Genesis 3:20–24 KJV 1900 20 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. 21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them. 22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 23 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.In today’s message, we learn a new attribute of God.We have been studying about God the Creator, who created us in His image and likeness to rule His creation and to be blessed by this creation. However, today, we are going to learn that not only is God, Our Creator, but God is also our Savior.1 Timothy 1:1 KJV 1900 1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;Titus 1:3–4 KJV 1900 3 But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour; 4 To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour. In our text this morning we read the words of God’s grace, mercy, and peace obtained through death. However, this death was just a picture of what is pictured throughout the Old Testament in the sacrifices and fulfilled in the ultimate Sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary to show grace, extend mercy, so we can find peace with a Holy God. Today, we are talking about the fancy theological word, “Atonement”1 Timothy 4:10 KJV 1900 10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe. The phrase, “specially of those that believe”, show us that when it comes to salvation, there are 2 active participants in Salvation. There is God, who provides atonement and security. What do I mean be atonement and security.Atonement = doesn’t remove our sin, but rather covers our sin.Security = the ability to keep us covered even though we still sin until God can restore the image of His glory upon us through the reception of a glorified Body. The 2nd participant is the Individual.God has done His part, now we must respond. Our part is Faith and Hope.By faith, you must receive His Atonement or covering of your sin. That is achieved by trusting and obeying Him.By Hope, we must walk in faith with hope, believing that we will be clothed again with His glory.Even though these just don’t jump out of our text as being obvious, they are all there, in the words, screaming to be accepted. These verses this morning set the stage for the rest of the Bible that show us exactly how to transform the judgment of God into the Gospel of God.It involves what we are wearing, or better yet, if involves who we are wearing.Let’s being with our text this morning with man’s part, after sin has been experienced, revealed, accepted, and judged.Man’s Response of Faith:Genesis 3:20 KJV 1900 20 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. Why does Adam call Eve, the mother of all living. After all, God is still dealing with them and the command was that if they eat of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, they would surely die.At this particular time, Adam and Eve have no children or have had no children. They don’t come until the next chapter.Up to this time, she was simply named woman, because she was taken out of man, bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh. Now, Adam gives her a name and calls her Eve, which means life.By naming the woman, out of man, Eve, the mother of all living, Adam is showing Faith.Adam’s has faith thatHebrews 11:6 KJV 1900 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.Adam believed in the purpose of God, that man was to rule and through ruling, man would be blessed. The question, is how does this show faith. As I mentioned, Faith is no where mentioned in bold print but it is very obvious as we examine this passage. To see the Faith, we must go back in our passage to a promise that was initially made to Eve while God was speaking to Satan, the Serpent.Look back on Genesis 3:15.Genesis 3:15 KJV 1900 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.In this verse, often referred to in Latin as the Proto Evangelion, the first Gospel, mentions that Eve would have a child that would crush the head of Satan. At this statement, they immediately knew that Satan was a liar, a deceiver, and that God was actually Good and a rewarder of those that seek Him.Adam, by naming the woman, Eve, is showing his faith in God by naming her life, when she was promised death. Eve also shows faith by receiving the name. With this statement of faith, we see the act of repentance. When God came to them, they were hiding because of their nakedness, now they were accepting the promise of God.They were sorry for being deceived by Satan, for trusting Satan more than God.Even though, we do not have recorded here their confession, it is seen in the accepting of God’s promise that Eve would have a child and that child would destroy Satan. In order for Salvation to take place in a person’s life, there has to be a belief in God and His Word.John 3:16 KJV 1900 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. The reality of death coupled with the acceptance of the promises of God, by faith, becomes the hope of life.Everlasting life is Hope. However, here is the sad truth and reality of the matter, it does not matter how much faith you have or how much Hope you express if there is not an atonement for your sin. This is God’s Part of Salvation.God provides a covering, atonement.God’s Realization of Atonement:Genesis 3:21 KJV 1900 21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.If you remember, back inGenesis 2:25 KJV 1900 25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. They had no reason to be ashamed. There was no lust of the eyes, no lust of the flesh, no pride of life. There were no evil thoughts. There were no wicked intentions. There were no evil motives.Man and the Woman stood in the presence of God completely naked and were not ashamed. However, we come to chapter 3.Genesis 3:7 KJV 1900 7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. Now, man and woman see their nakedness and are ashamed.Sin brought guilt, shame, all kinds of feelings rushed into their soul. After sinning and experiencing the nakedness of sin, what is the first thing they try to do?They try to clothe their self. They tried to cover their own shame and nakedness. We can never clothe ourself. So, the next thing they did was try to hide from the presence of God.Genesis 3:8 KJV 1900 8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. So, back to our text,Genesis 3:21 KJV 1900 21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them. Now God offers to do what they could not do.That is to cover their nakedness. That is Atonement.Atonement is a covering for sinners, not a taking away of sins but a covering of their nakedness, that is provided by a sinless and innocent substitute.Where does skin come from?An animal and you cannot take an animals skin without killing the animal. The animal that provided their hyde for their