Introduction: The Blinking Light on the Machine

Every single one of us knows how to manage a look. We know how to get up on Sunday morning, put together the right ensemble, walk into the foyer with a bright smile, and greet everybody with all the correct Christian vocabulary.
We can carry ourselves in such a way that everyone around us says, "Now look at them. They really have it all together.
    Look how faithful they are.
    Look how blessed they look."
We have mastered the art of managing outward perception.
We know how to manage how our neighbors see us, how our coworkers see us, and how our church community sees us.

    Part 1 - Trauma

Last week, we opened this series by looking at what happens in a medical emergency.

When a patient collapses and is rushed through the double doors into trauma triage, the doctors don’t pause to admire the brand of their shoes, their résumé, their social standing, or their bank balance.
They take trauma shears and cut the clothes right off their body—destroying fabric that cost money, longing, and effort to purchase—because when life is on the line, outward cosmetics are treated as completely worthless.
The doctors don’t hate the clothes. But its not about the the clothes it’s about the person in the clothes
The rescue crew saws right through the crushed metal of an expensive car to get to the person inside. Why? Because the shell is worthless when the life within is in jeopardy.
Yet so many of us walk around trying to fashion this outward look while our internal vitals are in complete disarray.
You sit down at a blood pressure monitor, slip that cuff over your arm, and press the button. The machine inflates, takes its reading, and numbers appear on the screen. But occasionally, right beside those numbers, an icon begins to flash on the digital display: Arrhythmia / Irregular Heartbeat Detected.
When that warning light flashes, it doesn't mean you have dropped dead on the floor.
It doesn't mean your heart has stopped beating altogether.
It means your heart is beating completely out of rhythm.
    NO NEED TO PANIC
The primary organ engineered by God to pump life-giving blood, oxygen, and nutrients to every extremity, organ, and cell in your body is misfiring.
And spiritually, that is the exact condition of countless believers sitting in churches today.
We are walking around trying to fashion an outward posture of "I'm good, God is good," while internally our spiritual rhythm is misfiring and throwing our entire life into survival mode.

    The Exhaustion of Spiritual Hypoxia

Think about what happens physically when you live with an irregular heartbeat.
In medical conditions like atrial fibrillation, electrical impulses in the heart misfire.
Instead of a strong, rhythmic squeeze, the heart flutters erratically.
Your cardiac output drops by twenty to thirty percent.
Your brain and your muscles are suddenly deprived of the full supply of fresh oxygen they require to thrive.
You don’t collapse on day one.
You keep getting up, going to work, running errands, and attending church.
But how do you feel? You are dragging. You are battling constant, unexplained fatigue.
You are fighting through persistent brain fog where your mind just isn't sharp. You find yourself irritable, snappy, and short-tempered with the people you love most.
Why? Because your body is getting whatever scrap of oxygen it can just to survive.
Spiritually, so many of us are living in that exact same state!
We are spiritually tired, constantly frustrated, easily irritated, and sluggish in our faith.
We are dragging ourselves through daily life, running on pure survival mode.
    And we wonder:
    Why am I so exhausted?
Why can't I focus when I read Scripture?
Why do I feel like I'm just barely keeping my head above water?
It’s not because your schedule is too full; it’s because your internal spiritual heartbeat is completely out of rhythm!
Your soul is suffocating on low oxygen because you are disconnected from the steady, rhythmic cadence of the Father's love. You are trying to live a life fashioned by God while the central operating tool that supplies your spiritual life is misfiring.
    Well I can manage.
    I can keep going
    Proverbs 4:23 NIV
23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

