  • God Values Redemption
Redemption is seen in many ways in scripture, but God’s redemption always has a theme
    There is a Problem
People are in trouble and can’t get out
People need to be set free
There is a way made out paved and paid for by the redeemer
    Deuteronomy 24:18 ESV
but you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this.
    Redemption in Ruth
    Ruth 3:13 ESV
Remain tonight, and in the morning, if he will redeem you, good; let him do it. But if he is not willing to redeem you, then, as the Lord lives, I will redeem you. Lie down until the morning.”
Redemption as a picture, as a sketch of the fulness of God’s redemption.

Though those needing redeemed can never pay the price, the Faithful Redeemer spares no cost of redemption.

The Court Case - vs. 1-4

    Ruth 4:1–2 ESV
Now Boaz had gone up to the gate and sat down there. And behold, the redeemer, of whom Boaz had spoken, came by. So Boaz said, “Turn aside, friend; sit down here.” And he turned aside and sat down. And he took ten men of the elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down.
    Ruth 4:2–4 ESV
And he took ten men of the elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down. Then he said to the redeemer, “Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, is selling the parcel of land that belonged to our relative Elimelech. So I thought I would tell you of it and say, ‘Buy it in the presence of those sitting here and in the presence of the elders of my people.’ If you will redeem it, redeem it. But if you will not, tell me, that I may know, for there is no one besides you to redeem it, and I come after you.” And he said, “I will redeem it.”

    The Verdict - vs. 6

    Ruth 4:6 ESV
Then the redeemer said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I impair my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption yourself, for I cannot redeem it.”
    “I Cannot Redeem It”
    Why?
    Jeopardy of his own estate
    Too Much Money
No children of his own, if Ruth bore one son by him, his entire estate would fall to that son and be in the name of Elimelech’s family instead
    Could have
Redeemed the field and refused to redeem ruth
Promised to redeem ruth but reneged after the transaction took place
Both would have jeopardized his own reputation
Seeing a way out, he took that option - Transferring it to Boaz

    The Outcome - vs. 7-10

    Ruth 4:7–8 ESV
Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging: to confirm a transaction, the one drew off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was the manner of attesting in Israel. So when the redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself,” he drew off his sandal.
    Ruth 4:9–10 ESV
Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and to Mahlon. Also Ruth the Moabite, the widow of Mahlon, I have bought to be my wife, to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brothers and from the gate of his native place. You are witnesses this day.”

    The Blessing - Vs. 11-12

    Ruth 4:11–12 ESV
Then all the people who were at the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman, who is coming into your house, like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you act worthily in Ephrathah and be renowned in Bethlehem, and may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring that the Lord will give you by this young woman.”
    Three parts
Like Rachel and Leah - plentiful offspring
    Act Worthily and be Renowned
    Like the House of Perez
A story of a Kinsman Redeemer who failed
A story of Redemption through unlikely means
The very line and ancestor of Boaz
This blessing points to some of the very themes in this book
God working our his plan providentially, sometimes despite the failures of his people.
God using and blessing the faithfulness of his people
God’s own faithfulness to redeem his own, and preserve his name.

    Our Redemption

    The Court Case
    The Law of God
    Have No Other Gods
    Do not commit Idolatry
Don’t Take the Lord’s Name in Vain
    Honor the Sabbath
    Honor your Father and Mother
    Do not Murder
    Do not Commit Adultery
    Do Not Lie
    Do Not Steal
    Do Not Covet
    Matthew 5:21–22 ESV
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
    Matthew 5:27–28 ESV
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
    The Verdict
    Romans 3:23 ESV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
    Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
    The Outcome
    Romans 5:8 ESV
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
    Romans 10:9–10 ESV
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
    The Ongoing Blessing
    Romans 5:1 ESV
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
    Romans 8:1 ESV
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Spurgeon on the Cost of Redemption
“If I had the power to do it, how would I seek to refresh in your souls a sense of this fact that you are "bought with a price." There in the midnight hour, amidst the olives of Gethsemane, kneels Immanuel the Son of God; he groans, he pleads in prayer, he wrestles; see the beady drops stand on his brow, drops of sweat, but not of such sweat as pours from men when they earn the bread of life, but the sweat of him who is procuring life itself for us. It is blood, it is crimson blood; great gouts of it are falling to the ground. O soul, thy Savior speaks to thee from out Gethsemane at this hour, and he says: "Here and thus I bought thee with a price." Come, stand and view him in the agony of the olive garden, and understand at what a cost he procured thy deliverance. Track him in all his path of shame and sorrow till you see him on the Pavement; mark how they bind his hands and fasten him to the whipping-post; see, they bring the scourges and the cruel Roman whips; they tear his flesh; the ploughers make deep furrows on his blessed body, and the blood gushes forth in streams, while rivulets from his temples, where the crown of thorns has pierced them, join to swell the purple stream. From beneath the scourges he speaks to you with accents soft and low, and he says, "My child, it is here and thus I bought thee with a price." But see him on the cross itself when the consummation of all has come; his hands and feet are fountains of blood, his soul is full of anguish even to heartbreak; and there, ere the soldier pierces with a spear his side, bowing down he whispers to thee and to me, "It was here and thus, I bought thee with a price." O by Gethsemane, by Gabbatha, by Golgotha, by every sacred name collected with the passion of our Lord, by sponge and vinegar, and nail and spear, and everything that helped the pang and increased the anguish of his death, I conjure you, my beloved brethren, to remember that ye were "bought with a price," and "are not your own."
