- Well, the holidays have begun. This week is Thanksgiving and Christmas is right on its heels. This week is a busy week. Many are cleaning their house for company, planning meals for the feast, and trying not to get ahead of ourself with the commercialism of the Christmas season. That’s right, Black Friday is this weekend. Cyber Monday is just a week away. Life is moving fast and furious. We have spent the last 3 months getting back to the basics of correcting and fixing our worldview. God is our creator. God created man and woman to rule this earth, to enjoy the blessings of God, while showing the image and likeness of the Godhead, The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. When we think about God, we have to think about giving. God gave us His creation to enjoy with all the senses that he placed within our body. The senses of sight, hearing, smelling, tasting, and feeling. But rather than accepting and listening to a good and giving God, Eve convinced Adam to listen to the devil, who only wants to take, kill, and destroy because they thought it would actually benefit and expedite their wisdom without God and the process of discovery and growth that God created.Through this failure on the part of man, sin was introduced into the world and past from generation unto generation.Because of sin, and the knowledge [experience] of sin this world is divided. Everything can either be for God’s glory or Satan’s delight.Everything meant for good and blessings now has the opportunity to become an evil and perversion.Because of sin, Thanksgiving can turned to selfishness and greed. Christmas can go from giving to taking, all because of whose voice we are going to listen to and which nature will we yield. In other words, you have a choice. This morning, I want us to get the holidays right this year. I want us to understand and behave as God would be pleased. This begins with the breaking the hold that sin has on us and embracing God’s greatest gift.Turn with me to Romans 5.As we seeThe Gift of Ruination
Romans 5:12–14 KJV 1900 12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.I am not going to go into this very much this morning because we have covered the background for this passage extensively the last several weeks.Sin Entered by Adam:Sin entered the human family by the actions of the first man Adam. He had been created in the very image of God. He had been placed in a perfect environment, with a perfect companion. He was the master of a perfect world. There was only one restriction on Adam. He was forbidden to eat the fruit of one tree in the Garden of Eden, Genesis 2:15–17. The penalty for eating from this tree was death! You would think that Adam would be content in that perfect paradise, but the Bible tells us that Adam broke the one Law that he had been given by God, Genesis 3:1–7.Sin Extended to All:The moment Adam sinned as been termed by theologians and “The Fall”. Sadly, Adam’s fall did not just affect Adam, but it affected the whole world! Note: “sin entered into the world.” There is no way to explain the world part from the fall! There is only one way to explain things like murder, abortion, theft, racism, hatred, fornication, adultery, idolatry, and all kinds of wickedness: “By one man sin entered into the world.”How do you explain a legal slaughterhouse where abortions are performed for profit? How do you explain homosexuality? How do you explain any of the millions of crimes that are committed against humanity? There is only one explanation: “By one man sin entered into the world.”Now, I want to jump ahead a little over 6,000 years to today.Romans 5:12 KJV 1900 12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:Sin Existed before Law:Romans 5:13–14 KJV 1900 13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.People do not become evil because they commit sin. People commit sin because they are evil by their very natures!Psalm 58:3 KJV 1900 3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: They go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies. You see, people became bad way back in the Garden of Eden. You were born with a bad record and with a lust for wrong. In fact, there is no sin that is beyond the realm of possibility for you. You say not me! Could you murder? If the circumstances were right! Could you commit adultery? Some of you have dreamed of it this very week! Could you steal? If necessary! Could you tell a lie? Certainly! The bottom line is that humans are evil to the core. There is no good in any of us. We are wicked beyond belief! And, that is the reality of sin!All sin and all the results of sin can be traced back to one moment in time. It can all be traced back to when Adam, the first man, sinned against God. Adam’s transgression was how paradise was ruined. However, look back at verse 14.Romans 5:14 KJV 1900 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. The Gift of ReclamationRomans 5:15 KJV 1900 15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. The Free Gift—Romans 5:15Romans 5:15 KJV 1900 15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. The free gift is something you can not earn. The Gift of Grace—Romans 5:15Romans 5:15 KJV 1900 15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.By grace = Given with unmerited favor. The Gift of Justification—Romans 5:16Romans 5:16 KJV 1900 16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.Adam’s sin brought condemnation; God’s gift brought justification.Justification is a Christian’s judicial acceptance by God as not guilty because his sins are not counted against him.Justification is a pronouncement of Acquittal.God’s gift differs entirely from what Adam did. Adam doomed the human race, but God’s gift justifies the human race. And note how glorious God’s justification is: when Adam sinned, his one sin was judged and it brought condemnation to men; but what God did is so glorious, it explodes the human mind.God’s gift justifies us from all our offenses, not only from Adam’s one offense.God’s gift justifies us from all the corruption we have inherited from our fathers and from all the corruption of human nature—all the sins we have committed with our own hands. The man who truly trusts Christ is justified from all things, from all sin, corruption, and condemnation … • inherited from our fathers (Adam) • committed and caused by our own sinful behaviorThe Gift of Righteousness—Romans 5:17Romans 5:17 KJV 1900 17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)Righteous = be put right.Critically, this righteousness is not about ethical perfection, but a forensic declaration—God pronounces an “eschatological verdict of acquittal” that truly makes the believer righteous. This righteousness is not something the individual possesses independently, but is granted through the “favorable verdict of the divine law court”Note two glorious truths.Believers “reign in life” while on this earth. They receive the abundance of God’s grace. There is the gift of abundant life.John 10:10 KJV 1900 10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. There is all sufficiency in all things.2 Corinthians 9:8 KJV 1900 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:There is great power.Ephesians 3:20 KJV 1900 20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,There is the supply of all needs.Philippians 4:19 KJV 1900 19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. There is an abundant entrance into heaven.2 Peter 1:11 KJV 1900 11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. There is abundant satisfaction.Psalm 36:8 KJV 1900 8 They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; And thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.Believers shall “reign in life” throughout all eternity.John 3:16 KJV 1900 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.John 5:24 KJV 1900 24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. The Gift of Eternal Life—Romans 6:23Romans 6:23 KJV 1900 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our LordBecause Adam gifted us with Ruination and Because God gifted us with Reclamation through Jesus Christ, then we’ll notice lastly.Romans 5:18–19 KJV 1900 18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Therefore, Word of Conclusion, Because we have been justified fundamentally by God’s act, and have been acquitted of our sins and made righteous, the free gift leads believers to “walk in the Spirit” and live faithfully, with saving faith ultimately producing faithfulness in life. The Gift ReiningRomans 5:20–21 KJV 1900 20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.Listen, because this is very good. The law was given to make sin OBVIOUS, but God’s Grace is more OUTSTANDING.Sin will reign to DEATH, but God’s Grace reigns unto ETERNAL LIFE.God’s Abounding Grace Only Happens Through the Righteousness of Jesus Christ.is Only Realized When Accepted from Jesus Christ.Have you Received God’s free Gift? Are you Thankful for God’s free gift? Are you Sharing God’s free gift? - The Savior Is Waiting
