  • JOHN 5:24 | YOU CAN TRUST HIM

ILLUSTRATION: Have you ever heard someone speak, and you didn’t really know the person, but based on how they talked you just felt like they were trustworthy?
For me, it’s a preacher named Alistair Begg.
He pastor Parkside Church in Cleveland, OH for over 40 years until his retirement in 2025.
    I’ve never met him
I’ve never heard him speak in person
I don’t really know much about his background outside of where he pastored.
But there’s something about him that just makes me feel like I trust him.
When he speaks, I just feel like I can accept it as true and accurate.
And I think I know what the thing is that makes him so trustworthy.
Alistair Begg is from Scottland and speaks with a Scottish accent.
And I’m just convinced that a Scottish accent makes you sound more trustworthy.
I’m so convinced of this, that for the remainder of the service I’m going to give you my best Scottish accent and we will see if you trust it more.
    Just kidding!
EXPLANATION: If you haven’t been with us, we have been walking through the book of John verse by verse for multiple months now.
And this morning as we look at a single verse, if I could speak in a Scottish accent I would because I want you to trust what is said.
But instead I’m going to do you one even better.
I want you not to hear what I have to say… I want you to hear from the voice of Jesus.
You see here in John 5:24, the Bible says, “John 5:24
    John 5:24 KJV 1900
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
If you are only following along on the screen you miss an important part of studying your Bible
If you have a Bible like mine, there are certain words that are written in red.
Those words were printed in read to differentiate them from the other words.
Now all of the this book is the Word of God and you can trust every part of it.
But the Words written in red are written because they are spoken by someone
And the one speaking them is really Who this whole book is all about…
They are the words of Jesus.
So when the Bible records here, “I say unto you” you can trust them not because they are spoken in a Scottish accent.
You can trust them because they are said by Jesus Christ!
Last week, looked at the verses immediately prior in which Jesus laid out three evidences of His deity.
You see, Jesus wasn’t just some man
    Jesus wasn’t some prophet
Jesus wasn’t just some good person
Jesus was God in the flesh!
    Philippians 2:9–11 KJV 1900
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
He is the one Whom Isaiah in the OT prophesied of when he wrote: Isaiah 9:6
    Isaiah 9:6 KJV 1900
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon his shoulder: And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
He is the one that the prophet foretold of His birth in Matthew 1:23
    Matthew 1:23 KJV 1900
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
He is the one Who Paul wrote of in 1 Timothy 3:16
    1 Timothy 3:16 KJV 1900
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
Jesus wasn’t just a prophet, or a priest, or a good person… He is God!
So you can mark it down, when Jesus speaks, you can trust His Words!
And here in John 5:24, what He says is something that offers hope to every person here today.
In fact, it isn’t an overstatement to say, it is the most important message that you will ever hear in your life!
    So listen close…
If you need to pretend its said in a Scottish accent, you can, but ultimately I want you to listen to the words spoken by the Lord Jesus, because they are the most important words you will hear in your life.
    He begins by saying,

