- I Love to Tell the Story
- As we saw Paul’s instructions to those who are wealthy in this present day and age, we asked first the question “what does it mean to be rich?”And here as we move to the last instructions in this letter, we can ask the same question.
1 Timothy 6:20 ESV O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,”“How Rich a Treasure We Possess in Jesus Christ our Lord”Ephesians 1:14 ESV who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.1 Peter 1:4 ESV to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,In Jesus Christ, our Lord His blood, our ransom and defense His glory, our reward The sum of all created things Is worthless in compare For our inheritance is Him Whose praise angels declare3. Guarding the DepositA. By Cherishing ItEntrusted - Stewardship1 Corinthians 4:1 ESV This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.steward - one who cares for a possession entrusted to them. Like a manager of an estate.A careful steward knows the value of what has been left in his care. This whole thing is really a parallel and buttress to what Paul had started the letter with.1 Timothy 1:11 ESV in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.Paul understood his ministry of the gospel to be a stewardship1 Timothy 1:12 ESV I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service,He directed his praise and attention to the one who entrusted him with it.1 Timothy 1:15 ESV The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. It was personal1 Timothy 1:16 ESV But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.It was valuable1 Timothy 1:18 ESV This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare,Timothy, it is yours too.B. By Attending To It1 Timothy 6:20 ESV O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,”“Avoid” - turn away from, deliberately stay away from it.Titus 3:10 ESV As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him,Romans 16:17 ESV I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.Avoid does not mean to be oblivious, it does not mean to be carefree, it means to be aware and careful. It means that not every controversy or question deserves addressing or answering. There are no stupid questionsHowever, there are irrelevant questionsThere are distracting questionsIrrelevantQuestions to hear their own voiceThere are harmful questions“Irreverent babble”“vain discussions”“puffed up with conceit and understands nothing”This protects fromwasting timedrawing attention to itgiving it more value than it hasC. By Believing It1 Timothy 6:21 ESV for by professing it some have swerved from the faith. Grace be with you.Not swerving, persevering - by grace.2 Timothy 1:12 ESV which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.I know not why God's wondrous grace To me He hath made known,Nor why, unworthy, Christ in love Redeemed me for His own.But I know Whom I have believèd, And am persuaded that He is ableTo keep that which I've committed Unto Him against that day. 1 Timothy 6:20NIV2011
