  • Revelation 12:1–2 KJV 1900
1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: 2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
    The Woman = Israel
The man child in her womb = Jesus Christ
    Revelation 12:3 KJV 1900
3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
The Great Red Dragon = Satan.
Revelation itself identifies the dragon as Satan: “the great dragon…that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan” (Revelation 12:9). The heads, horns, and crowns picture his authority and the rulers or kingdoms through which he works.
    Seven heads: Revelation 17:9–10
    Revelation 17:9–10 KJV 1900
9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. 10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
says the heads are seven mountains and also seven kings. The passage does not name those kings, so their precise historical identification is debated. The seven heads appear on both the dragon and the beast (Revelation 12:3; 13:1), linking Satan’s power with the beast’s rule.
Ten horns: Revelation 17:12 explicitly interprets the horns as ten kings who receive authority with the beast.
    Revelation 17:12 KJV 1900
12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.
Daniel 7:7, 24 also uses horns for kings or kingdoms, supporting that symbolism.
    Daniel 7:7 KJV 1900
7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.
    Daniel 7:24 KJV 1900
24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.
Seven crowns: Revelation 12:3 places the crowns on the dragon’s heads, portraying royal authority or rule. The passage does not separately explain the number or placement of the crowns.
In Revelation 13:1, the related beast has ten crowns on its horns,
    Revelation 13:1 KJV 1900
1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
while Revelation 17:12 identifies those horns as kings.
So, symbolism is not real hard or scary if you just read and apply your Bible.
    Remember our blessing of Revelation.
    Revelation 1:3 KJV 1900
3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.
    Revelation 12:4 KJV 1900
4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
The third part of the stars are the angels that defected with him.
    Revelation 12:5 KJV 1900
5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
Jesus when He came the first time was not destroyed but willingly gave His life on the cross for our sins defeating sin, death, and the grave.
In Acts 1:8, he ascended to His father, God, where
    Romans 8:34 KJV 1900
34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
    Revelation 12:6 KJV 1900
6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
Now, we are caught up to the middle of the Tribulation Period where the Antichrist has blasphemed God and desecrated the Temple as Daniel has spoken in Daniel 9:27
    Daniel 9:27 KJV 1900
27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
Jesus warned of this in Matthew 24:15-20
    Matthew 24:15–20 KJV 1900
15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) 16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: 17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: 18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. 19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! 20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:
1,260 days again is the equivalent that we have seen over and over of the 42 months and 3 1/2 years. We are now in the middle of the 7 year period and we have 3 1/2 years left
We see Israel, once again taken to the Wilderness. A place destitute of natural resources, and a place of isolation.
However, God will still not forsake them, even though they have forsaken Him. He will provide for her and feed her.
This brings us to our text this morning.
    Revelation 12:7–8 KJV 1900
7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
It is hard for us to image a war in heaven. However, this is described in Ezekiel 28.
    Ezekiel 28:16–17 KJV 1900
16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. 17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
    Therefore, there is a

    Great Struggle in Heaven:

The presence of Satan in heaven is a reality. A war between the hosts of good and evil under their respective leaders. Remember, this event coincides with the blowing of the 7th trumpet that we will see be concluded in Rev 19.
At this point, the focus zooms in on Israel and brings her to the forefront of God’s plans.
Understand something this morning, Satan will never voluntarily withdraw from heaven. He will have to be thrown out and it will take a war in order for that to happen.

    The Roles in the Struggle:

We are now introduced to the 4th Character or main personality of last 3 1/2 years of tribulation.

    Michael, the Archangel.

    Who is Michael?
The Hebrew word means “who is like unto God.”
He is named 5 times in the Bible.
3 times in the book of Daniel.
Once in Jude 9 and here in Rev 12:7.
He seems to be the leader of the angelic hierarchy by the term used in Jude 9
    Jude 9 KJV 1900
9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
    and also in Daniel 10:13
    Daniel 10:13 KJV 1900
13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.
He is always mentioned in relation to Israel at this moment we are at this morning.
    Daniel 12:1 KJV 1900
1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.
He is a militant angel fighting against the evil forces producing a behind the scenes battle of all the ages.
    Ephesians 6:11 KJV 1900
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
    Ephesians 6:12 KJV 1900
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
The invisible struggle between the powers of light and teh forces of darkness are real and earnest, and by these spiritual beings the world is providentially governed.

    Satan, the Loser:

    Revelation 12:7 KJV 1900
7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
    Revelation 12:8 KJV 1900
8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
We are not told how great of a battle, how long of battle, or the resistance offered in the battle. However we are told that it came to sudden end including the banishment of Satan and his angels from heaven.
Jesus describes it in Luke 10:18
    Luke 10:18 KJV 1900
18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
This signifies the instantaneous nature of the end of the battle.
    Revelation 12:9 KJV 1900
9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Never again will Satan be allowed in Heaven.
It is also good to note the three names given to him going all the way back to Genesis 3, describing his different names but the same rebellious angel.
    Devil = Slander
    Satan = Adversary
As the accuser of the brethren, the old Serpent is in opposition to Christ as priest, mediator between man and God.
As the accuser who brings forth the First beast, the Antichrist, the Devil is opposed to Christ as king, ruler and owner of this earth.
Thirdly, as the accuser that brings forth the Second beast, Satan is opposed to Christ as prophet, messenger from God to man.

