- Our Advocate in Glory1. The Full Sermon/Lesson Outline: "Our Advocate in Glory"Series: How to Pray For Others (Week 2)Texts: John 17:9–13; Hebrews 9:24; 2 Timothy 4:16–18INTRODUCTION: THE VACUUM OF HEAVENLY SILENCESomeone approaches you in the lobby, or sends a text, or pulls you aside at the grocery store. They share a heavy burden.Or maybe, everything on the surface looks completely fine, but they look you in the eye and say, "Hey, please pray for me."The Automated Reflex:What is our automated reflex? Too often, it is a dismissive cliché.We say, "I’ll pray for you," and by the time we walk to our cars, we have completely forgotten the request. It becomes a polite way to end a difficult conversation. It costs us nothing. It carries no weight.Or, if we do pray, do we pray from a perspective of deep doubt? We whisper a quick prayer but internally think, "Nothing is really going to change. This situation is too far gone." We treat prayer like a roll of the dice instead of a declaration of faith.Recap Lesson 1:The Context of Crisis: Herod Agrippa I executes James with the sword to score cheap political capital with the religious elite, escalating the crisis by throwing Peter behind humanly insurmountable Roman checkpoints (a 16-soldier quaternion shift with double chains in a dark subterranean cell). The Sound Sleeper: On the literal night before his planned public trial and execution, Peter sleeps deeply shackled between guards because his life is hidden in the peace of the Vinedresser—refusing to let structural impossibility dictate his internal atmosphere. The Stretched-Out Church: Real intercession is defined by the Greek word ektenōs, an athletic term meaning to stretch or strain to maximum structural capacity. True prayer is a sacrificial mode of weight-bearing advocacy where we burn our own time and mental focus to carry someone else's burden. The Bankruptcy of Human Capital: Mary’s aristocratic household possesses massive earthly capital—material wealth, an expansive estate, a pylon gateway, and hired staff. Yet, the moment the state snaps its iron hand down, her money is bankrupt; it cannot bribe a Herodian king or open a Roman lock, forcing the church to shift to total spiritual dependency. The Paralyzing Surprise: When the church's straining prayer triggers a supernatural breakthrough (chains falling, checkpoints cleared, and the outer iron gate opening by itself), they are utterly astonished when a miracle literally knocks on Mary's gate—proving that we frequently treat our trials as permanent and our prayers as a routine, results-blind checklistBut we have to ask the obvious questions:My friends need meMy family needs meMy job needs meMy church needs meMy kidsAll these people need prayer, need God but they come to me!!I’m limited but I’m going to do what I canBut WHAT ABOUT ME—-who is praying for me. I pray for people but when I need people where are they when I need prayer, we I need support, when I need. Where are they.On top of thatBible tells me Not to be AnxiousNot to worryNot to be afraidDoes God truly understands— HOW?? Then on top of that Pray for others. I don’t feel good enough praying for myself.I. THE URGENT AUDITION: THE SERIOUSNESS OF HIS PLEA (John 17:9–13)
John 17:9–13 NIV 9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. 13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.Tells God the Father what he already knows— our roles— All I have is your and all you have is mine — And you GAVE ME THEM — SO they are YOURS.It sounds like a Lawyer!!!! building a caseReconstructing the Passover Environment:The disciples were not sitting at an elevated table in chairs; they were reclining on low cushions wrapped around a central, U-shaped table setting. They had just finished the Passover meal—a deeply solemn, three-hour ritual commemorating how God physically broke the chains of Egypt and brought His people out of bondage. The room is thick with historical tension and spiritual weight. As the party prepares to cross the dark Kidron Valley—a deep, shadowy ravine highly susceptible to tactical ambush—Jesus begins this litigation. And look at the timing. Within mere moments of finishing this prayer, Jesus will lead this small band of men across the dark Kidron Valley—a deep, shadowy ravine that was highly susceptible to military ambushes. He is walking straight into Gethsemane. He knows the betrayal is coming. He knows the trials, the mockings, the Roman scourging, and the raw agony of the cross are waiting for Him.Yet, with His earthly hours ticking away, when His own survival should have been His only focus, look at what Jesus does. He doesn't spend His final hours of freedom in panic. He spends His remaining breath praying for those around Him—US.Linguistic Analysis of Tēreō (τηρέω):John 17:9 NIV 9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.“I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours... Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.”In the narrative framework of John 17:11, where Jesus petitions, "Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name," the select Greek verb is τηρέω (tēreō).Within ancient linguistic systems, this is not a term of passive or delicate pampering. It functions primarily as a military term, indicating an active, highly fortified defense against siege. It means to keep custody of, to guard aggressively, and to preserve intact under hostile watch.Christ's petition is not that his disciples are removed from the war, but that they are fortified so that they do not collapse or defect under the pressure of worldly or demonic pressure.Jesus is telling the Father: "The enemy is setting an ambush. The culture is going to fight them. Demonic forces are going to siege them. So Father, build an ironclad, military fortress around their souls!"Think about what this means for your anxiety today. When you are hit with waves of heart ache, hurt, depression, lack of anything, or when a sudden situation threatens your livelihood, you need to hear this: Christ did not just casually wish you well.He has locked down a supernatural military camp around your life. The enemy may march up to your gates, but because of the serious, eternal plea of Jesus Christ, he cannot breach the fort!II. THE UNVEILED SANCTUARY: THE COURTROOM SEATING ORDER (Hebrews 9:24 & 2 Timothy 4:16–18)Hebrews 9:24 (NIV)Hebrews 9:24 NIV 24 For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence. The Grand Sanctuary Redirection:In the Old Testament economy, the high-priestly action on Yom Kippur was defined by absolute physical separation. The high priest disappeared entirely behind a heavy, woven veil into the physical chamber of stone and gold—the Naos—to sprinkle blood on the Mercy Seat of the Ark.Yet this grand earthly tabernacle, built in the desert sands, was merely a temporal model of the authentic heavenly throne room.Hebrews 9:24 shatters this copy. Christ does not enter a man-made temple. He bypasses the copy shadow— He not walking into a church— asking that God be there. He not walking into a closetHe not kneeling by a bed with hands foldedHe not closing the door to a Pastor officeHe not sitting with others a lifting his head to heavenHe enters directly into the genuine heavenly courtroom—the ultimate court of the universe—to appear now in the presence of God on our behalf! Why is He there — FOR US!!!!And He is there NOW!!!!The word NOW indicates a present, unceasing, and permanent representation. He does not visit the chamber; He occupies it continuously, meaning our files are never left sitting on the desk without our Advocate standing right over them. His court has more power than our courts2 Timothy 4:16–18 NIV 16 At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them. 17 But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.NeroThe Great Fire of Rome (July AD 64): Nero deflected public outrage away from himself by targeting the Christian community, initiating the first state-sponsored imperial persecution. — 6 DAYS!!! while he was away at his villaRumors began circulating that Nero had intentionally ordered the fire started so he could clear out land to build his massive new palace complex, Golden House . The famous Roman historian Tacitus noted that "nobody dared to fight the fire" because groups of men were openly blocking efforts and claiming they acted under orders.Deflecting Public Outrage: Facing a major political insurrection, Nero desperately needed a scapegoat to shift the blame away from himself. He targeted a relatively new, distinct religious group that was already viewed with suspicion by the Roman publicNero ordered mass arrests of Christians, not formally for arson, but under the broad charge of "hatred of the human race" due to their refusal to worship gods or participate in pagan civic festivals.Apostle Peter and the Apostle Paul were swept up in the wave of anti-Christian hostilitiesPaul writes 2 Timothy from a cold, subterranean cell in Rome during the terrifying period of Emperor Nero's targeted persecutions. The "first defense" Paul recounts was a formal capital trial within Rome located in the public Forum. The presiding Roman magistrate sat high up on a stone platform.Under strict Roman judicial guidelines, a defendant of status relied heavily on their patrons and advocates to stand physically alongside them at the defense table to display political, social, and economic backing.Paul scans the courtroom and finds his defense table completely barren: "No one came to my support, but everyone deserted me."This is Paul — All these people he helped, churches he built, letters he wrote, people he inspired and who he supported.Under Nero's reign of terror, appearing in public as a legal advocate or character witness for a notorious leader of the unlawful religion was essentially a death sentence. In this moment of legal bankruptcy, verse 17 shifts the universe: "But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength."Lions Mouth: Amphitheater had lions, Daniel and Lions Den, Nero’s reign is that of a beast!!!!Nero sat high on his stone imperial throne, believing he held the power of life and death