- We Will Glorify
- We are studying the Revelation of Jesus Christ. He is the glorified and sovereign Lord and King.
Revelation 1:1–4 KJV 1900 1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: 2 Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. 3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand. 4 John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne; We tend to think of Jesus as the suffering one, the humble servant of the 4 gospels, the baby born in a manger, the miracle worker, the man of grace, the lover of children, the crucified and risen one. But when we come to Revelation, we see that Jesus is so much more.We have discovered that Jesus Christ isRevelation 1:5 KJV 1900 5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, the Faithful witness, the first begotten of the dead, the prince of kings of the earth.Jesus is the one that loved us, washed us from our sins with his own blood, andRevelation 1:6 KJV 1900 6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.made us king and priests unto God and his Father. He is to be glorified and given dominion of everything. We also discovered Jesus will returnRevelation 1:7 KJV 1900 7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.Clothed in the Shekinah Glory of God himself to the world Gazing with guilt for not recognizing or receiving Him the first time He came.We also saw Jesus asRevelation 1:8 KJV 1900 8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.the A - Z, as the Word of Life and the Father, the beginning and the ending, preexistent at creation and reigning for eternity, and which is, which was, and which is to come, the Almighty, the all powerful God himself, and we will discover so much more from His sovereignty, righteousness, glorification, and judgment.Studying the book of Revelation destroys any conceived idea or image that you may have created in your own mind to fit your lifestyle.Today, we are going to continue looking at Jesus Christ as the Sovereign Glorified Lord who is coming to mete out Holy justice and judgment. However with all this prestige, He is ever present as our encourager and comforter of His faithful people who suffer for His name.Today we will see Jesus through the worshipping, hearing and seeing, and responding scribe called John, the beloved Apostle.Revelation 1:9–11 KJV 1900 9 I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. 10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, 11 Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.A Consecrated Scribe:Consecration = dedication and devotion.Scribe is one that records only what he was given. John penned precisely what was spoken, never giving his opinion, but writing exactly the words of the Lord. His Humility:Brother: not an Apostle, not the Beloved of Jesus Christ, but one who is born into the family of God.Companion: “a joint partaker, a co-partner” Not someone special or unique but a laborer and a sufferer, with all those that serve God the Father through Jesus Christ. He is an authentic disciple of Jesus Christ and was very familiar with these 7 churches of Asia.John was a companionin tribulation = “pressure, compression fro evils, affliction, distress. In the kingdom = Not of this world but representing the Kingdom of God, the Kingdom of Heaven while on this earth.in patience of Jesus Christ = Patience leads to hope of faith, but we are patiently serving while patiently waiting for Jesus Christ to return. His Habitation: PatmosPatmos was a desolate volcanic island, very rocky and barren island, 25 miles in circumference located in the Aegean Sea southwest of Ephesus. The Island was approximately 10 miles long N to S and 6 miles wide at its broadest point. The highest point on the island was Mt. Elias, which rises more than 800 feet above the island. Why was John on the Isle of Patmos?According to the history of the early church fathers such as Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, and Eusebius, all state that John was sent to this island as an exile under the ruler Domitian.Domitian was the first emperor to wage a proper campaign against Christ and Christians.Paul and Peter have already been destroyed by Nero were actually seen as Jews.Jerusalem had been destroyed by Titus in AD 70.Domitian realized that John was the earthly force behind Christianity during this time. Therefore, he declared war on John and the church which he eventually lost. Why was this hatred so strong? The Sermon Notebook: New Testament I, John (Revelation 1:9–11, 19)• They were hated for
Because of these reasons, according to Tertullian around 200 AD, Domitian ordered John the Apostle to be boiled in a vat of oil in Rome. The incident allegedly occurred near the Latin Gate during a persecution of Christians, but John emerged unharmed and was subsequently exiled to Patmos.Tertullian says: “The apostle John was banished to the island” (On the Prescription of Heretics, 36). ⇒ Origen says: ‘The Roman Emperor, as tradition tells us, condemned John to the island of Patmos for witnessing to the word of truth’ (Homilies on Matthew). ⇒ Clement of Alexandria tells us: “On the death of the tyrant John returned to Ephesus from the island of Patmos” (The Rich Man’s Salvation, 42). ⇒ Jerome says that John was banished in the fourteenth year after Nero and liberated on the death of Domitian (Concerning Illustrious Men, 9).Ultimately, this hatred wasBecause of What John Preached: “for the Word of