What Disciples Believe

- Like most Christians, disciples affirm: Jesus Christ is the son of the Living God, and offers saving grace to all. All persons are God's children.

Beliefs and Practices

- Open Communion: The Lord's Supper, or Communion, is celebrated in weekly worship and is open to all who believe in Jesus Christ.

- The Oneness of the Church: All Christians are called to be one in Christ and to seek opportunities for common witness and service.

-Freedom of Belief: As Disciples, we are called together around two essentials of faith: a belief in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, and that Christians are free to follow their conscience guided by Bible study, the Holy Spirit and prayer. We are expected to extend that freedom to others.

- Baptism by Immersion: Believer's baptism by immersion that is, a person makes the choice to follow God's call rather than the choice being made for them as an infant. Baptism is understood to be the basis of membership in the one universal Church and also a mark that every person is called to serve God. In baptism, the old self-centered life is set aside, and a new life of trust in God begins. Although Disciples practice baptism by immersion, other baptism traditions are honored.

- The Ministry of Believers: Both ministers and lay persons lead in worship, service and spiritual growth.

Core Disciple Values

- Studying and reading Scripture for ourselves. We critically and thoughtfully study scripture, taking into account the history and background - the context - in which it was written.

- Staying unified in covenant as a witness to the world so even when we disagree we can still make room, welcoming all to the table as Christ has welcomed us. Our spiritual ancestors noted, "unity, not uniformity."

- Answering God's call for justice particularly in the areas of care for the Earth, the challenges for women and children, poverty and hunger, and immigration. We seek to do this in cooperation with other people of faith.

- Partnering with other faith communities to work for bringing about wholeness - healing and justice - in the world.
