    God has ordained two offices within the church to be Servant-Leaders in Word and Deed

    1. The Tasks

    Of Overseers

    To Humbly Feed the Flock
    1 Peter 5:1–4 ESV
    So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
    To Provide Spiritual or Soul-Care and Oversight

    Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

    Deacon, as a term, is broad - but here it is evident in that Paul speaks of them “in the same way” as overseers, that there is an official capacity.
    The roles of deacon and overseer are intertwined, not that they are the same, but that one is dependent upon the other.
    Since Overseers are meant to lead and guide in all Spiritual, doctrinal, and biblical insight, the Deacons are those who serve the ongoing progress and outworking of those things.
    In essence, the roles of Elder/Overseer and Deacon are much like the way that biblical instruction comes to us - there is spiritual truth and wisdom, and that is played out in real life.
    Deacons, then, have the responsibility of attending to many of the real-life tangible things within the congregation. Whether it is making aware or addressing needs among the congregation, caring for the church assets, or being sure that the lights are on and the plumbing functions.
    Different churches approach the role differently, but the idea is the same. The Deacons serve alongside and in conjunction with the overseers/elders, and both allow the other to do their roles with as little distraction as possible.

    2. The Requirements

    Seven positive vs 3
    Husband of one wife - lit, a one-woman man. Pastoral leadership calls for integrity and faithfulness to marriage - to love as Christ loved the church.
    Above Reproach - Free of obvious marks against his character
    Respectable - modest. Not seen as indecent or crass.
    Hospitable - openness and receptivity to all kinds of people
    Able to Teach
    Four Negative
    Not Drunkard
    Not Violent
    Not Quarrelsome
    Not a Lover of Money
    In Real Life, Children, Maturity in Faith

    Of Deacons

    Overall, very similar. Only real exception is “able to teach”
    But that doesn’t allow for immaturity or lack of understanding in the faith, see vs. 9
    Vs 13
    Matthew 20:16 ESV
    So the last will be first, and the first last.”

    And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”
    Humble service is elevated in God’s Kingdom
    Humble service is a practical means of growth
    Assurance = abundant boldness
    As you serve and live faithfully, you are strengthened to continue serving and living faithfully.
