truth
    Love truth
    Know truth, love truth, speak truth, bank on truth, hold fast to truth
    Practice the truth - LIVE IT
    On the other side…
    People KNOWINGLY reject truth - Romans 1:18
    Romans 1:18 NASB95
    For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
    It’s a moral issue - people reject God’s truth and pleasure in wickedness
    The present spirit of lawlessness
    God will allow people to be deceived, judge them according to the falsehood they choose
    My heart hurts for people who reject the saving truth of the Gospel
    Embracing the lie
    My spirit is angered by false teaching
    People have a fascination with prophecy, often without saving faith
    People:
    Study Revelation
    Debate the timing of Rapture
    Follow Israel events and identify signs
    …and still fail to follow Christ, fail to believe the Gospel
    THOUGHTS
    This is our mission field
    A culture embracing the immorality of everything BUT one man - one woman marriage
    A culture content to feel “religious”
    A culture unable to discern right from wrong
    Those are just a few of the cultural stumbling blocks
    Jesus is the solution
    WHAT CAN WE DO?
    Actually…
    WHAT MUST WE DO?
    NOT wait to trust Christ
    NOT wait to live for Christ
    Satan’s biggest deception (not even a close second)
    Not that Jesus is not God
    Not that Jesus can’t save you
    He KNOWS these are true
    His biggest deception, because you do not and cannot know…
    YOU’VE GOT PLENTY OF TIME
    Trust Christ if you want, but why the hurry?
    Surrender to Christ, maybe tomorrow - the sin is fun today
    Get in to the Word - I’m kinda busy today
    Be faithful in church - eh, the church will be here next week
    Those needing to hear this are not usually here….
    Psalm 90:12 NASB95
    So teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom.
    Be wise today
    Trust Christ, today
    Live for Him, today, tomorrow
    Do this, and the deception will never affect you
    CLOSE
    Sincerity is not the measure of truth
    …remember that when someone tells you God said something...
    What/who are you trusting in?
    Be careful not to trust something God never said would save us
    Church, baptism, good works
    Spiritual deception
    Does it sound right, and does it agree with the Word?
    Plenty of time
    To trust Christ, leave that sin, tell someone else
    Sounds good, feels good, completely reject this
    Don’t put off coming to Him
    If you belong to Him, don’t put off living for Him
    God calls us to respond, today
