Welcome
We welcome you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
We hope you will be encouraged and edified, having heard Biblical
truth in love.
Great Basin RP is a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of
North America, one of the oldest denominations in the United States.
We are committed to the doctrines of Scripture and the formation of
loving community as a necessary fruit of the Gospel.
In light of the above, we believe that the most comprehensive and accurate summary of biblical teaching is found in the Westminster Confession of Faith, together with the Westminster Larger and
Shorter Catechisms. These documents were completed in 1647 as a summary of Christian belief and practice, with the desired intention of helping Christ’s church become unified in doctrine, government, and worship (John 17:11). In addition to the Westminster Standards, we also maintain the Testimony of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of
North America, which is our denomination’s own continuing and contemporary application of the Word of God to our current culture and context.

The Path to True Comfort (Isaiah 40:3-5)
Introduction/Review
Theme: Comfort will be found in God coming to His people as their King; therefore they must prepare themselves for comfort by exercising faith and repentance towards Him
The Promise of God’s arrival as King (Vs 3)
The Voice in the Wilderness (Vs 2,3)
God’s Covenant Faithfulness in coming to them in the Wilderness
The Fulfillment of John the Baptist (Mark 1:1-11)
Application: The Reality of Christ/Effectual Call forms faith and Repentance within us
The Response of Faith/Repentance (Vs 4)
The Relationship of Faith and Repentance
The Faith-filled Response of God’s People
The Faith Inspired Repentance of God’s People
“Those that are hindered from comfort in Christ by a proud conceit of their own merit and worth are the mountains and hills that must be made low. Those that have entertained prejudices against the word and ways of God, that are intractable, and disposed to thwart and contradict even that which is plain and easy because it agrees not with their corrupt inclinations and secular interests, are the crooked that must be made straight and the rough places that must be made plain.” – Matthew Henry
Application: We grow in faith by likewise growing in Repentance.
Assurance being Grounded in God’s Word (Vs 5)
Application: Our knowledge of Christ, our faith, and our Repentance are all objectively grounded in the Word of God.

This Week’s Confessional Meditation
16. There are in the Scripture doctrines which unassisted reason could never have discovered; and yet, when revealed, are perfectly intelligible by the human mind. Other doctrines are taught in Scripture which human reason cannot fully comprehend and which must be received on the authority of God. Isa. 40:13; 1 Cor. 1:20; Ps. 119:130; 1 Cor. 2:6-16.
17. We reject any suggestion that God uses human reason on a level with Scripture to reveal His truth.
18. Bible translations must combine faithfulness to the original text with the idiom of the native language, and thus will always be imperfect. The Church is responsible to examine the documents available to determine as far as possible what was originally written, and to study the translations as to their accuracy in conveying the meaning of the original, and to advise the public concerning them. Paraphrases, which interpret rather than translate, must be used with great caution.
19. All men have the right to read the Bible, to inquire into its meaning, and to adopt the doctrines it teaches. In studying the Bible men must depend upon the illumination of the Holy Spirit. They must use God-given human faculties and search in earnest for the truth, in submission to the authority of Scripture. In interpreting the Bible consideration must be given to the historical situation in which the passage was written, to the grammatical structure, and to the literary form. The instruction and counsel of fellow believers, of teachers of the Word, and creeds and confessions of the Church should be given due consideration. When men understand the message of the Bible, they must earnestly seek to obey that message in all that they think and do. Acts 2:42; John 5:39; 2 Tim. 2:15; Acts 17:11.
From the Pastor’s Study
But in addition to the spiritual renovation and ‘enlightening of the eyes’ known as the new birth, members of the redeemed community have to be continually given ‘the internal testimony of the Holy Spirit’ to hear ‘God in person speaking in it,’ and whereby ‘The same Spirit, therefore, who has spoken through the mouths of the prophets must penetrate into our hearts to persuade us that they faithfully proclaimed what had been divinely commanded. To know God and his truth, one needs the continuous help of the Holy Spirit. Discussing Paul’s prayer in Colossians 1:9-10 (‘We ceased not to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of God in all spiritual wisdom and understanding in order that you may walk worthily before God…’), Calvin adds:
‘Nor does Scripture teach that our minds are illumined only on one day and that they may thereafter see of themselves. For what I have just quoted from Paul has reference to continuing progress and increase. David has aptly expressed it in these words: ‘With my whole heart I have sought thee; let me not wander from thy commandments’ [Ps. 119:10]. Although he had been reborn and had advanced to some extent in true godliness, he still confesses that he needs continual direction at every moment, lest he decline from the knowledge with which he has been endowed.’
‘Accordingly,’ Calvin sees that ‘without the illumination of the Holy Spirit, the Word can do nothing. Therefore, since the Holy Spirit is given in prayer, as Christ tells us (Luke 11:13), Calvin – with Athanasius, Hilary, Augustine, Anselm and the whole company of the Church Fathers – holds that prayer for the illumination of the Holy Spirit is the atmosphere of true theological work.
‘Clearly, then, to pray rightely is a rare gift… our intention is that, loathing our inertia and dullness, we should seek such aid of the Spirit. And indeed, Paul when he enjoins us to pray in the Spirit [1 Cor. 14:15], does not stop urging us to watchfulness. He means that the prompting of the Spirit empowers us so to compose prayers as by no means to hinder out own effort, since in this matter God’s will is to test how effectually faith moves our hearts.” – Douglas Kelly, Systematic Theology, Vol. 1, Pg 57
