- Today we move on to the last of the prayer the “lead us not” portion. This is the last petition of the prayer, a petition of protection. Now we need to understand a couple of things about temptation first is that none of us are immune to temptation, if the Son of God was tempted then so will you. Temptation when not given into builds our spiritual strength, and none of our temptations come from God, but His word tells us that when temptation comes He provides a way of escape so that we can endure the temptation.
Matthew 6:9–11 ESV 9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread,Matthew 6:12–13 ESV 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.Matthew 6:14–15 ESV 14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.Matthew 6:13 ESV 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.“lead us not into temptation”— Jesus includes in His foundation prayer a request for help. This also shows us that we are all fallible. No one is above yielding to temptation in its multi varied forms, So, Jesus teaches us a need to pray for our spiritual protection. When you look at the entire prayer it starts at the top with our understanding of who God is, our Father, down to our understanding of who we are, His sinful children. Proper prayer includes prayer for our spiritual protection. The Bible is clear that temptation is an unavoidable part of our human existence. So, if temptation is a part of our life what are we praying for, it is a prayer for us not to come under the power of the temptation that will overcome us and cause us to sin. Temptation is a necessary part of our lives in order to help develop our moral character. When we conquer temptation, it grows us builds our character, our moral strength. James 1:2-3.James 1:2–3 ESV 2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.Matthew 6:13 ESV 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.We need to see the weakness of our own flesh. So, the proper prayer for our protection is full of our awareness that we are profoundly weak and liable to failure. There is a danger in pious bravado that assumes we are to strong to stumble. “deliver us from evil” some translations say from the “evil one”. One of the things we need to understand is that contrary to what many people believe the devil is a real person, not just some impersonal cosmic force. Quote from pg 201. By praying for God to “deliver us from the evil one”, we are in the same breath we acknowledge God’s power is greater. God is greater! The assaults we face are incessant, and we need to recognize our frailty and weakness, and we must lean on God’s power and understanding that without His power we cannot stand. When we pray for delivery from the evil one we acknowledge that victory over satan is only through God’s power. This prayer shows us that our victory lies in God’s power.Matthew 6:14 ESV 14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you,Matthew 6:15 ESV 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.Jesus is not saying we can earn God’s forgiveness by forgiving others, but it is this, if we cannot forgive others than we have not truly been forgiven because we have not yeilded our life to Christ.