in his hands. But Nero’s court did not have the final say!The ultimate Advocate stepped out of the heavenly bench, walked down into the Roman courtroom, and occupied the empty seat right next to Paul! When the world abandons you, when your resources dry up, and when you find yourself standing before a tribunal of sickness, loss, or fear, your defense table is never empty.Christ is standing right beside you, putting supernatural strength into your spine! He is the Infinite Co-Signer.Imagine standing in a courtroom, buried under a debt so massive that ten lifetimes of manual labor couldn't pay off a fraction of a single percent. You are shaking, knowing you are utterly bankrupt. But during the trial, a brilliant, wealthy Counselor steps forward. He doesn't argue your innocence; He simply opens His own limitless treasury and pays the debt in full.He co-signs your life with His own blood. The Father no longer audits your past mistakes; He looks at the unbending assets of His Son. Therefore, we can declare withRomans 8:33 NIV 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies.III. THE PARTICIPATION AGREEMENT: ENGAGING THE COUNSELORThe Law Firm of Grace:The Legal Malpractice of Silence:If Christ has secured this high-stakes, unshakeable advocacy for us, what is our role in this process? How does our relationship with Him matter? In the legal world, a defense attorney cannot effectively try a case, secure a plea, or win a breakthrough if the client refuses to speak to him.If the client hides key files, lies to the counsel, or ignores every phone call from the firm, they sabotage their own defense.Even worse, what if the client leaves the attorney’s office and immediately begins taking legal advice from back-alley scammers on the street corner?Yet, that is exactly how many of us treat our relationship with Jesus Christ!Active Cooperation Over Passive Waiting:Taking Comfort: We take comfort because the legal outcome of our eternity is entirely secured by His blood.Taking Care: But because we have an active Advocate, we must stay in active communication. We take our folders to His desk daily, aligning our choices with His counsel. We don't live a disjointed life where we only talk to our Attorney on Sunday morning;we engage Him in the mundane, boring moments so that when a crisis hits on a Tuesday, the loop is already wide open. The Legally Binding Eviction Notice:Sermon Illustration: When a property owner seeks to remove an illegal, hostile squatter from a building, they do not show up with bats and start screaming arbitrary warnings. They present a legally executed eviction document signed and sealed by the highest judge in the district. The squatter does not vacate because they fear the landlord's personal stature; they flee because they recognize the supreme sovereign power behind that landlord. They may fight the landlord but they not willing to fight the courts who favor the landlord. When anxiety, depression, or condemnation tries to illegally SQUAT in your mind, do not scream in panic; present the eviction document signed and sealed in the blood of your Advocate. The case is dismissed! The Infinite Co-Signer:Sermon Illustration: Imagine a client who has run up a debt so vast that ten lifetimes of manual labor could not pay a fraction of a percent. They stand trembling in court, utterly bankrupt. During the recess, a brilliant Counselor steps forward and completely pays the debt in full using his own limitless treasury. The client is declared legally free.Application: Yet, if that client leaves the court and immediately begins taking financial advice from back-alley scammers, they will walk right back into self-imposed bondage. Our status is legally paid, but we must stop listening to the street scams of the enemy and walk according to the Counselor's terms.Acts 12:16–19 NIV 16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. 17 Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,” he said, and then he left for another place. 18 In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. 19 After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there. It Will Not Find You:You think that depression won’t come looking for you.Doubt is looking for you.BUT IT WILL NOT FIND YOU!!!!!CONCLUSION: STEPPING OUT OF THE HOTHOUSEThe Challenge: The next time a brother or sister looks you in the eye and shares their insurmountable task, don't give them a casual checklist response. Don't let your prayer have a hollow ring. Stop looking in the mirror of self-interest and look through the window of community crisis. The Activation: Take their dungeon experience into your own hands. Stretch yourself this week. Dedicate intentional, sacrificial time to carry their chains to the throne of grace, and stand watch at the gate—because the King's answer is already on the way.You can pray for others because someone is praying for you!! And guess what He praying for them to. So if no one ever prays for you or supports you2 Timothy 4:16–18 NIV 16 At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. Amen.