The Sagging Floorboard: The Cost of Compensation

What happens when you know something is broken in your life, but you refuse to address it?
Think about your own home. Most of us have had something in the house that's broken.
You know it’s broken, but you just deal with it until you feel like fixing it, or until you get the time and the funds.
But you know that if you don't fix it, it’s going to get worse.
I’ve gone to people’s houses where the living room floor is literally sagging and falling in. You step into the room and they say, "Hey, be careful right there—just walk around that spot."
You look at them and think, How on earth did it get this bad?
Well, it didn't start like that! It started with one weak board, or one leaky pipe underneath that softened a single section of wood.
But instead of tearing it up and repairing the subfloor, they just walked around it. They tried to compensate. And while they were walking around that sore spot, the surrounding floorboards and supporting joists were forced to carry a load they were never engineered to bear! The rest of the floor tried to compensate for the weak spot until the joists warped, the rot spread, and the whole foundation began falling apart.
And the house isn’t happy, Wife mad, kids upset probably because the house is not comfortable
That is what happens with an untreated arrhythmia! In the physical body, if you ignore an irregular heartbeat, you don't just stay sluggish.
Over time, that turbulence in the blood flow forms clots that lead to devastating strokes, heart failure, and systemic collapse.
And in your spiritual life, it starts small.
    An unresolved offense.
    A pocket of unchecked anxiety.
    A quiet root of bitterness.
You know it’s broken, but you don't bring it to the altar.
You just learn to "walk around it."
You try to compensate with more activity, more church attendance, more smiling, and more religious performance.
But while you are compensating, other areas of your life begin to buckle under the strain! Your marriage begins to sag.
    Your temper snaps.
    Your joy rots away.
When you ignore an irregular spiritual rhythm, the foundation of your spiritual life will eventually collapse under the weight.

You Are Not Your Own Cardiologist

This brings us face to face with the great cultural excuse of modern Christianity. When confronted with our brokenness, our snappy temper, or our lack of fruit, what do we say?
We look up and casually say: "Well, God knows my heart."
    That is a true statement.
    God does know your heart.
But we use that phrase as an excuse to stay broken! We use it as a protective shield to keep God away from our unaddressed habits. We think that saying what God knows about us is enough.
Let's look at how foolish that sounds in the natural world.
If you go to a cardiologist, and he listens to your chest, hooks up the leads, runs an angiogram, and says:
"Your test results are terrible. Your rhythm is erratic, you have an arrhythmia, and if you don't submit to treatment and make serious lifestyle changes, you are headed for disaster."
Imagine looking that cardiologist in the eye, smiling defensively, and saying, "Well, doc, at least you know my heart! You know what I'm dealing with, and you accept me for who I am!"
Does that doctor's knowledge save your life?
Not for a single second! He knows your heart, but that doesn't help you if you walk out of his office and do nothing with the knowledge he provided!
He knows the outcome if you refuse to change, and he knows exactly what it takes to make you well. It is not about what the physician knows; it is all about what you are willing to do with the truth he reveals.
Furthermore, you can place your hand over your own chest and listen to your pulse, but you are not a heart doctor! You do not possess the wisdom, the training, or the diagnostic authority to declare yourself healthy. We cannot heal ourselves with our own intuition.
    Ancient Heart
In the ancient biblical world, the heart (was never understood as merely a fleeting emotion, a romantic mood, or an emotional reflex.
In ancient Roman thought, the heart was recognized as the inner command center—the seat of the intellect, understanding, conscience, will, and the decisive moral steering wheel of the entire human person.
When God looks at your heart, He is inspecting the steering wheel of your life.
And look at what Scripture says about our ability to diagnose our own steering wheel:
    Jeremiah 17:9–10 NIV
9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 10 “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”
The prophet Jeremiah blows our self-diagnosis out of the water! He declares that the natural human heart is deceitful above all things—it is fraudulent, treacherous, and desperately sick. Who can understand it? Who can diagnose it?
Then Yahweh answers: "I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind..."
God steps in to do what no human being can do for themselves.
He uses forensic precision: He bores down into the deepest, uncurated recesses of who you are, and He assays your inner motives like precious metal in a smelting furnace to burn away the dross.
So when you say, "God knows my heart," understand that God responds: "Yes, I know your heart. I know the arrhythmia. I know the hidden issues. I know the fear, the anger, the pride, and the broken rhythms inside it."
And the Great Physician leans down and asks you a piercing question: "Do you just want Me to know your heart, or do you want Me to FIX your heart?"
Too many of us say, "Ehhh, I'm good," and we walk away, expecting God's power and blessings while refusing to submit to the divine repair our vitals desperately need.

