  • Psalm 93-99 - Enthronement Psalms
God’s reign and kingship over all of creation
Probably written by David - God’s Kingship supercedes all other kings.
    Psalm 95:3 ESV
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
    Psalm 96:10 ESV
Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns! Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.”
    Psalm 97:1 ESV
The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad!
    Psalm 98:8–9 ESV
Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.
    Psalm 99:4–5 ESV
The King in his might loves justice. You have established equity; you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob. Exalt the Lord our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he!
Psalm 100 is an invitation for the world to see and know and rejoice that there is a Great, eternal, faithful, just, righteous King who sits on his throne forever.
And, it shows the heart response of those who do see and know that - thankfulness.
    Gratitude.

Nobody would argue with the idea that it is good to be thankful person. But it is more than a general virtue; true thankfulness is tied directly to knowing God.

The “Who and What” of Thankfulness - vs. 3

Knowing the “who” teaches us the “what”
    Psalm 100:3 ESV
Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Yahweh is God - The creator, over all.
It is a fact we can know, but more than that, He is one whom we can know.
    John 17:1–2 ESV
When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.
    John 17:3 ESV
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
What does it mean to know someone?
    not a “name drop”
If you called them, would they answer?
If we find no reason to be thankful, do we know God, are we his? Because God’s children, God’s sheep, always have reason for thankfulness in their shepherd, in their father.
Hearing about someone, or being loosely acquainted with someone, is much different than knowing them.
The same is true with God - knowing about Him, even loosely agreeing with the idea that He exists, is different than calling out to Him.
Have you called out to Him?
What is your relationship with God right now?
    I believe in him
    I Think he’s real
    I think he’s important
    That is different than saying
I spoke with him this morning
I call out to Him all the time
I love Him because he loves and has forgiven me of all my sin
I depend on Him daily for my strength
I look to Him for answers for life’s questions
I trust in him to the very core of my being

The “Ways” of Thankfulness - vs. 1-2, 4

    Singing

    Psalm 100:1 ESV
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
    What is inside comes out.
    Colossians 3:15–17 ESV
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

    Serving

    Psalm 100:2 ESV
Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!
Basic meaning - to till the ground.

    Savoring

    Psalm 100:4 ESV
Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!
in the Old Testament System, there were specific sacrifices. Those sacrifices said “thank you,” but they also showed that the one being thanked was worth something.
    Romans 12:1 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

The “Why” of Thankfulness - vs. 5

    Psalm 100:5 ESV

    Psalm 93:1 ESV

    Psalm 147:1 ESV
Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting.
    Psalm 147:3 ESV
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
    John 17:3 ESV
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
