  • The Discipline of the Lord – Trained by Grace
    Message 7
    Hebrews 12:4-6

Two Wrongs Don’t Make a Right

    When You Overcorrect
    Stay on the road.
You are driving down the road.
You become distracted and begin to drift off the road.
Our first instinctive is to jerk the steering wheel and get back on the road.
But there is DANGER in doing that.
    The danger is to

    Overcorrect

There is a spiritual overcorrection we can do.
Our text today mentions two of them.
“My son, do not make lightof the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,” Hebrews 12:5, NIV
    Hebrews 12:5 NIV
“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
One is running off the road and into a ditch.
The other is overcorrecting and ending in an accident.
We will examine both of these and see what we can do to avoid them.

    “My Son”

    Our First Step
    Understand who is addressing us.
This passage is a quote from Proverbs.
“My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD Or loathe His reproof,” Proverbs 3:11, NASB95
    Proverbs 3:11 NASB95
My son, do not reject the discipline of the Lord Or loathe His reproof,
“For the LORD corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.” Proverbs 3:12, NLT (See Hebrews 12:6)
    Proverbs 3:12 NLT
For the Lord corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.
The Lord is addressing us as sons and daughters.
Our first step is to understand who is addressing us.
    Discipline begins with relationship
Before God speaks about discipline, he speaks about sonship.
“My son” is the language of relationship, not rejection.
God’s correction is not evidence that he has abandoned us.
It is evidence that he is dealing with us as his children.
Discipline must be understood through grace
The hand that corrects us is the same hand that holds us.
The hand that corrects is the same hand that heals, guides, protect and provides.
Never interpret God’s discipline apart from God’s love.

The First Wrong Response — “Do Not Make Light”

    We can dismiss God’s discipline
“Make light” carries the idea of treating something as insignificant.
Do you know the squeaking sound your brakes can make?
Ignore that long enough and you will have problems.
    We treat God like that.
He brings conviction to our hearts.
You know you should forgive, give, stop, delete, or go.
Instead, we ignore it, explain it away, or blame someone else.
    We can become spiritually insensitive
Powerful Principle: God speaks through his Word, the Holy Spirit, consequences, circumstances, and sometimes other believers.
The question isn't simply, “How do I get out of this?”
The better question is, “Lord, what are you teaching me through this?”
Discipline is meant to produce change.
We are being Trained by Grace

The Second Wrong Response — “Do Not Lose Heart”

We can go to the opposite extreme
    This is the “overcorrection”.
    Some people shrug off correction.
    Others are crushed by it.
Lose heart’ carries the idea of ‘giving out,’ ‘becoming weary,’ becoming discouraged, or giving up.
A staggering 42% of pastors seriously considered leaving the ministry during the pandemic.
It wasn’t the hardest for me. But it was a tough season.
    Wrong thinking
“God must be finished with me.”
    “I’ll never get this right.”
    “I’ll never be good enough.”
    “I’m a failure.”
    “There’s no use trying anymore.”
Failure does not mean God is finished
“And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.” Galatians 6:9, LSB
    Galatians 6:9 LSB
And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.
    Don’t give up poster
God’s rebuke is not the end of the relationship.
Discipline is part of our growth within the relationship.

Stay on the Road of Grace

    Keeping it between the ditches.
On one side: “It doesn’t matter.”
On the other: “There’s no hope for me.”
    Grace says neither one.

    Take God Seriously

If God points something out, listen.

    But never surrender to despair

    Come clean, turn from it.
    Keep running the race.
    Fix your eyes on Jesus.

    How Will You Respond?

    Ignore it?
    Crushed by it?
    Or trained by it?
