Proverbs 3:1- 2 The Passion Translation
1–2 My child, if you truly want a long and satisfying life, never forget the things that I’ve taught you. Follow closely every truth that I’ve given you. Then you will have a full, rewarding life.
Many times we are taught that the Word of God is His instructions to us, and they tell us what not to do so that we can go to Heaven. This train of thought often comes from Exodus 20 with all of the “Thou Shalt Nots”. So then we live our lives trying to keep all of the commandments without truly understanding the reason why, and the results will come when we are dead. That was never God’s plan. Proverbs 3 explains that all of the instructions are to help us live here on earth, and not just live any kind of way. We are to live a long and satisfying life. The Lord doesn’t want us to just choose life, He wants us to enjoy this abundant life He died to give us access to.
When we have an understanding that out of His great love, God wants us to have a full and rewarding life it should change our attitude towards obedience. God’s whole plan is to get better life to us, and if we will obey His instructions we will live a rewarding life. If I trust that that is truly God’s plan, then it should change me. I no longer have to keep the commandments. Now, I want to keep the commandments. I follow His truth closely not because I have to but because I want to. I have a desire to please Him and to live life with Him. I’m not trying to see how much I can get away with and still get to Heaven. Instead, I’m trying to give my all and do my best because that is what I want to do. I pray today that you are freed from a spirit of duty. The one that makes you feel like you have to do things for God or the Church. Instead, I pray that you receive a spirit of freedom and truly experience the love of God and life in Christ.
Lord, open my eyes to Your love. Help me to understand how much You want me to have abundant life now on earth. Free me from a spirit of Christian duty and help me to walk in the freedom of the Holy Spirit. Empower me to follow You closely and remember what You have taught me. In Jesus’ Name…
