    The word ‘vision’ here is — divine revelation.
    The Word of God. The vision and the law are the same thing.
    Without Scripture, people do not just struggle. They perish.

    Sermon Introduction

    The question every human being eventually asks: where did we come from, and how did this all start?
    Not merely an academic question.
    The answer runs the operating system of everything else — worth, meaning, identity, what you do with your life.

    Every culture answers this question.

    Every answer carries assumptions about who you are and what you are worth.
    Egyptian religion was not primitive superstition. It was a complete worldview — a total account of reality, meaning, worth, and what happens when you die.
    It answered every question Genesis 1 answers. It just answered them differently.

    What Egypt said about God:

    No single God. Dozens of gods.
    The universe was not the work of one Creator. It was the product of divine conflict and negotiation.
    The gods were not all-powerful.
    Ra (the sun god) fought the giant serpent Apep every night in the underworld.
    If he lost, the sun would not rise.
    Priests performed elaborate rituals before dawn to help him win.
    The cosmic order was fragile and required human effort to sustain.
    The gods had backstories.
    They were born, they died, they were restored.
    They were players in a story that preceded them.
    None of them was ultimate.
    What Egypt said about the world:
    The Nile flooding on schedule meant Hapi the river god was pleased.
    A poor flood meant the gods were angry.
    Every harvest, every drought, every birth was a divine cause requiring ritual response.
    Nothing in nature was ordinary. Everything was a god.
    What Egypt said about you:
    Human beings were created to serve the gods through labor.
    You existed to meet the needs of beings more powerful than you.
    Worth equals output.
    A slave who could not work had no standing.
    Only Pharaoh bore the divine image — the son of Ra. No one else had that standing.
    Your eternal fate depended on your ritual performance in this life.
    What our world says:
    No author. No design. The universe appeared from nothing by chance. You are a product of an unguided process.
    Your worth is your output. Your value is your productivity, your appearance, your platform, your salary. A person who cannot produce has diminishing standing.
    You construct your own identity. You decide who you are. No one has the authority to tell you otherwise.
    When you die, nothing was lost except chemistry.
    Same story. Updated vocabulary. Different gods, same slavery.
    Israel did not observe this from a distance.
    They breathed it for four hundred years.
    Ten generations of children raised inside that story.
    It does not just change what you think. It changes what feels true.
    Genesis 1 was written for people coming out of Egypt. Every sentence is a direct answer to what Egypt said.

    The God who made everything by his word declared it finished and very good — which means he alone has the authority to tell you who he is, what the world is, and who you are.

    If the God of Genesis 1 is who he says he is — why we look to anyone else to tell us your reason for living.

    Genesis 1 makes three declarations that answered Egypt then and answer our world now:

    God alone is sovereign,
    Creation is not divine
    You were made in his image and invited to rest.

    I. God spoke and everything obeyed.

    A. There is one God and He has no origin.

    Genesis 1 starts with God. Nothing before him.

    Everything you can see or measure exists because he decided it would. He alone simply is.
    Egypt’s gods had birth stories. Ra emerged from the primordial waters.
    The God of Genesis 1 does not appear in someone else’s story. He writes it.

    B. God made everything from nothing.

    1. He did not reshape existing chaos. He made the stuff the stuff is made of.
    2. The worlds were not made from visible material. Hebrews 11:3 “3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”

    Nobel Prize-winning physicist Arno Penzias: ‘Astronomy leads us to a unique event, a universe created out of nothing, one with the very delicate balance needed to permit life, and one which has an underlying, one might say supernatural, plan.’
    Every craftsman starts with something. The sculptor needs stone. The painter needs canvas. Our God started with nothing becuase he needs nothing.

    C. God’s word creates order out of chaos immediately.

    The point: No struggle. No rival gods. No negotiation. No rituals required.
    God's power requires no assistance.
    Egypt's gods needed priests.
    Egypt's gods needed rituals.
    Egypt's gods needed human support.
    The God of Genesis simply speaks.
    God speaks. Creation obeys.
    Transition: God is sovereign over everything that exists. Now Moses turns to name the specific things Israel had spent their lives fearing as divine and does something devastating to them.

    II. Everything the world worships, God made.

    A. Moses will not name the sun and moon and that is awesome.

    Every nation around Israel had a name for what we call the sun.
    Moses calls it ‘the greater light.’ The divine name is stripped.
    Egypt’s highest god is Genesis 1’s light fixture. Not a deity requiring daily ritual. A lamp doing a job.

    Humanity worships the creature instead of the Creator.

    B. The thing Israel feared was made on a Tuesday.

    “He made the stars also.”
    Every star ever worshipped, consulted, or feared across every civilization in human history — an aside.
    Not even a full sentence. Genesis 1:16 “16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.”

    A Hebrew child born in Egypt watched priests perform the sunrise ritual every morning.
    This verse tells that child: the thing your whole life called god was made on a Tuesday.
    Counter-Egypt: Egypt performed daily ritual to keep the sun alive. Genesis 1 says God assigned it a function and it has obeyed ever since. No ritual required.

