Welcome everyone, and Merry Christmas! We are glad that you chose to join us this evening for our Candle light service as we join together to celebrate the Love of God, through the Birth of The Son of God, Jesus Christ.
I shared with our church on Sunday, that the whole idea of gift giving began with our Father in Heaven, because He loves us. You guys know the verse, even if you’ve never been to church in your life, you probably have heard,
    John 3:16 LSB
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
He gave His only begotten Son, because He loved the whole world. He did it because He loves.
Because of who He is, He knows how to love. See love is more than just an attribute of God, it is God, and The Bible says that He is Love.
In fact it tells us that the only way we can know love, real love, is through Him. So if you don’t know God, you don’t know love, the closest thing you’ll ever find is a counterfeit.
Let me read that to you.
    1 John 4:7–8 LSB
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
The emphasis on the slide there is mine, the proof of it through Jesus is all His! This passage continues...
    1 John 4:9–10 LSB
9 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
    Or the perfect substitutionary payment...
    1 John 4:11–12 LSB
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has beheld God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us.
    1 John 4:13–14 LSB
13 By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. 14 We have beheld and bear witness that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.
The title of our opening slide this evening asked a question...

    Christmas Eve 2025

    What Child is This?
That question is answered in that last verse...
    1 John 4:14 LSB
14 We have beheld and bear witness that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.
I’m going to read a portion of the traditional Christmas story directly out of the Gospel of Luke, but understand when I am reading about the Baby Born in Bethlehem, it is speaking of this Son, His Son, that the Father sent to be the Savior of the world.
    Luke 2:1–4 LSB
1 Now it happened that in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus for a census to be taken of all the inhabited earth. 2 This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And everyone was going to be registered for the census, each to his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,
    Luke 2:5–8 LSB
5 in order to register along with Mary, who was betrothed to him, and was with child. 6 Now it happened that while they were there, the days were fulfilled for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the guest room. 8 In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night.
    Luke 2:9–11 LSB
9 And an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people. 11 For today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
This is what we celebrate as Christians on Christmas Day, literally translated from the Old English as Christ’s Mass. We celebrate this birth, for it is through this birth, through Jesus, that Salvation is made possible to us.
Nicole read a passage earlier where the Apostle John described Jesus as being The Light. What’s interesting is that Jesus said the same thing about Himself, it’s the reason we use candles as part of our celebration this evening.
In John chapter 8 verse 12, Jesus says...
    John 8:12 LSB
12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
We don’t have to be in darkness in this world that is falling apart. We don’t have to believe lies because it is politically correct, or seek salvation in sinking ships because its not offensive, or more inclusive.
The Bible warns against that kind of thinking in these days we are living in.
    2 Timothy 4:3 LSB
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires,
People will no longer seek truth, and will embrace fantasy over facts.
The world that you and I live in has begun to buy into the lie that there is such a thing as your truth, and my truth. Think about that for just a second and Even the dumbest amongst us knows within themselves that is simply not possible. There is truth and there is not truth.
Jesus came to this earth, born as a baby, grew to be a man without sin, and as we have read together this evening, to offer Himself as the perfect sacrifice for our sin.
I know we are here this evening to celebrate the birth, but that is only part of the story. He was born that He might die, so that through Him, we could live. He was born, and lived a sinless life, so that He could pay the price for those who had not done that, those that chose sin.
That’s you and I, and everyone you know.
But then, after 3 days He rose from the grave and defeated death, so that we could live. Not just live, but be with Him for all of eternity.
The Bible tells us if we believe in Him, if we confess our sins, we will be saved. You’ve heard me say it, but I want you to see the promise written in His Word.
    1 John 1:5–8 LSB
5 And this is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not do the truth; 7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
    1 John 1:9–10 LSB
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.
So again, this is not an issue of your truth, or my truth, we’ve already established the dumbness of that. Or for the educated, that very statement presents a logical fallacy. There is no truth in it. This one who is the Light of the World said this in John 18, and it is in a conversation that is record at least in portion in all four of the Gospel accounts, between Jesus and Pilot, during one of His trials before going to the cross.
    John 18:36–38 LSB
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be delivered over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not from here.” 37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You yourself said I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” 38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?”...
See that is the question that we must all answer. If not today, then it will be on the day that we meet Him face to face...because He loves you, He has given us the answer. Just as the Father is Love, Jesus the Son is truth, not just truthful, but truth itself...He says...
    John 14:6 LSB
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through Me.
What Child is this? Jesus the way, the truth, and the life.
    Luke 2:10–11 LSB
10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people. 11 For today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
    Let’s continue to celebrate!
