  • The Discipline of the Lord – Trained by Grace
    Message 8

This Is Gonna Hurt Me More Than You!

    Hebrews 12:6 ESV
For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”

This Is Gonna Hurt Me More Than You!

I don’t ever remember being told that.
    But it makes us laugh.
There has been an interesting shift in parenting over the years.
When I was growing up, spanking was a common form of discipline.
Most of us didn't have to wonder what would happen if we disobeyed our parents!
“Over the years, our culture has changed. Today, there's a parenting philosophy called gentle parenting. The emphasis is on understanding a child's feelings, communicating expectations, and correcting behavior without physical punishment.”
I'm not here to settle the debate over which parenting method is best.
But I do want you to understand something.
Whether discipline is gentle or firm, if it doesn't correct anything, it isn't accomplishing its purpose.
And if discipline is motivated by anger rather than love, something is wrong there too.
    Our Heavenly Father
God doesn't discipline us because he's angry and needs to take it out on somebody.
And he doesn't ignore our disobedience just because he loves us.
We believe in second chances and fresh starts.
God loves us too much to leave us the way we are.
His discipline isn't intended to destroy us.
    It's intended to train us.
    To disciple us.
No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:11, NIV
    Hebrews 12:11 NIV
No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

God’s Discipline is Motivated by Love

    A reminder about verse 5
Verse 6 uses the conjunction “for”
    Two exhortations
Don’t take discipline lightly and don’t lose heart.
    Here’s why
    Because of

    “agapa” love

Agapa love = “to have a great affection or care for or loyalty towards.”
    God’s discipline is not impulsive.
It has a purpose and meaning.
“For the LORD disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.” Hebrews 12:6, NLT
    Hebrews 12:6 ESV
For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”
    Love doesn't always mean comfort.
We often associate God's love with blessings, protection, and answered prayers.
But sometimes His love comes through correction.
For the LORD corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights. Proverbs 3:12, NLT
    Proverbs 3:12 NLT
For the Lord corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.
I correct and discipline those whom I love. So be earnest and change your hearts and lives. Revelation 3:19, CEB
    Revelation 3:19 CEB
I correct and discipline those whom I love. So be earnest and change your hearts and lives.
God loves us too much to leave us unchanged.

    God’s Discipline is Personal

    “Those He loves”
    The universe is big.
8.3 billion people in the world
Yet God’s attention is focused on you.
Like Oprah And You And You And You
He knows your name. He knows what you're going through. He knows what keeps you awake at night.
    You have His undivided attention.
God doesn't have to put somebody else on hold to listen to you.
Psalm 139 Tells he knows our very thoughts.
Want to what else He knows?
Your rebellion, your selfish acts, your disobedience
    He sees the temptations
But still calls us his children
God's discipline is not a sign of His rejection but an expression of His relationship with us.
    See Hebrews 12:7-11

    God’s Discipline can be painful.

    Discipline
The Greek word here includes disciplining, educating, training, correcting, too enforce obedience.
“God’s discipline is meant to produce holiness, righteousness, and spiritual maturity; it is painful in the present but fruitful afterward.”
    Disciplines answer the question…
What is God doing through their hardship?
Answer: He is training and forming his children.
    Chastises
This going to hurt me more than you.
The second verb is mastigoō,literally associated with flogging or scourging.
This is what they did to Jesus before they hung him on the cross.
Here it is being used as a striking image for severe correction or painful discipline.
Not all hardship is because of sin.
Listen to this truth. When you sin and rebel, God is not seeking His pound of flesh.
But God’s “character building” can involve real hardship. Real suffering.
“Discipline” gives the purpose; “chastises” conveys the pain.
God’s action is “purposeful training” – but it can feel severe.
Discipline tells us we are being trained.
Chastise (flogging) intensifies the seriousness of it.
Godly discipline is intended to produce change.
We've all heard that old expression, "This is gonna hurt me more than it hurts you!"
I don't know whether that was always true when our parents said it.
But here's what I do know about our Heavenly Father.
He doesn't take pleasure in our pain.
He doesn't discipline us because he's stopped loving us.
He disciplines us precisely because he loves us.
And although the discipline may be painful, his purpose is always good.
God is more interested in our holiness than our temporary comfort.
