  • The Joy of Jesus

Two most joyful events in life. - Wedding -Childbith Both of those are analogies in scripture of joy. And we naturally jump to thinking of our joy, and that is the application we will make today. But where we want to begin this morning is by seeing the joy of Jesus. That is, the joy that belongs to Jesus - Jesus’ own joy.
Do you think of Jesus as joyful? Do you think of our Lord as with a smile on his face toward his children? Do you think of your Savior rejoicing? You should.

The Joy of Jesus is first His – He is a joyful Lord! And His joy given to those who look upon Him in faith.

    The Joy of Jesus

In His Kingship - Hebrews 1:8-9

    Hebrews 1:8–9 ESV
But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”
From Psalm 45. Most historians believe it was written for the occasion of a wedding of a king. It contains the themes of rejoicing in the provision of God, exulting over the beauty of the bride, and praising God for his eternal rule and reign.
Like all messianic Psalms, it had a real and true application then, yet had a full expected end and fulfillment in Jesus.
Just like the song the Hewitt’s sang, about King David pointing to a King forever. That is exactly what this Psalm points to, and the author of Hebrews shows us that clearly as he quotes it here.
This is, in essence, God the Father speaking to God the Son.
    Hebrews 1:9 ESV
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”
Oil of gladness beyond your companions.
    A supreme joy in Jesus.

For His Kingdom - Hebrews 12:1-2

    Hebrews 12:1–2 ESV
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
What is the joy set before Jesus?
The joy that is set before him is a people.
    Zephaniah 3:17 ESV
The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.
    Luke 15:5–7 ESV
And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
    John 6:37 ESV
All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.
    John 6:39–40 ESV
And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
    1 Peter 2:9 ESV
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
    Revelation 19:7–9 ESV
Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”

    Looking to Jesus

In His Kingship - John 16:19-24

    John 16:19–21 ESV
Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.
    John 16:22–24 ESV
So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
What is the fulness of joy tied to? The sovereign rule of Christ, as the victorious Lord - having gone away to death but returned victorious from the grave.
The fulness of joy is tied to the promise of provision, and that promise is real because Jesus is the King. He has the power, the authority, to provide everything that is needed.
There is an already/not yet aspect to this.
Already, because Christ is already Lord, he is already reigning, he is already the risen king. Already we can ask for what we need in His name in prayer.
Not yet, because for us, there is still the experience of the travail and the pain of this earth. Though I believe the immediate context of this passage is Jesus death and resurrection, there is something we are waiting for when all sorrow will be turned to joy.
    Romans 8:22–23 ESV
For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
    Psalm 97:1 ESV
The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad!

For His Kingdom - Isaiah 61:1-3

    Isaiah 61:1–2 ESV
    The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
    Isaiah 61:3 ESV
to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.
    Matthew 13:44 ESV
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