covering was the first recorded death in the Bible.Remember, man was to eat of the trees and plants. Everything was vegetarians. That animal, and God does not tell us which one or the nature of this animal, but because and animal does not have a spirit, they cannot violate the law of God. Therefore, this animal was innocent.God chooses the animal.God kills the animal, His to kill.God takes the skin and covers Adam and Eve giving us the first picture of Atonement in the Bible. Therefore, An Atonement is a covering for sinners provided by the death of an innocent substitute.Jesus Christ is the substitute for mankind.Jesus Christ is the one according to Isaiah 53:5Why does God require death for sin? Because sin brings about death. But rather than kill Adam and Eve, who deserved death, who deserved instantaneous death, choose because of His nature to extend Grace, giving them what they don’t deserve, and give Mercy, withholding what they deserve. The death of that animal, satisfied God’s wrath, His judgment, and His justice.God’s Wrath was satisfied by the death of the substitute. So, the first element of salvation is introduced to us through Faith.Faith that God has provided a deliverer.Faith that God will provide one from the seed of woman who will crush the head of the serpent overcoming sin and bringing us back to paradise to enjoy the fruit and leaves of the tree of life.Again, Faith is pointless unless God has provided an atonement.Lastly,God’s Resolved our Security:Genesis 3:22 KJV 1900 22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:Divine initiative is taken to act graciously to the sinner … God knows that now the man has the knowledge of good and evil experientially. Not in the way that God knows it.It says here, “The Lord God said, ‘Behold the man has become as one of us …’ ”Well, not in the sense of knowing good and evil outside of oneself, as God knows it.God knows evil outside Himself. But in the sense of knowing good and evil inside. He knew what man did because he experienced it.God knows good and evil but man has experienced good and evil.We have a huge problem. What is the problem?Adam and Eve now who only knew good, now knows good and evil.Adam and Eve now through experience know good (listening to God) is better than evil (listening to Satan and self).Recognizing our nakedness is the first step to understanding our destiny with death. Is there anything that Adam and Eve could do to reverse this process on their own.Genesis 2:9 KJV 1900 9 And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. There were 2 trees in the garden, the tree of knowledge of good and evil that results in death and the tree of life. What if Adam and Eve run to the tree of life and eat the fruit.Look back at our text.Genesis 3:22–23 KJV 1900 22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 23 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.Notice what is at the end of verse 22.That is a colon. Verse 23 begins a new sentence. What is supposed to go at the end of a sentence? A period. Why is there a colon and not a period? The reason is because in the Hebrew, God does not finish the sentence. He just stops. He knows by the mentioning of the tree of life that Adam and Eve would immediately want to correct the situation. But before they could do that, God sends them out from the Garden and the presence of the Tree of life. Why is the mentioning of the tree a problem that required immediate removal of its presence? If Adam and Eve were to eat of the tree now that they were fallen, depraved, and wretched, they would live in this state forever. There would be no hope. This is exactly what we find in the place called hell that will be cast in the Lake of Fire. Eternal separation from God, no good but only evil torment where there will be weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth. What God was actually doing was protecting man for a hell that was prepared for a cursed Satan.Listen, when you believe in Jesus Christ, God covers you with a cloak of righteousness that does not remove your guilt and shame, but rather covers you guilt and shame awaiting the day when Christ returns and we receive our Glorified bodies and Christ will wipe away our tears of guilt, shame, pain, and sorrow. It is in the act of grace and mercy that we find the security of Salvation.Romans 8:31 KJV 1900 31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?John 10:28–29 KJV 1900 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.We do not have what it takes to save ourself and we sure do not have what it takes to secure our salvation.Salvation only happens because of God’s grace. Securing our salvation only happens by God’s grace. So, if we can’t save ourself and we can’t secure our salvation, then what do we need?We need atonement. We need our sins covered and we need security. We need a Savior and we need a Securer.Man’s Resilience in Hope:Genesis 3:23 KJV 1900 23 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.Adam and Eve lost paradise.Adam would sweat to eat.Eve would have multiplied pregnancies.Life would be hard.We will never acquire in this life what Adam and Eve lost.Adam, everytime he stuck a shovel in the ground to break it up would be reminded of his destiny because of sin. However, there is hope.Genesis 3:24 KJV 1900 24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.God secured Adam and Eve from returning to His presence and eating of the tree of life before woman’s seed had an opportunity to crush Satan and sin.We face and live each day in this hope.Hope purifies us1 John 3:3 KJV 1900 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.Hope becomes our anchor.Hebrews 6:19 KJV 1900 19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;Let me show you something and we will close.Salvation has 2 parts.Man’s is Faith and Hope that are accomplished in belief and confession.God’s part is atonement allows us in His presence because we are covered, and security sustains us.Revelation 2:1–4 KJV 1900 1 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; 2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: 3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name’s sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. 4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.Revelation 2:5 KJV 1900 5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.Revelation 2:7 KJV 1900 7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.SmyrnaRevelation 2:11 KJV 1900 11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.SardisRevelation 3:5 KJV 1900 5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.Romans 10:8–10 KJV 1900 8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.Have you accepted the atonement of Christ? Are you living in hope of the Return of Christ?Genesis 3:20–24KJV1900
