2 Timothy 1:7 The Passion Translation
For God will never give you the spirit of fear, but the Holy Spirit who gives you mighty power, love, and self-control.
All around me there is a great debate on whether or not it is officially Christmas season. It’s the middle of November and Christmas music is playing, my neighbors have their yard decorated for Christmas, and Christmas movies are showing on TV. Whether or not you are singing Christmas carols yet, it’s always appropriate to think about what God did and give thanks for what we have. We celebrate everything, not just Christmas because God gave. John 3:16 tells us that God gave His only son, and it really takes time to unwrap that gift. Believing that God gave us Jesus is not all that’s in the gift. In Jesus we have been given everything we need for life, and it is up to us to pull each gift out of the package.
Paul’s letters to Timothy are to a young believer who is unpacking this gift we have in Jesus, and he tells him, and subsequently us, that God did not give us the spirit of fear. It’s important to understand that everything going on in this world is not a gift from God. We have to know and understand the character of God to discern the gifts of God. Fear, and anything connected to it, is not from God. Fear is not just being afraid, it’s worrying and being anxious because of what we are afraid of or what we are afraid will happen. The spirit of fear is one that enslaves us. It paralyzes us naturally and neutralizes us spiritually. When we receive the spirit of fear, it blocks the power of faith in our lives. We can’t walk by faith because we’re afraid. We don’t pray because we’re afraid God won’t answer. We don’t confess the Word because we’re afraid we’ll sound stupid, and we end up not living a life of faith and missing out on what God has given us. So today, I invite you to give thanks to God because He did not give you a spirit of fear. He does not want you to be anxious, and He has the power to free you from what fear wants to do to your life.
Thank You Lord for your gifts. Thank You for life, and thank You for the power to overcome fear. Show me where fear has me paralyzed or neutralized. I want to be delivered so that I can live by faith. Holy Spirit, reveal every area of fear in my life and help me give it all to you. In Jesus’ Name...