    A Loud Voice

    Revelation 12:10 KJV 1900
10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
Salvation is not deliverance from the guilt of sin, that was taken care of at the first coming and the death and resurrection of Christ.
Salvation here is deliverance from the evil of Satan and the completion of God’s program.
God is about to flex His muscles in strength.
The Kingdom of God is about to be brought to earth.
Satan’s current responsibility and ministry of appearing before the throne of God “day and night” accusing the saints of sin and weakness will be overpowered by Christ.
Particularly, This will be accomplished by the blood of Christ.
    Revelation 12:11 KJV 1900
11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
How do we overcome the accusation of Satan?
The Blood of the Lamb - the power of the blood is sufficient for our sins.
The Word of Testimony - assures us of our acceptance and forgiveness, which is the “Sword of the Spirit.”
“loved not their lives unto the death” Surrender and Obedience - loving Jesus more than loving life is proof enough of our allegiance to God.

    The Response of the Struggle:

    Revelation 12:12 KJV 1900
12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

    Rejoicing in Heaven:

    The Jubilant acts of worship.
Folks, you should be getting excited. Satan will be defeated, Satan is defeated. Just 3 1/2 years and then he will be locked up in hell awaiting his final destination in the bottomless pit.
If this doesn’t make you rejoice, then you probably shouldn’t even be here this morning.
However, while the heaven is rejoicing a different reaction is happening on earth.

    Regret on Earth:

    Revelation 12:12 KJV 1900
12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
Judgement is now coming in full force to the earth and the sea.
Satan, knowing his doom is sealed, his time is short, will take out all of his furious anger on the woman, Israel, during the second half of the Tribulation.
Great wrath means a strong passion or emotion rather than a rational state of mind.
    Satan will lose His temper.

    Great Storm on Earth:

    Satan Persecutes the Woman:

    Revelation 12:13 KJV 1900
13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.
This persecution corresponds to the blowing of the 7th trumpet we saw in Rev 11.
We also know that the Antichrist will break the treaty with Israel and desecrate the temple.
    Jesus warned in Matt 24:16
    Matthew 24:16 KJV 1900
16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
The war is now in full force. Satan will have unrestricted freedom on the earth for 3 1/2 years.

    God Protects the Woman:

    Revelation 12:14 KJV 1900
14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
Unlike Eve in the garden who was tempted, the woman, Israel will be persecuted.
However, unlike Eve who considered the words of Satan the woman, Israel will flee from the presence of the Serpent.
Ejected from the garden, Eve birthed her first son passing a sinful nature and death to everyone.
In the Great Tribulation, the woman, Israel, will be protected in the wilderness because of the covenant and birthing of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who removed the curse of sin and death up all.
Where Cain was cursed from the earth as she refused to produce of her bounty for him, the descendants of the woman, Israel, will be fed in the wilderness.
Let me take just a second as we wrap up this message to say that some people believe the eagle is the United States of America whose symbol is an eagle. America, a lifelong ally of Isreal, will swoop in providing a massive airlift to safety. However, I do not believe or accept this interpretation. Let me give you a quick reason why?
After bringing Israel out of Egyptian bondage, God mentioned
    Exodus 19:4 KJV 1900
4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.
    Again, Deut 32:11-12
God uses the eagle protection of her young as an example of what he will do for Israel.
    Deuteronomy 32:11–12 KJV 1900
11 As an eagle stirreth up her nest, Fluttereth over her young, Spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, Beareth them on her wings: 12 So the Lord alone did lead him, And there was no strange god with him.
God didn’t use the United States in this situation and God will not need her help on this occasion.
God is simply referring to the faithfulness in caring for Israel.
God will provide and protect her just like he provided and protected her in the wilderness for 40 years before going into the promise land.

    The Serpents Warfare:

Again, John turns from the use of the devil and Satan to the term serpent illustrating his influence as direction and control both morally and politically.
    Revelation 12:15 KJV 1900
15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.
    Revelation 12:16 KJV 1900
16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
To understand what God is doing in these verse, you need to go back to Joshua 3-4 where God through Joshua and the presence of the ark of the covenant God delivers Israel.
    Joshua 3:7 KJV 1900
7 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.
    Joshua 3:10–11 KJV 1900
10 And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites. 11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passeth over before you into Jordan.
    Joshua 3:15–17 KJV 1900
15 And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,) 16 That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho. 17 And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.
    Isai 59:19-20 makes this prophecy.
    Isaiah 59:19–20 KJV 1900
19 So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, And his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, The Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him. 20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, And unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord.
Verse 19 we have the event this morning. Verse 20 we have the 2nd Coming of Jesus Christ.
The flood therefore is an attempt by Satan to exterminate the nation but the earth gives natural difficulty in the execution of his program.
God will not sit idly by, for His children are the apple of His eye. He will not let the enemy destroy them.
God will use both natural and supernatural means to circumvent Satan and bring His people to safety.
Just like Numbers 16 with the earth swallowed up Korah and those serving Satan by rebelling against the known will of God, the earth will swallow up the anti-Semetic armies of the Antichrist.
    Revelation 12:17 KJV 1900
17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
The wrath of Satan continues to be vented towards, God’s people, the remnant, those 144,000 sealed from the 12 tribes of Israel. The sealed are saved spiritually, and sealed physically and therefore preserved throughout the tribulation.
    2 Qualities are mentioned:
Keeping the Word of God. This is an inward commitment.
The Testimony of Jesus Christ. This is an outward expression your faith in the Word of God.
Let me close out by encouraging you just a little this morning.
Antisemitism is not going to improve. Lawlessness and opposition to God will continue to grow. However, we can be victorious. We can live victorious even now.
James the half brother of Jesus Christ said this
    James 4:7–8 KJV 1900
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Submitting is your inward faith and commitment to God
Resisting the devil: by outwardly living your faith and commitment for God.