God”Instead of preaching a message that was pleasing to the Romans, John preached the truth. He condemned sin and he preached the Gospel. Both of these things brought the fury of Rome down upon him.Because of Who John Preached: “for the testimony of Jesus Christ”The real thorn in their flesh was John’s insistence that Jesus Christ was the Son of God. He preached Jesus crucified and risen from the dead. John preached Jesus as the only way to salvation. He condemned the Roman gods, the Roman way of life, the Roman rulers and Roman society. He pointed men to Jesus and he was hated for it!Even though it is hard to understand the full concept of suffering for Christ at great cost, it is fully understood in other countries.Revelation 1:10 KJV 1900 10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,His Hypnotizing:Even on a barren island, when John couldn’t worship Jesus Christ with the church on the Lord’s Day, the first day of the week, Sunday. The Lord’s Day is the day that Christ rose from the dead.Jesus came to John.“in the spirit” - Jesus put him in a trance, that gave John a deep spiritual experience that lifted his mind and spirit to the very presence of Jesus Christ.“he heard a great voice” - a voice that got his attention. a voice of authority, the voice of Christ.“as of a trumpet” - It wasn’t a trumpet but the sound of a trumpet. Trumpets were used to announce and introduce festive occasions. Trumpets meant authority, an overpowering and commanding voice. It was a sound that got John’s instant attention. His Hearing:Revelation 1:11 KJV 1900 11 Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea. The Call of Jesus:Again, the term Alpha and Omega. The complete alphabet. The Word of God.The first and the last = The beginning from creation to the end of reigning. Gen1:1 - Rev 21:22.The Command to Write:Why Write it Down? So it can be read, shared, and studied and not be added to or taken away from as happens most of the time with verbal transmission. The Command to Send:This message was not for John alone, but was for the Church to be taught in the church for her edification and building up of their faith while they are patiently waiting while suffering at the hand of the world.Remember:Revelation 1:3 KJV 1900 3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand. The 7 churches that were also suffering major persecution that John was to deliver this book was Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. We will discuss these individually as we cover their specific letters in Chapters 2 and 3, but let me remind you again and I will again later, these churches are real literal churches. It is hard to send a letter or book to an age or time period. These churches had addresses. However, these churches also represent the church as a whole for all times which makes it also important for us today. Not only was John Consecrated as a Scribe, but he becameA Confounded Servant:Revelation 1:12–16 KJV 1900 12 And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; 13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. 14 His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; 15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. 16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.John heard in vs. 10 but now John sees.Seven Golden Candlesticks:Now, so we aren’t confused, Jesus defines these for us inRevelation 1:20 KJV 1900 20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.Gold represents the precious, pure nature of the church. There is no institution on the earth as precious and as beautiful as the church!Remember, the church was purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ.Seven = again is the number of completeness or perfection. These lampstands stand for 7 real and particular churches but represent all local churches down through the age.Candlestick = portable oil lamp which elevates the light. The Jews called them “menorah”. The menorah had seven branches and was used in the Tabernacle. The church is to be the light of the World.Matthew 5:14 KJV 1900 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.John 8:12 KJV 1900 12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.We are not lights, there is only one light. However, the candlestick was filled with oil in which was placed a wick that was lit to produce the light. The Holy Spirit was given to the church as the empowerment of the witness of Jesus Christ, as oil. we are the candlestick, Jesus is and will always be the light.John 9:5 KJV 1900 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. However, according to Phil 2:15Philippians 2:15 KJV 1900 15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; How do we shine?Ephesians 5:18 KJV 1900 18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;Anytime we gather as a church, Jesus is in the midst. Matt 18:20Matthew 18:20 KJV 1900 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.No matter what we are suffering or going through, Jesus is always in the midst of the Candlestick and we are to lift Him up to the world. The Son of Man:His Clothing:Revelation 1:13 KJV 1900 13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. The garment of a Prophet, King, and a Priest. As Prophet, Jesus proclaims the Word of God, as the faithful witness. As King, Jesus is Sovereign Lord. Jesus is in control and ruling. He is sovereign over the church and the world. As Priest, Jesus is “in our midst”. Jesus is our