What Throws the Rhythm Off: Fear, Anxiety, and Ambient Dread

What is it that actually causes our heartbeat to misfire?
In our physical bodies, what spikes our blood pressure? What triggers heart palpitations? What causes our cardiovascular system to race and stumble?
It is stress, tension, and unmanaged panic. When you are in an intensely tense situation, you know exactly how it feels—your chest tightens, your breathing turns shallow, and your pulse races.
If anxiety and panic do that to your physical body, what do you think chronic fear and anxiety are doing to your spiritual vitals?
Look at what the people in the 1st-century Mediterranean world were facing when the New Testament was written.
They lived under an baseline of cultural dread. They believed in erratic, temperamental pagan gods who had to be constantly appeased with sacrifices so they wouldn't strike their crops or their families. They lived under brutal Roman magistrates where you could be dragged into a tribunal and executed without appeal.
And look at what Jesus told them in the Gospels. In Matthew chapter 6, Jesus looked at His disciples and commanded them: Do not worry about what you will eat, or what you will drink, or what you will wear.
Think about that! Those were not trivial concerns; those were absolute life-and-death necessities! They were living hand-to-mouth.
When was the last time you woke up in the morning genuinely terrified that you wouldn't have a single crumb of bread to eat?
When was the last time you panicked because you literally had no clothing to cover your back?
Those people were facing genuine survival crises, yet Jesus looked at them and said: Look at the birds of the air; look at the lilies of the field. Your heavenly Father knows you need them. Do not be anxious.
When the last time you looked at a Bird and thought man he look hungry!!!!
And now look at us today!
We have full refrigerators and closets packed with clothes, yet our spiritual heartbeat is racing out of control!
We are throwing our entire spiritual cadence into an arrhythmia worrying about whether somebody likes us or not!
We are losing sleep over whether a coworker approved of our comment, whether someone texted us back, or whether our peers validate our status.
Think about the absurdity of our spiritual condition:
God told people facing genuine starvation and nakedness that He could take care of them, and we act like He can’t handle our social media feed, our workplace politics, or our temporary social standing!
We get consumed with petty anxieties, and we don't think God is big enough to handle them. So our blood pressure spikes, our fears take over, and our spiritual rhythm stumbles into chaos.
Scripture gives us a direct medical diagnostic on fear:
    2 Timothy 1:7 NIV
7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and of a sound mind.
Fear and anxiety are foreign intruders!
They do not belong in the chest of a believer. Whenever you allow panic and fear to dominate your thoughts, you are allowing an unauthorized intruder to disrupt the steady electrical cadence of your soul.
And look at Paul’s clinical prescription in Philippians:
    Philippians 4:6–7 NIV
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
    PHONE DRAIN!!!!!
    Battery Charged to 100%
    Phone with a running app!
Paul doesn't say "do not be anxious" to heap guilt upon you; he gives it as a vital health protocol! When you stop trying to carry the load in your own finite strength, and instead hand your requests to the Father through prayer with thanksgiving, the peace of God acts like an armed cardiac monitor, guarding your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus.
When we let fear run unchecked, we fall into covenant amnesia.
On Sunday morning, while we are singing, our heart feels steady.
But let one unexpected bill show up in the mailbox on Tuesday, let one difficult email land on your desk on Wednesday, and spiritual amnesia sets in!
We panic over today's problem as if God had never carried us through a single trial in our past. We revert to the dread of a criminal waiting for the hammer of judgment to fall, terrified that God is out to punish us.
    1 John 4:18 NIV
18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
John tells us that fear has to do with punishment (kolasis)—penal dread and torment.
But perfect, mature love casts out that fear! God is not an imperial tyrant waiting to strike you down; He is a loving Father who has already secured your peace through the cross.

