Genesis 10 | The Table of Nations

Introduction

- We value our family heritage and origins

- Big idea: Genesis 10 is about the origin of nations and shows us three things about who we are

1. We are all from Noah

- From Noah the entire earth gets populated. Acts 17.26

- We are all of the same blood

- We must work hard to eradicate any hint of racism

2. We are a light in the heart of the darkness

- God wants to save the nations. It doesn’t seem that way based on how God treats Shem

- God is narrowing his work of salvation in order to broaden it

- This shows us what is on God’s heart. Are the nations on our heart? God placed Shem in the heart of darkness to be a light. How can you be a light?

3. We have a worth and life purpose that is not tied to fame and wealth.

- Nimrod thinks ultimate blessings are power and fame

- Canaan seems to believe ultimate blessings are in the wealth of a land

- Yet none of those earthly blessings compare to heavenly blessings. The real blessings are found in the line of Shem. For us, that means being “in Christ.”

- It’s tempting to equate material wealth with heavenly blessings

- This passage challenges us to value what truly matters and seek what truly matters