V.24, YOU MUST HEAR WHAT HE SAYS

    John 5:24 KJV 1900
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
EXPLANATION: The word “heareth” means to “listen intently”
    A purposeful, intentional, focus
ILLUSTRATION: Last year, we had the blessing of meeting my parents for a vacation in Hawaii.
We shared a house with them and enjoyed a week together with them.
During our stay, Tressa and I got a Groupon to go on a night swim with manta rays.
Now if you don’t know what a manta ray is, you and are in the same boat I was when we signed up for this little adventure.
The night came and we drove to the boat dock where we were supposed to meet and then we Tressa and I met up with a group of other strangers who thought it would be a good idea to get into the ocean in the dark.
Now, while I have a healthy fear of the dark, I also have skin the color of skim milk that is virtually transparent in the winter time, and any time we go to the beach I have to spend most of my time under an umbrella, so going out in the dark did have it’s advantages…
    No sunscreen needed.
When we prepared to get onto the boat, the captain of this trip went through a few of the rules.
I don’t remember everything he covered but I remembered he had one non-negotiable…
When you get in the water, you were not allowed to kick and flail… you had to swim calmly.
Explain the board and the manta ray experience.
The time finally came that we needed to get out of the water and we all began to swim back to the boat and as we did the captain reminded us to do it slowly.
There was one person left to get in the boat, when the guide that had been in the water with us told the captain that he was keeping an eye on “Tony”
That captain ushered the final person into the boat and at that point he let us know that swimming below us had been a 16’ Tiger Shark.
And the reason they didn’t want us to splash in the water, was because we would have attracted the shark.
I am so thankful I “listened intently” that night… because my life depended on it!
EXPLANATION: What Jesus says here is so important… because your eternity depends on it.
Jesus says, “He that heareth my word”
He wants you to listen intently to what His word says!
    Why is this so important?
Because there is a lot of religion that adds a lot to the Word of God.
Religion says, “You have to do a bunch of things to earn eternal life.”
Religion creates a checklist that you need to do so you can get your reward.
Just check all these boxes and then you will have eternal life.
    Go to church
    Be a good person
Make sure your good outweighs your bad
Do religious rituals like get baptized and confess your sins to someone
Say certain words and pray a certain prayer
And then you will have eternal life.
    Just check the boxes!
Religion is really good at not listening intently to God’s Word and just making up a bunch of things
APPLICATION: Friend, how well do you listen this morning?
Some of you are thinking, “what did he just say?”
Maybe I should ask your spouse this morning.
Will you choose this morning to listen intently to what God’s Word says?
Not to what some religion my say
You see friend, on this earth, we live under these religious denominational banners.
Baptist, Buddist, Mormon, Jehovah’s Witness, Catholic, Community Church, Bible Church, Church of Christ, Assembly, or any number of thousands of others.
But it doesn’t matter what any religion tells you that you have to do to get to heaven.
The only thing that matters is what this Book says.
Because this is God’s Word… and what it says is the final authority.
Not your opinion or what you think
And not what some priest or preacher says either.
It’s what this book has to say!
So based on that, you have to determine this morning, will you listen intently to what God’s Word says?
Jesus challenged them and us here today with the challenge, YOU MUST HEAR WHAT HE SAYS.

V.24, YOU MUST TRUST ON GOD

    John 5:24 KJV 1900
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
EXPLANATION: Now notice what Jesus didn’t say… He didn’t say “believe IN him that sent me.”
You know there are a lot of people that believe IN God.
I talk to people all the time and they tell me, “Oh ya Kyle, I believe in God… so I’m good.”
Well friend, can I just share with you what the Bible says about believing in God… Since we just agreed we must hear what He says.
    James 2:19 KJV 1900
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
God’s Word says that the devils, the demons believe in God.
Can I tell you who isn’t going to be in heaven someday… the devil and demons.
So, if you are here today and you say, “Kyle, I believe in God… isn’t that enough?”
I’ve got bad news… you’re in the same place as the demons.
And believing in God isn’t enough to get anyone to heaven.
ILLUSTRATION: Most in this room have probably flown in a plane before.
My very first flight was when I was 18 years old.
It was me, my dad, and my friend Ben and we were flying out to California to see visit the Christian college I would be attending.
I remember Ben and I both had our cameras that we used to record the take off and the landing.
And I remember taking the trifold card out as the flight attendant walked through all the safety features of the aircraft we were on.
I spent most of the flight looking out the window just blown away by the sights from so far in the sky.
Since that day I’ve flown more times than I can count over the past 18 years.
Now when I get on a plane, I am usually able to fall asleep before the flight attendant even begins to walk through the safety features!
You know the thing about flying in an airplane is you actually have to get into the airplane.
What if I walked up to the ticket counter, and scanned my ticket, and then told the person checking us in, “I believe in that plane.”
But then I just stood there and looked through the window.
“I not only believe in that plane, I believe that plane could fly me to my destination.”
Standing looking out the window of the terminal, I yell at the top of my voice, “I believe in that plane and that plane can fly me to my destination.”
I mean I really really really believe in that plane.
But I never actually get on the plane…
That plane is never going to get me to my destination I want to go, unless I actually trust the plane and climb inside of it.
EXPLANATION: When Jesus said “believe on him that sent me”, the words “believe on” literally mean to “trust in”
You see when I climb into that plane I am putting my full faith and trust in the pilots of that plane and in the structural integrity of that plane to get me where I want to go.
There is nothing that I am doing to get myself there, outside of trusting in the object of my faith to get me there!
Paul told the Philippians jailor in Acts 16:31
    Acts 16:31 KJV 1900
And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
He said this is an offer that is available to you and your whole family… believe ON the Lord Jesus Christ!
Friend, when you go from believing in God, to trust ON God… it changes everything!
Because when you trust on Jesus Christ, it means you are forsaking all other options and ways to get to heaven on your own.
Jesus said it this way in John 14:6
    John 14:6 KJV 1900
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
    Romans 4:4–5 KJV 1900
Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
    Ephesians 2:8–9 KJV 1900
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Friend, the only way to have eternal life, is through trusting on Jesus Christ to save you from your sins.
But why is it that Jesus can save you from your sins?
Well as we already mentioned, He is God.
But not only that, Jesus died on the cross to pay for your sins.
It’s one of my favorite verses in the whole Bible, Romans 5:8
    Romans 5:8 KJV 1900
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
    Friend, you are a sinner.
    Romans 3:10 KJV 1900
As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
    Romans 3:23 KJV 1900
    For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
The Bible is very clear in Romans 6:23
    Romans 6:23 KJV 1900
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The payment for your sins is eternal death… separation from God… in a lake of fire.
But God offers you a gift this morning… it’s the gift of eternal life…
But it’s only available God’s way… Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
You see friend, there’s a moment when you transfer your total dependance from what you can do to get to heaven to what Jesus did for you.
He paid that debt you could not pay and gave you a gift you do not deserve.
And Jesus tells us what it is in the rest of the verse

