- The Discipline of the Lord – Trained by GraceMessage 6Hebrews 12:4-6Lest We ForgetLest we ForgetSeptember 11, 2001Most of us can remember what we were doing that day.But we now have a whole generation that wasn’t born.On 9-11 this year Tina and I are on way to the pastor’s conference.People were standing on the overpassMy first thought was they are running radar. They were reminding people of the events of that day.We have these markers in our lives remind us of the past events. (Holidays)We need a reminder “lest we forget”.We can forgetWhen talking about the Jewish Christians of Hebrews.“Their problem wasn’t that they had never heard the truth—they had lost sight of it in the struggle.”Hardship can cause us to forget what we know about God.When life hurts, our circumstances can become louder than God’s Word. And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? Hebrews 12:5, NIV
Hebrews 12:5 NIV And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son?Stop take moment – Remember what God has said.An Encouraging Word Part 1When life is unfair and hard.God will stir within us the courage and desire to stand fast.“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8, NLT1 Peter 5:8 NLT Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.“Stand firm against him and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.” 1 Peter 5:9, NLT1 Peter 5:9 NLT Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.“The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little while.” 1 Peter 5:10, CSB1 Peter 5:10 NLT In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.Have you forgotten? An Encouraging Word Part 2Consequence of Sin“That addresses you as a father addresses his son?”“When we fail and cave in to the trial and sin, God lets us reap what we have sown.”But even during sin and failure, God loves us.He loves us and works with us, convicting us by His Spirit to repent.“Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and make your hearts pure, you double-minded.” James 4:8, NETJames 4:8 NET Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and make your hearts pure, you double-minded.He then uses the suffering of the sin to stir us to think of Him and our failure.God takes the sufferings that are caused by trials and sins and uses them to correct and discipline us.Dealing with bad and evilGod does not cause them.We cause them. This corrupt world causes them. The arch-enemy Satan causes them.God loves us and has nothing in mind for us except love and the very best of everything.Trained by GraceGod takes all the bad and evil. All the suffering of bad and evil.He uses it all to make us think about Him and our failure. He uses the suffering caused by sin and trials to correct and discipline us.To stir our hearts to draw near Him.To trust Him, depend on Him, to love Him, (Peter, do you love me?) and to live as we should.Don’t make light of the Lord’s disciplineMost of allDon’t lose heart.Lest We ForgetWhat must we not forget? When you are struggling — don’t forget what God has said. When you have failed — don’t forget whose child you are. When God is correcting you — don’t forget what he is doing in you.God isn’t finished with you.He is training you by grace.Lest we forget: our Father loves us too much to leave us where he found us.
