ILLUSTRATION: My senior year in high school I needed one more science credit to be able to graduate.
There were various classes I could have taken: Advanced Chemistry, Advanced Biology, even Advanced Physics.
But there was another class that caught my eye… Forensic Science
The whole class was about how to solve crimes
We learned about dusting for fingerprints, looking for things that were out of place, diving into the persons backstory.
For the final exam, they turned one of the teachers lounges into a crime scene, and we had to solve the crime to figure out what happened.
I remember dusting door knobs looking for finger prints.
Logging evidence in evidence bags and keeping an evidence trail so we could solve the crime.
Through the whole thing we were looking for evidence that we could use that proved who ultimately committed the crime.
EXPLANATION: Jesus has been confronted by the religious Jews.
They were angry that Jesus would heal a lame man and tell him to carry his bed… on the Sabbath day!
Jesus had broken their personal convictions and they were irate about it.
So angered were they, that they wanted to kill Jesus.
    John 5:18 KJV 1900
Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
The thing that pushed them over the edge?
Jesus told them that He was doing the same work of God with the same power as God.
    John 5:17 KJV 1900
But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
For any man to claim the power of God and equality with God would be blasphemy.
But Jesus wan’t just another Man.
    Jesus was God in flesh.
And now Jesus is being pressured by the religious crowd, but rather than cower away into a corner, He doubles down on his position.
    John 5:19 KJV 1900
Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
Once again, Jesus emphasizes that He only does what God would do…
Which makes since, because He was God!
There is likely no more confusing and contradicted, yet more important subject than that of the trinity.
While the word trinity doesn’t find it’s way into the pages of Scripture, the doctrine is clearly taught.
There are three distinct persons of the Godhead: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
And yet these three distinct persons are One according to God’s Word.
    1 John 5:7 KJV 1900
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
It’s just a few pages ahead from where we are now in John 10:30
    John 10:30 KJV 1900
I and my Father are one.
And while many false religions like Jehovah’s Witness teach that these passages are pointing to Jesus being “one in purpose” but not in equality, it only takes a continuation of reading to clarify just what Jesus was saying:
    John 10:31–33 KJV 1900
Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
Jesus Christ is truly coequal with God and the third part of the trinity Whom we will spend multiple chapters diving into, the Holy Spirit.
Each person of the trinity is of equal power and priority.
One is not over the other.
All human illustrations to try to demonstrate the trinity fall miserably short to try to describe this holy union!
But it isn’t our job to put God in a box so we can comprehend Him
    Isaiah 55:8–9 KJV 1900
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, Neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are my ways higher than your ways, And my thoughts than your thoughts.
    Hebrews 11:1 KJV 1900
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
    2 Corinthians 5:7 KJV 1900
(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
And now Jesus begins these next collection of verses by giving three evidences of His deity.
They are three fingerprints in an abundance of evidence that we can find as we search the scriptures
They are three proofs that He is God in flesh because He does what only God can do.
    APPLICATION: Today is Palm Sunday.
It is the day 2000 years ago that Jesus made His entry into Jerusalem.
It was a day in which His presence was met with singing and celebration.
But there was just one problem… the people believed Jesus had come as the conquering King who would overthrow the Roman government and set up an earthly kingdom.
They believed that Jesus was coming as the Lion of Judah!
They worshipped Jesus but they worshipped Him as an earthly king.
Just like the religious Jews that were standing before Jesus here in John 5, they missed that He was God in flesh!
And friend, maybe you are here today and you have seen Jesus as a good man who did good things.
Maybe you’d even be willing to swing a palm leaf in His presence.
But you have failed to recognize Jesus for Who He truly is… He is God!
And He proves it because He does the works that only God can do!
If you know Christ as Savior, today will you once again approach Him as the God He is.
Stand in awe of His power and of His works
Be humbled in the presence of His majesty.
And if you are here today and you’ve never trusted Christ as Savior, today I want to introduce you to my King!
I wan’t you to truly meet King Jesus.
Who is God who became flesh!
Let’s see Jesus who can do only what God can do!