    These lights have a job description. To divide day from night. To rule the day and night. They rule only because God delegated it. They have no authority of their own.

    Illustration: A child lies awake terrified of the shape in the doorway. Her father turns on the light. It is a coat on a hook. That is what Genesis 1:16 does to Ra — and to every substitute we have ever been afraid of losing.

    Egypt worshipped the sun. Genesis calls it the greater light. Exodus turns it off. The God of Israel never had a rival. The thing Egypt called a god was a lamp hanging in His universe.

    C. Everything else in creation is good but none of it is God.

    Ancient philosophies taught that matter is corrupt — escape the physical, flee the body.
    Genesis says God looked at the physical world six times and called it good.
    The material world is not a prison. It is God’s handiwork.
    Fish, birds, animals — all blessed, all good, none divine.
    Every authority in the universe was made. Christ alone was not. Colossians 1:16 “16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:”

    Good but not God.
    A man trusting his savings to tell him he is secure.
    A woman waiting for her boss’s approval to tell her she has value.
    A teenager watching likes on a screen to find out if he matters.
    Real things. Useful things. Things God made. None of them can carry what belongs to the Creator alone.
    Same instinct, just different gods. Egypt feared the sun. We trust our portfolios and platforms. Genesis answers both with the same fivewords. “He made the stars also.”
    5. Paul stands in Athens surrounded by altars and makes the same argument. Moses made it first.

    The one who made everything the world worships was himself worshipped and went to a cross.
    Transition: Every false god dethroned. Every substitute exposed. Now day six. The text slows completely. The method changes. For the first time, God does not issue a command. He deliberates.

    III. You were made last, declared very good, and invited to rest.

    We do not come to Genesis 1 to prepare for debates. We come to meet our God. We come to find rest from the fear of living in a world created by gods of our own making.

    A. God gave every human being the dignity Egypt reserved for Pharaoh.

    Every prior day: ‘Let there be.’ Creation obeys and produces.
    Here: ‘Let us make.’ A decision within the Godhead.

    "The stars get half a sentence. Humanity gets repeated emphasis. Moses wants Israel to know something Egypt never told them: every person bears the image of God."
    Egypt: one person bore the divine image. Pharaoh. Son of the Sun
    Egypt gave divine status to one man and labor quotas to everyone else.

    B. Your worth was declared before you did anything.

    Ancient kings placed statues in conquered territory to declare ownership.
    God placed his image in creation.
    Every human being is a living declaration that this world belongs to him.
    This dignity arrives before achievement, before failure, before a diagnosis or a bank balance or a report card. It precedes everything you have ever done.

    Light — good.
    Sky — good.
    Land — good.
    Sun — good.
    Fish — good.
    Animals — good. Then you.
    Everything he had made — very good.
    Your presence changed the evaluation.
    Both male and female — explicitly.
    In every surrounding culture, women were property.
    Genesis 1:27 gives the full image to both. Equally.

    This was almost incomprehensible in the ancient world.
    In Egypt, a woman’s standing depended on her husband’s rank. Genesis 1:27 gives her the same image as Pharaoh claim to have.

    The galaxies are unimaginably larger than you.
    But you know they exist.
    They do not know you exist.
    Size is not the measure of value. You bear the image of God. A galaxy does not.

    C. The damaged image is being restored and God invites you into his rest.

    Someone is thinking: but we are fallen.
    We are broken. How can God say very good? He is not saying it about what we became. He is saying it about what he made. Genesis 1 is before the fall. Genesis 3 is the fall. The distance between them — between what he made and what we chose — is exactly what Christ came to close.

    In Egypt, slaves never rested. Rest was the privilege of the free.
    The Sabbath is not a regulation. It is a declaration: you are not a slave anymore.
    The rest God entered in Genesis 2 and the rest Christ offers are the same rest.

    The image of God does not. It was given.
    It cannot be constructed. It cannot be taken away.
    The image-bearer who perfectly bore the image, went to a cross for broken image-bearers.

    The Good News

    The God who needed nothing to begin, who made everything the world bows to, who declared you very good before you earned a single thing — that God died for you.
    The Word spoke of John 1 is the voice of Genesis 1.

    One God spoke and everything obeyed. He preceded everything, owes an explanation to no one, and created from nothing by his word alone.
    Everything the world bows to, he made. Not a rival. Not a threat. A creature with a job description.
    He made you in his image, declared you very good before you did a single thing, and built a finished world for you to live in — not a world requiring your performance to sustain it.
    Israel walked out of Egypt with the wrong story still running in their heads. God gave them this one.
    We live in our own Egypt.
    The culture has been telling you who you are since before you could think critically about what it was saying.
    Genesis 1 has a different answer. Older. Truer. From the only one who was actually there.

    The only question Genesis 1 leaves you with is this: whose voice are you going to believe?

    The culture’s answer says: you are an accident, your worth is your output, and you define yourself. That answer has been running for four thousand years and it has never once set anyone free.
    God’s answer says: I made you, I declared you very good, my Son died to restore what was broken, and the work is finished. Enter the rest.
