“For that glorious summary of Christian doctrine contained in our noble Standards. It has cheered my soul in many a dark hour, and sustained me in many a desponding moment.”- J. H. Thornwell.
About;
In a day and a time when beliefs are fluid and ever changing; in a day and a time when all people are called to coexist, how is a Christian’s faith unique? Who is God? How can we know about him? Why is the Bible so important? Is God in control? Is man good? What is the gospel? Does man have free will? Can we be assured of our salvation?
During the 16th Century a document was written called the Westminster Standards. These documents (Revised periodically) have been used to summarize the doctrine of many Denominations including the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Doctrine and Worship go hand in hand; Your understanding of God shapes how or why you worship Him. In the opinion of theologian and pastor, B.B. Warfield, the Westminster divines left to posterity not only the most thoroughly thought out statement ever penned of the elements of evangelical religion but also one which breathes the finest fragrance of spiritual religion. Their most influential work, The Shorter Catechism, though more than 350 year old, is undoubtedly still one of the best introductions to the key doctrines of the Christian faith. Warfield says, “We can ourselves testify from experience to the power of the Westminster Confession to quicken religious emotion and to form and guide a deeply devotional life”.
