- Newman tells the story of a group of single guys living in Florida about the time of hurricane David (1979).— Trying to secure the houseboat they had recently purchased, and their plan involved all the rope they could get, tied to everything they could find…— An old man came along, and, after looking at what they had done, and getting a good laugh, the old man said: “Boys, your only hope is to anchor deep, leave the rope slack, and hope for the best.”Why is that how we secure boats in a hurricane if we want them to survive?— the storm surge will overwhelm a secured boat…The same is true for us….
James 1:2 NIV 2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,John 16:33 NIV 33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”When the trials of life come our way, and threaten to overwhelm us, Jesus tells us to “anchor deep, and pray for the best!”Luke 11:2 NIV 2 He said to them, “When you pray, say: “ ‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.Matthew 6:10 NIV 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. What did we talk about last time we were together? Does anyone remember? We talked about the first part of that verse, “Father, hallowed be your name…”, and what does that mean for us?— We are to set God aside as Holy in our lives, AND set ourselves aside as Holy to Him.What does it take to do that?— Trust! We have to believe that God is who He says He is, and that He will do what He says He will do for us!We have to put our complete trust in Him!That’s what this whole verse is saying!“Your kingdom come, Your will be done.”We cannot seek His kingdom, and see “His will be done,” if we don’t put our Hope and Trust in Him!BUT… (and this is a huge but)Can we really trust God?Many of us would say, “Well… Yes!!!” BUT… Do we really put our trust in Him with all of our life? Not just the parts we are willing to let go of, BUT EVERYTHING!!That’s what this verse is asking: Do you Trust God with EVERYTHING?How many of y’all have ever played “King of the Hill”?— How did you play? What was the object?I think that is how many of us live, amen? (I know I’m guilty)— We live thinking that we are king of the hill.— — That we determine our destiny… we arrange our affairs… we govern our lives… We are in control… BUT…What happens when ______…?Do you see the issue in that thinking?— It is selfish and self-centered.Where is Christianity like that? Where in scripture does it tell us to be that way? What does scripture tell us to be?— Jesus didn’t say “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your strength, and with all your soul, and Place yourself above everyone else!” He said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your soul, and with all your strength AND Love your neighbor as yourself.”— In Acts 1:8 He says: “You will be my witnesses…”— Peter calls us “a royal priesthood, a holy nation…”Can we live up to that if we are busy fighting to be “King of the Hill”?— — NO!!! — —It is easy to pray “Your will be done,” but it’s not as easy to live it!It must be more than words!Who is your King?Truth nugget: “A king is not a king without a kingdom to rule.”Where does Jesus rule in your life?We spend so much time trying to do things for ourselves… trying to handle it all ourselves… trying to be “master” of our own little world… when what we need to be doing is resting in Our Father’s arms, and allowing Him to be King!Matthew 6:33 NIV 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. When we pray “Your Kingdom come, Your Will be done…” that is what we are doing.“Your Kingdom Come…” is an invitation… It’s a choice to say, “God, You are King of my hill.”Who remembers the radio show “Queen for a day.” (I think they made it into a tv show too)?— they chose a woman… showered her with lots of money and gifts… treated her as if she was the most special person in the world… BUT… only for a day!I wonder if that is how we treat God!— We let Him have a day… We sing praises and shower Him with love and affection… Then, we climb back to the top of the hill…Look what King David said in Psalm 44:4Psalm 44:4 NIV 4 You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob. Now, Look at his life!He was known as “a man after God’s own heart!”WHY?!?!Because he made God King of his hill.We all want to see God move in our lives, right? We want to see Him move in our families and through our church, right? So, here’s the Kingdom Question: “Who is the King of your life?”Calling Home is a choice… Giving our hill to God is a choice… It’s not easy, but… It is the most rewarding thing you will ever do.Matthew 6:33 NIV 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.(prayer/invitation) James 1:2NIV2011
