1 John 5:18-21NKJV

Phil 3:7-11NKJV

Conclusion: That You May Know

1 John 5:16-17; Philippians 3:7-11

Pastor Jon Hanson

Introduction

We now come to the summary of John's first epistle to the Church. John wrote this epistle during the early days of the Church. His primary concern was to speak out against those who denied the deity of Christ and the importance of fellowship with God. John wrote to a community of believers to combat false teachings introduced by heretics who had flourished in their midst and to encourage faithful continuance in Christ by having intimate fellowship with God and other believers and through full assurance of their eternal salvation.

We know that those born of God do not sin – v. 18

  • "We" is inclusive of all believers
  • There is something special about those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God – they do not sin! (1 John 3:9; 2 Cor 5:17)
  • One born of God "keeps himself" and is free from the wicked one

We know that we are of God – v. 19

  • The world is divided
  • Believers are empowered by God
  • The world is under the power of the wicked one

We know the Son of God – v. 20a

  • He has come
  • He has given us understanding
  • He is true
  • We are in Him

Conclusion – v. 20c-21

  • He is the true God
  • He is the life-giver
  • A final command: Keep yourselves from Idols

Timeless Truth

We know that those born of God do not sin. We know that we are of God. We know the Son of God as the true God and life-giver. And because of this understanding, we should focus on God and keep ourselves free of idols.

Living Lesson

How I live makes a difference! And I live according to what I believe about Jesus and His Word. They are true, and therefore they should impact my life. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord (2 Cor 15:58).