Love as the Central Pumping Engine & The Outward Echo

How do we get our spiritual heartbeat back on rhythm?
You cannot fix an electrical misfire in your chest by positive thinking, and you cannot fix a broken spiritual rhythm by religious striving.
You must submit to the Divine Pacemaker:
    1 John 4:16 NIV
16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
John tells us that whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
The Greek verb to abide, to dwell, to take up permanent residence. Spiritual vitality is not found in an occasional emotional visit to church on Sunday; it is found in continuous, settled residence inside the Father's love.
When you abide in His love, the panic begins to subside. The racing pulse calms down. Your heart locks back into the unhurried, steady cadence of heaven.
Love is not an optional emotional accessory in the Christian life.
Love is your central pumping engine! It is the vital organ that pumps life-giving grace through every single dimension of who you are.
When love is pumping properly, it touches every relationship, every workplace conversation, every domestic responsibility, and every trial. It keeps you calm when the world around you is in total chaos.
And think about what healthy blood flow does: it carries nutrients in, and it carries waste out.
That is what divine love does to your soul!
You see so much hurt that people carry around—old grudges, bitter memories, toxic offenses that act like calcified plaque in their spiritual vessels. But when you allow God’s love to pump freely through your heart, love carries that hurt away! It flushes the toxic residue out of your spirit and restores flexible, unhindered life to your soul.
And here is the undeniable diagnostic truth: when your heartbeat is off, people feel it.
When your spiritual heartbeat is erratic and you are running on low-oxygen survival mode—exhausted, anxious, defensive, and depleted—you lack the margin to extend grace.
You view your spouse, your children, and your coworkers not as image-bearers to love, but as obstacles and competitors draining what little energy you have left. They feel your tension. They hear the sharp edge in your voice. They see the frantic pace of your life.
And you also feel other people's rhythm!
You know the genuine nature of people, don't you? It comes straight from the heart. You cannot fake a steady heart.
You can spot someone who is merely performing a religious routine from a mile away, and you can instantly recognize someone whose heart is genuinely at rest.
When your heart pumps on rhythm with the Prince of Peace, people notice the calm.
Your home feels the peace. Your workplace feels the stability. People who walk with genuine joy and steady happiness do not live problem-free lives. Their bills still come due, their bodies still face aches, and their circumstances can be just as turbulent as yours. The difference isn't the storm outside—the difference is that their heartbeat is on rhythm on the inside! The lens they use to view life has been calibrated by the love of God.
And where does that rhythm come from?
    1 John 4:19 NIV
19 We love because he first loved us.
"We love because He first loved us." We do not manufacture this heartbeat out of our own human dirt. We are simply reflecting the initiating, overwhelming, steady love of the Father.
    Proverbs 4:23 NIV
23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Stop letting the panic, the noise, and the petty opinions of this world set your rhythm!
Climb up on the examination table of the Holy Spirit today. Stop saying "Ehhh, I'm good," and stop hiding behind "God knows my heart." Confess the sluggishness, surrender the anxiety, and allow the Great Physician to repair your broken cadence. Let His perfect, initiating love set the steady heartbeat of your life today.

Closing Call to Action & Prayer

Every head bowed, every eye closed across this sanctuary.
    Healthy LIVING
    Stretching
    Walk
Activity you love that you enjoy that you dedicate to God....are you cherishing it; Are you taking care of it.
Church family, where are you today? Have you been walking around with a flashing light on your spiritual monitor, feeling that irregular rhythm, but ignoring it? Have you been dragging through your weeks—sluggish, irritable, anxious, and trapped in low-oxygen survival mode—while still trying to fashion a look of "I'm good" for the people around you?
Have you been walking around a sagging floorboard in your life, compensating in your marriage, compensating in your temper, compensating in your peace, hoping that somehow it will fix itself?
The Great Physician is in this room right now. He knows your heart. He knows the blockages. He knows the arrhythmia. He knows the anxiety you’ve been carrying over things He never asked you to bear. And He is looking directly at you, asking: "Do you just want Me to know it, or will you let Me fix it?"
If you are ready to stop compensating, if you are ready to let His love reset your rhythm, I want you to open your hands right where you are as a sign of total surrender.
