  • Today we continue on in the Sermon on the Mount and we are talking about asking, seeking, and knocking. Jesus has already given us the model prayer and now He gives us a little more to add to our prayer life. Now before we dive into the word I want to be very clear Jesus is not some wish grantor, He is not a slot machine where you pull the handle enough times and you get a prize. This does not say that you can name it and claim it. So, lets see what Jesus does mean .
    Matthew 7:7–8 ESV
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
    Matthew 7:9–11 ESV
9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
    Matthew 7:7 ESV
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
Jesus continues to teach the principle of persistent reliance on the Father. We see first three commands—ask, seek, knock— and these three verbs command an ascending intensity. Ask—implies asking for a need, and then seek also involves asking, but it adds action to it. Then knock it involves, asking and acting, but it also adds persevering. These three words in the Greek are present imperatives, which means a command to continuous action. We do not ask, seek, and knock only once. It is something that continues day in and day out. Our text literally reads keep asking and it will be given, keep seeking and you will find, keep knocking and it will be opened. we are to passionately persist in prayer. Do we persist in our prayers for spiritual growth for ourselves and others. Or are we solely focused on our wants. Do we ask, seek and knock for God’s will to be done, do we ask, seek, and knock for Him to help us live the Kingdom life, to help our lives mirror the Beatitudes. The sight of God’s perfect standard and our sin drives us to our knees and His Grace. We learn that there is no hope apart from His unearned favor. We are to ask, and keep on asking for those things that will make us more like Jesus.
    Matthew 7:8 ESV
8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
Jesus then tells us if we humbly persistently pursue God, we will receive Him. Persistently praying and confident that our Father will provide what is best for us according to His—His sovereign will. Jesus now moves to some comparison to make His point, about God’s provision.
    Matthew 7:9–10 ESV
9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?
If our children ask us to meet their needs, will we not meet them. If your kids are hungry you don’t let them starve. No you provide for their needs.
    Matthew 7:11 ESV
11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
So, if we who are evil give good things how much more good will be what God gives us. God always gives us what is good, always for our benefit, whether we are willing to accept that or not. As a parent have you ever been doing something you thought was right only to find out you were wrong (pertaining to kids), well God is never wrong. God will give us anything that is good for us spiritually—when He knows we are ready. Luke gives another gift from God.
    Luke 11:13 ESV
13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Do we want the character of the kingdom in our lives through the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Then we must ask persistently, keep seeking and keep knocking.

    The Sermon on the Mount

Do we pursue the things of God, are we continually seeking after Him, or are we following the world.