V.20-21, JESUS’S ACTIONS SHOW HIS DEITY

    John 5:20–21 KJV 1900
For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
EXPLANATION: You can see Jesus addresses this religious crowd, and He tells them, “If you are riled up by this lame man walking, just wait until you see what I’m going to know soon!
There is no instance thus far in the word of God of Jesus raising anyone from the dead.
But what Jesus tells them is “hold on, because just as only God can raise someone from the grave, I have the power to raise people from the grave.”
Jesus would do this on multiple occasions, but there is likely no more familiar example of Him doing this, than when He raised His friend Lazarus.
After 4 days in the grave, Jesus stands outside of Lazarus’s tomb John 11:43
    John 11:43 KJV 1900
And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
With 3 words from His lips, earths undefeated champion, death, had been defeated.
Death could not contain what Jesus words spoke against.
It is a power only possible from the lips of God.
But this should come as no surprise, because it was the lips of God, the lips of Jesus that had the power to create the world.
    Genesis 1:1–3 KJV 1900
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
    Colossians 1:16 KJV 1900
For by him (JESUS) were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
    John 1:1–3 KJV 1900
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
It was from the lips of Jesus that everything was spoken into existence
It was the lips of Jesus that would give a blind man sight
It was the lips of Jesus that would cast a demon out of a man living in a graveyard
It was the lips of Jesus that caused a deaf man to hear
It was from the lips of Jesus that Lazarus was raised from the dead
And it was from the lips of Jesus that lame man was made to walk!
Because the Words of God are powerful
    And Jesus is God!
    His actions show His deity!
APPLICATION: And if you’ve known Him for any length of time, you know He’s still good, and He’s still powerful… and He’s still God!
I’ve seen people who were blinded by their sin, see the light of Jesus
I’ve seen people who were deaf to the truth, have their ears opened by the Word of God
I’ve seen people who were dead in their trespasses and sins, receive eternal life by putting their trust in Jesus.
On Friday night 25 people said they made a decision to trust in Jesus as their Savior.
Friend, God is still doing the greatest miracle today… He’s defeating death when people put their faith and trust in Christ alone!
The actions of Jesus show His deity!

V.22, JESUS’S JUDGMENT SHOWS HIS DEITY

    John 5:22 KJV 1900
For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
EXPLANATION: What Jesus is pointing to here is something the religious Jews didn’t get.
You see, at the end of His 3 1/2 years of ministry, Roman soldiers would mockingly kneel before Jesus saying He was the “King of the Jews” as they laughed.
They blindfolded Him and then punched Him in the face and then tell Him to judge who it was that had hit him.
But when Jesus foretold of this judgment that was committed to Him here in John, He was speaking of a day a little further down the road.
    You see Romans 2:16 says
    Romans 2:16 KJV 1900
In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.
    Revelation 20:11–15 KJV 1900
And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
Friend, the final Judge at that final day of Judgment will be the true King of Kings and Lord of Lords!
It is Jesus Who is the ultimate Judge!
    Philippians 2:6–11 KJV 1900
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
One day those Roman guards will kneel before Him again… but this time they will be judged for their sin by the One they Mocked!
What gives Him the right to be the judge?
Because He is the perfect spotless Lamb of God!
    Jesus’s judgment shows His deity!
APPLICATION: And Jesus has every right to be your judge!
    Ecclesiastes 12:13–14 KJV 1900
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
If you don’t know Christ as Savior this morning, you are on your way to that Great White Throne Judgment
And on that day, you will stand before Jesus, but on that day it won’t be as the One Who came to save you
He will be the One there to judge you.
Because if you reject His free gift of eternal life, His sacrifice of His life that He gave for you on the cross, you will stand before Jesus on that day and He will judge you for the works you did to try to earn your salvation.
But the Bible is clear, Romans 3:23
    Romans 3:23 KJV 1900
    For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Your good works wont be enough
Your observing of some supposed sacraments wont be enough
    Your baptism wont be enough
    Your religion wont be enough
Your personal feeling about the way things should be or what you believe, wont be enough
Because Jesus was so good to give you His written Word so that you could know how to go to heaven
He didn’t hide it from you!
But if you rejected it, on that day He will stand before you as Judge
And His judgement will be as Matthew 7:23
    Matthew 7:23 KJV 1900
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Oh friend, don’t meet Jesus on that day of the Great White Throne Judgment!
Accept Him as your Savior this morning
    Romans 10:9–10 KJV 1900
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
If you have accepted Christ, then I have great news today… You won’t be there at the Great White Throne Judgment
No as Christians you face a different type of Judgment
It’s called the Judgment Seat of Christ.
And at that judgment seat of Christ, you will be judged for the works you did for Christ after you received Him as your Savior
On that day you will receive rewards for the works you did for Christ.
But those rewards aren’t for your trophy case or for your glory
They will be rewards that you will be able to cast at Jesus’s feet.
You’ll be able to come to the One who gave everything for you and to say, “Jesus I did this for you!”
But the Bible tells us there will be some that will stand before Christ on that day empty handed.
They still will go to heaven, but they will stand before Jesus and they will have to admit they lived their life for themselves.
After Jesus gave them everything, they took the life He left them with and they lived it for their own fulfillment.
The Bible tells us that one day in eternity Jesus will wipe all tears from our eyes.
I can’t help but wonder if many of those tears will be Christians who wished they would have lived their life for Jesus instead of themselves!
“Living a life that points others to God, is a wonderful way to say ‘thank you’ to Jesus.”
Friend, I want to spend my life accumulating crowns and rewards, that one day I can give to Jesus.
    Matthew 6:19–21 KJV 1900
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
    Jesus’s Judgment Shows His Deity

