- Today we are talking about worry. This is something we have discussed in the past, but as we move through the Sermon on the Mount here we are again. I think it is very fitting we are here again now. Jesus is still working to teach us about the improper focus of our lives. Where is our hearts focus. So, what is worry, well it is to give way to anxiety or unease, allow one’s mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles—or a state of anxiety and uncertainty over actual or potential problems. That’s me I am one who over thinks and worries about potential problems. There is research that shows that 85% of what we worry about never happens, and the 15% that does happen is not as bad as the person thought it would be. Now lets see what our Lord says about worry.
Matthew 6:25–27 ESV 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?Matthew 6:28–30 ESV 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?Matthew 6:31–34 ESV 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.Matthew 6:25 ESV 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? If we are laying up our treasures in heaven, because that is where our focus is, we should not be anxious about our life. If we are living a life with Kingdom focus, we have no need to worry about our life. Now Jesus is not promoting a “who cares” attitude, there are things we should be concerned about, our concerns should be the same as Jesus concerns—like the spiritual well being of others—glorifying God—working to accomplish the will of the Father. Jesus gives us some specific areas to not worry about, and these things are the basic necessities of life. God is a God of provision He provides for the needs of His children. He never promises a life of ease or a life with no problems, but He promises to be with us and to provide for our needs. satan uses a lie that causes us to doubt God, he says we know better than God. This lie causes us to be anxious, and anxiety paralyzes and chokes out God’s word in our lives. satan says God doesn’t know better, He can’t provide for us. We must submit to the sovereignty of God, and trust in His word. He is with us in the mess.Philippians 4:6 LEB 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.We can also use prayer to combat anxiety.Matthew 6:26 ESV 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?We are the pinnacle of God’s creation, made in His image, like no other creation. Jesus uses God’s creation to make His point, and He starts with birds. Jesus asks are we not of more value than the birds, and the answer is yes. Maybe you have bought into satan’s lies about yourself, God doesn’t care for me, I’m not important, or I am not worth the trouble. Let me ask you this what gives something worth or value—it is the price someone is willing to pay for it right. Look at this painting. It does not look good to me, but it is worth 3.8 million dollars. Now think of it this way God paid the price of His only Son for us, so we have infinite value. He offered His perfect only Son for you and I. God loves us so much that He made Him who knew no sin to become sin so that we could become the righteousness of God. If He gave His Son for us, why would He not provide for our other needs as well.Matthew 6:27 ESV 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? Are we God? Then what do we think we can accomplish with worry and anxiety. We can not add anytime to our lives, and anxiety can cause a long list of health issues, and it can paralyze us and satan loves it when he can render us ineffective by giving us paralysis—we are consumed with anxiety and focus on the wrong things.Matthew 6:28–30 ESV 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?Jesus again uses God’s creation to show His care and concern for us. In verse 30 the last part of this verse Jesus gets to the heart of it. “O you of little faith”. To put it very bluntly worry and anxiety are a lack of faith. We say, but we do not truly believe. We over analyze, we buy into the lies of this world which are satan’s lies. You are not good enough, you have sinned to much for God to love you, that’s not really what God said.Matthew 6:31–32 LEB 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?,’ 32 for the pagans seek after all these things. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.Don’t act like the world seeking after worldly things, because if God provides for His creation. We His children, will He not provide for our needs. Even the good earthly fathers give what is needed how much more will our perfect heavenly Father provide.Matthew 6:33–34 LEB 33 But seek first his kingdom and righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow, because tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.The first thing we should do is seek God’s Kingdom. Jesus promises if we seek Him first all our needs will be provided for. Okay are we seeking His Kingdom first, is He our focus. What Jesus tells us here “seek first” is in the present imperative which means it is a continual quest for God’s Kingdom and God’s righteousness. If we constantly seek Him there will be no room for lesser matters, the cares of today will fade. There is enough trouble and evil in our world, so why would we want to make it worse by being anxious.Buying Into the LiesHave you bought into satan’s lies, does anxiety or worry consume your life so much so that God is no longer your focus. How do we combat these lies, with the truth of God’s word—we must be in the Word, internalizing God’s truths so that when satan says a lie we can replace it with the truth , just like Jesus did when He was tempted. What are you worrying about today, give it to God and trust in Him. Hebrews 13:5-6. Matthew 6:25–27ESV
