  • What does God say about fear?
    Psalm 56:11 ESV
in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me?
    Isaiah 41:10 ESV
fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
    Matthew 10:29–31 ESV
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
Both fear and failure come to meet their opposite in what the Lord calls us to in faith.
    Two aspects:
    Trust - believing
Living - Acting on it, following up.
Trust and Obedience are worked in us by God’s grace.
    Galatians 2:20 ESV
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

We are constantly reminded of fear and failure. The Light of God’s grace allows us to go from distress all the way to worship, and from despair all the way to thanksgiving.

    Psalm 118:1–4 ESV
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! Let Israel say, “His steadfast love endures forever.” Let the house of Aaron say, “His steadfast love endures forever.” Let those who fear the Lord say, “His steadfast love endures forever.”
    Broad - specific - general
    Why?
    His faithful love endures.

    Fear Surrounds

    Psalm 118:5 ESV
Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free.
The causes of fear and distress are very real.
The call is still to trust and faith.
    Psalm 118:6 ESV
The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?
More real than the very present trouble
    Psalm 46:1 ESV
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

    Failure Surfaces

Personal Failure (When we slip or sin)
    Psalm 118:13 ESV
I was pushed hard, so that I was falling, but the Lord helped me.
    Psalm 118:17–18 ESV
I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the Lord. The Lord has disciplined me severely, but he has not given me over to death.
Structural Failure (Things we trust in)
    Psalm 118:8–9 ESV
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.
    Psalm 20:7 ESV
Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
Wrong Turn that Started World War I
Serbian Nationalists were attempting to Assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austro-Hungarian Empire
A bomb thrown and bounced off his car
Their first attempt failed, and the archduke ordered a different return route be taken
Communication failed, and the driver turned down a side street that was on the original route. When ordered to back up, the car stalled - ironically enough - right in front of the assassins.
Assassin killed the Archduke and his Wife
Austro-Hungary blamed the Serbian government, and declared war.
Established Alliances came into play, and within weeks Europe was engulfed in what became World War 1.

    “Practically Unsinkable”
    Edmund Fitzgerald
    Routine Trip
    Weather Forecast changed
    “We are holding our own”
    Psalm 118:8–9 ESV
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.

    God is For Me

    Psalm 118:27 ESV
The Lord is God, and he has made his light to shine upon us. Bind the festal sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar!
That is the blessing - the benediction.
    Numbers 6:24–26 ESV
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
    Romans 8:31 ESV
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
    Psalm 118:14 ESV
The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.
The song of Moses after his deliverance.

    His Work is Wonderful

    Psalm 118:21–24 ESV
I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
    Ephesians 2:19–21 ESV
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.
    Psalm 118:28–29 ESV
You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you. Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!