V.23, JESUS’S HONOR SHOWS HIS DEITY

    John 5:23 KJV 1900
That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
    EXPLANATION: Now this is important…
    Isaiah 42:8 KJV 1900
I am the Lord: that is my name: And my glory will I not give to another, Neither my praise to graven images.
This honor, this praise that Jesus talked about, was a praise and honor that is reserved for God alone!
    And yet Jesus welcomed it!
    Luke 19:37–40 KJV 1900
And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
The Pharisees were in an uproar because the disciples of Jesus were worshipping Him.
And Jesus makes clear, that if the people didn’t worship and praise Him, the very rocks of the ground would cry out in praise to Jesus!
ILLUSTRATION: I heard a message by a preacher as a teenager, and I’ll never forget the title of his message, it was, “If the rocks could speak”
A talked of the stone manger that Jesus was likely laid in at His birth
He spoke of the stones the people sat upon when Jesus gave His sermon on the mount
He spoke of the stone at the tombs where the Maniac of Gaderra had the demons cast out
He mentioned the stones that fell to the ground when the people came to stone the woman caught in adultery and Jesus told them “he that is without sin, let him cast the first stone.”
He talked of the stone that was rolled away at Lazarus’s tomb
He spoke of the stones that likely were found there in the Garden of Gethsemene
He talked of the stone Jesus was stretched across when the Cat of Nine Tails ripped across His back.
He solemnly spoke of the stone that made up that hill called Golgatha that resembled a skull.
He spoke of the stones where the blood of Jesus fell upon as He hung on that cross.
But then he reminded of the stone that was rolled away 3 days later when Jesus rose from the grave!
Oh if the stones could speak, they would cry out in praise to Jesus!
EXPLANATION: And Jesus was worthy of all the honor and all the praise, because Jesus is God!
And the praise doesn’t come from any greater than when it comes from God the Father who in Hebrews 1:8 said of Jesus
    Hebrews 1:8 KJV 1900
But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
The honor and the praise isn’t any more powerful, than when it comes from God the Father Himself!
Oh, and by the way… when the Pharisees told Jesus that He needed to stop His disciples from praising Him… Well that happened on Palm Sunday.

    CONCLUSION

And now friend, here we are 2000 years later, on Palm Sunday, and can I tell you today, He is still worthy of all the praise!
    Revelation 4:11 KJV 1900
Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
    Revelation 5:12 KJV 1900
Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
    Philippians 2:10–11 KJV 1900
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Friend, Jesus has proved that He is God! The fingerprints are all over it!
As we finish this morning, I wonder if there is any proof that He is God of your life?
Is there any evidence in your life that proves you are a child of God controlled by Jesus Christ?
Or is the evidence pretty scarce?
Would you instead be convicted of living a life of selfish fulfillments?
Would you be convicted of being one thing at church and someone else the rest of the week?
I hope this morning there would be a different kind of conviction that takes place… one that takes place in your heart.
You see Jesus is God… He proved it!
But you have to decide this morning if He is God of your life.
On this Palm Sunday, may you bow the knee before the only God worthy of your worship.
Make Him God of your life today!