    V.24, YOU GET ETERNAL LIFE

    John 5:24 KJV 1900
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
EXPLANATION: Jesus says, you have “everlasting life”
Before receiving Jesus you are condemned in your sins… but when you trust on Jesus Christ… when you step onto His plane… you pass from death unto life!
APPLICATION: When you accept Jesus as your Savior…
When you trust ON the Lord Jesus Christ and you ask Him to forgive you for your sins, you are given in that moment and forevermore, ETERNAL LIFE!
It’s something you can never lose and it can never be taken away.
It is the greatest gift you could ever receive!
Friend you could empty the ocean with a tea cup before you will reach the end of eternal life!
    It never ends!
But it’s only possible by trusting ON the Lord Jesus Christ to save you.
Friend if you have never accepted Jesus as your Savior, you can do it right where you are seated today.
EXPLANATION: Now this is the best part of the message… because now I get to tell you why Jesus has the authority to be the One to save you from your sins!
    Yes Jesus is God!
Yes Jesus died on the cross!
    It was gruesome
    It was torture
It was a moment that all seemed hopeless.
And if that’s where the story ended we would be hopeless.
In fact Paul actually talks about how hopeless things would be in 1 Corinthians 15:14-19
    1 Corinthians 15:14–19 KJV 1900
And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
Paul says, if Jesus is still in the grave we have no hope!
    But it doesn’t end there
    1 Corinthians 15:20 KJV 1900
But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
On the third day… the first day of the week, the ladies came to the tomb to anoint the dead body of Jesus with oils and fragrances.
    But Matthew 28:5-6
    Matthew 28:5–6 KJV 1900
And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
And today “I serve a risen Savior, He’s in the world today… I know that He is living, whatever men may say!”
“Low in the grave he lay, Jesus my Savior, waiting the coming day, Jesus my Lord! Up from the grave He arose, with a mighty triumph over His Foes!”
“There in the ground, His body lay. Light of the world in darkness slain. Then bursting forth in glorious day, up from the grave He rose again. And as He stands in victory! Sins curse has lost it’s grip on me… for I am His and He is mine, bought with the precious blood of Christ!”

    CONCLUSION

Friend, this morning, you can trust His Word!
He wants you to HEAR WHAT HE SAYS
He wants you to TRUST ON JESUS AS YOUR SAVIOR
He wants you to EXPERIENCE THE ETERNAL LIFE HE OFFERS
Stop trying to do it your way… As Alistair Begg says in his Scottish accent, “the man on the middle cross says you can come!”
And you can come because Jesus didn’t stay there…
He rose again, and He is alive today, and He offers to you eternal life this morning.
Jesus says unto you, “John 5:24
    John 5:24 KJV 1900
He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
It isn’t in a Scottish accent, but it’s no less true… Jesus is Risen… and He wants you to have eternal life today… You can trust Him!
