  • Messianic Psalm, like Psalm 22, Psalm 2,
Unlike others, though, this Psalm is explicitly and only about the messiah-king to come. Other messianic psalms hint at a king to come but also speak of a king who was ruling at that time, this one does not speak of the current earthly king - in fact, it is the current earthly king looking to one who would be his Lord.
    Matthew 22:41–45 ESV
Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet” ’? If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?”
    Romans 1:3–4 ESV
concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,

David was a good king, but he knew he wasn’t the final king. He looked to the Lord for one who would rule, reign, and save forever.

If the King needs a Savior, who will be your savior?

The Forever King - vs. 1-3

    Psalm 110:1 ESV
The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”
    reigning in power
    Psalm 110:2–3 ESV
The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies! Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.
    reigning from on high
    Philippians 2:9–11 ESV
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Do you know that today, Jesus is at God’s right hand, ruling and reigning over heaven and earth?
Compare this to how he was viewed in his day, and in our day
    In his day
    Despised, rejected
    Called a blasphemer
    Called a demon
    Called crazy
    Called an insurrectionist
    In our day
Viewed at best as a historical figure to be admired
At worst, viewed as an excuse for all kinds of evil behavior
Looking at things that people do “in his name” and throwing the baby out with the bathwater
Viewed as societally either “normal” or “insignificant”
    Relegated to Christmas and Easter
    Seen as dead
Not a baby, not hanging on a cross, not bones of a corpse in a tomb somewhere in Israel - rather, alive, ruling, forever.
    Psalm 110:2 ESV
The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies!
    Psalm 23:5 ESV
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
The Lord Jesus is present with us in the midst of his own enemies - ruling even in and through us.
    2 Corinthians 10:3–4 ESV
For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.

The Forever Priest - vs. 4

    Psalm 110:4 ESV
The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
    Mysterious figure in Genesis 14
We don’t know much about him
“King of Righteousness” is his name
    “King of Peace”
Becomes our righteousness, becomes our peace by his own blood on the cross.
    Hebrews 6:19–20 ESV
We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
    A sure and steadfast anchor.
I love the triple emphasis there, could have been just one.
    sure means dependable
    steadfast means immovable
anchor means a stronghold. They are synonyms in this case, but the scripture gives it to us in a triple emphasis.

The Forever Victor - vs. 5-7

One big way to look at this is in terms of the overarching theme of the Psalms, the two ways of life
The way of the righteous, vs. the way of the wicked.
    Revelation 3:21 ESV
The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.
In that sense, it is better to be with him on his throne than to be his footstool.
What does it mean to be God’s enemy, to take up the cause and fight against him?
Well, it is to fight against all that is good and right and beautiful, and to stand proudly on a false battlefield of one’s own idea of good and righteousness.
And that is the rub - to be against God, against Jesus, is to be against what is good. There is no way to deny Jesus and find what is best. You can’t have both.
When we view him as insignificant, as a baby, as a historical figure, as a dead man even, we can convince ourselves that we can deny him and still find good. But when we see him as the forever king, the king of righteousness and peace, then we cannot deny him and think we will find either righteousness or peace.
And to stand in his way is to stand in the wrong. The judgment is real - what is your refuge?
    What is your hope?
Is it a steadfast, sure, anchor of hope? If it’s not salvation in Jesus, then it isn’t.