Intercessor; the mediator between us and God, the one who prays for us in Heaven day by day.Hebrews 7:25 KJV 1900 25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.Romans 8:34 KJV 1900 34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.When we see Him, we will see Him as John sees Him, as Prophet, King and Priest. His Head and Hair:Revelation 1:14 KJV 1900 14 His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;White = wool is the wisdom of age, it takes time to grow wool. as snow speaks of purity, sinlessRemember, He is the first and last, ageless and eternal. His Eyes:Eyes as a flame of fire = speak of the piercing, penetrating power. He sees everywhere, even the deepest secret of every heart. His Feet:Revelation 1:15 KJV 1900 15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.Fine brass speaks of strength and perseverance. His feet are shod with the gospel of peace, bringing salvation to all, but they are also the feet that shall tread down His enemies. His Voice:His voice as the sound of many waters = voice of authority.Jesus shouts the glorious message of salvation, hope, joy, confidence, and comfort, but it also thunders forth majestic rebuke, conviction, and judgment. Nothing or noone can stand against the force of His Word! His Right Hand:Revelation 1:16 KJV 1900 16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.Seven Stars = according to verse 20, are the 7 angels of the of the seven churches. An angel is a messenger, a minister of the churches. His hand securely holds the messengers with skill and strength and comfort. The right hand is a hand of honor. His Mouth:out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword = The Word of God.Hebrews 4:12 KJV 1900 12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. His Countenance:His countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength = The brilliance of His presence in all of His majesty, honor, and shekinah glory of God.Not only have we seen a Consecrated Scribe and a Confounded Servant who just saw the risen, glorified Christ, but in closing, I want to noticeA Comforted Saint:Revelation 1:17–20 KJV 1900 17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: 18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. 19 Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter; 20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches. What would be your reaction if you saw Jesus as John saw Him?You have! You have heard about Jesus from Jesus, Hopefully you have turned you heart and mind toward Him this morning. We have seen a very vivid picture of Jesus Christ from the Word of God.How did John react? How are you reacting?Notice the first sign of seeing Jesus isShattered Saint:This morning, you will respond one of 2 ways. You will either ignore Him and shut Him out of your life, or you will confess Him as Lord through broken humility that it is not about you. When we come up against the holiness of God, we become even more aware of our sinfulness and pride.God cannot use someone that is not broken for His kingdom or in His kingdom.Matthew 5:3–4 KJV 1900 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.Stirred Saint:Revelation 1:17 KJV 1900 17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:The hand that holds the angels the messengers of the churches suffering tremendous persecution. A hand of support, comfort, and peace, touched John with love and compassion.Stimulated Saint:Revelation 1:17–18 KJV 1900 17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: 18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.Fear not = I am coming to you in love and care not judgement. If you believe in Jesus now, you will never face condemnation and judgment, However if you reject Him now, you will face His condemnation and judgment.I am the first and the last =First because all things are from me; last, because all things are to me from the beginning to the end.First because I am the cause of origin; last, because I am the judge and the end.I am he that liveth and was dead = John you know me.I came, John! You walked with me.I died, John! You saw me, my lifeless body.I arose, John! We met together. You watched me ascend to the Father.I am alive for evermore = My resurrection is what secured your salvation. I love you. You are mine, I am yours. You are my beloved disciple!”I have the keys of hell and of death = I am the One who reigns and judges!I have conquered death, the penalty of sin, by accepting and following me, you can be delivered from the bondage of hell and death. There is no hope for those who reject Him.Death to the believer is to be with Jesus.Death to the unbeliever is eternal condemnation.Sanctioned Saint:Revelation 1:19 KJV 1900 19 Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;Write and Proclaim the Truth! Only what comes from Jesus; the way, the truth, and the life.Given a Summary:The Things which Thou hast Seen: Rev. 1 - The vision of the Glorified Christ. The Things which Are: Rev. 2-3 - The state and condition of the churches of his time. The Things Which Shall Be Hereafter: Rev. 4-22 - the consummation of human history, the coming again of the Lord Jesus Christ and the end of the world.Given the Symbols:Revelation 1:20 KJV 1900 20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.John heard Jesus!John turned to the Voice of Jesus!John saw Jesus!John responded to Jesus and Jesus responded to John. What will you do with Jesus?
