FROM WORSHIP COMMITTEE:

  • Our hymnal discussion is on hold for now, as much of our feedback showed little need for hymnbooks in the pews at all in light of our new projector capabilities. As always, we welcome your input on worship music and other parts of the service.
  • We have a selection of old Hymns for the Family of God books pulled from the pews due to their dilapidated condition. These are in the front pew, organ side, FREE to anyone who would like one. The leftovers will be donated.

FREE BOOKS: To make room on our shelves, we are giving away some of our older books that are on a specially marked table in the library. Take as many as you want! Also, the HFG songbooks under the table are free.

Genesis 9.18-29 | Attempts at New Beginnings

Introduction

- Story of Dave Yuk

- Big idea: This passage is about starting life all over again

1. Our attempts at new beginnings

- Noah and his family try to practice God’s commands

- How we try to start all over again

- Story of Molly Bloom illustrates how we try to begin again: hard work, determination, look to the self

2. Our attempts at new beginnings often fail

- Noah and his family fail all the commands God previously gave them in chapter 9: stewardship of creation, sanctity of human life, filling the earth for God’s glory.

- Our attempts can fail. David Yuk failed.

- One big reason why our attempts fail: we try to change through moralistic behavior change. This is the “try harder” version of Christianity.

3. The Gospel of Jesus Christ gives us new beginnings

- Shem and Japheth cover Noah, which points to something only God can do

- Another detail in the text that shows us that we are covered

- The way to make a new beginning is to know about and experience the covering we have in Christ. Titus 2.11-12.

- How the gospel changes us

- David Yuk finally has Gospel transformation.
