Notice from the Virginia Dept. of Health
This is an update from the Virginia Department of Health about the status of COVID-19 vaccinations in Virginia. The available supply of vaccine is still very limited around the country, and we know the wait has been frustrating.
The good news is that state and local public health officials and many partners have been working tirelessly to get vaccines to as many people as possible, as quickly as possible:
- More than 1.4 million doses have already been administered by Virginia, including nearly 95% of the first doses available to the state. You can track Virginia's progress on the Vaccine Dashboards.
- Virginia ranks 12th among all states for percent of the population that has received at least one dose, and 9th among all states for percent of available doses administered, according to CDC data presented by the New York Times.
Today, we launched a new statewide vaccine pre-registration system, to make it easier for people to sign up for a free COVID-19 vaccination. If you are receiving this email, you have been transferred automatically to the new statewide system and you do not need to do anything at this time. You will maintain your current status, and can confirm that you are in the new system at any time, at vaccinate.virginia.gov.
The country still needs more vaccine supply to be able to get shots in the arms of everyone who wants them. Unfortunately, it may take weeks or months before everyone currently on waitlists is able to make an appointment. Although the complexities of vaccine distribution do not make it possible to give an estimated appointment date, we will send you regular reminders that you are still on the pre-registration list.
When your appointment becomes available, there will be no charge. State and local agencies will never call, email or text you to ask for your social security number or immigration status in connection with vaccination. For additional information, including frequently asked questions and details about vaccine eligibility, visit www.vdh.virginia.gov/covid-19-vaccine/ or https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines.
This service is provided to you at no charge by the Virginia Department of Health.

For 80 years, a couple in Ecuador was an exceptional example of marital love. Julio Cesar Mora Tapia, 110, and Waldramina Maclovia Quinteros Reyes, 104, were wed on February 7, 1941. Until Julio’s death last October, they were reportedly the world’s oldest married couple. Their large family includes nine great-great-grandchildren!
Good News Network recounts: “Julio Cesar fell in love with Waldramina’s beauty, her conversation, and her big heart.” Meanwhile, she found in him “a poet with a young spirit.” The couple says the formula for a lasting marriage is “love + maturity + mutual respect,” as well as patience, compassion and hard work.
That calls to mind Paul’s words, often read at weddings: “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth” (1 Corinthians 13:4-6, ESV).

CHILDREN'S CLOTHING NEEDED
The picture above is of BUMC Youth doing volunteer work at Mission Central.
In 2020, the Children's Clothes Closet served 1,829 children and 963 families. Those are incredible numbers when you consider what 2020 was like! Their volunteers tried their best to meet the needs of the community despite the restrictions in place with the COVID-19 virus. They work with Social Service to bag up clothing for families in need and arrange pick up of the items. They have had specific dates where diapers could be picked up in a drive through type of style. They also began reopening the closet a few times a month with a limited number of people in at a time. These dedicated volunteers are still at work and they reopened this past Wednesday and Thursday (1/13 & 1/14). The needs in our area are great and your support is always welcome.
What can you do to help?
- They are always in need of volunteers so if you would like to volunteer please call Phyllis Foltz at 289-5045. They need volunteers to sort and tag clothes when the closet is closed and they also need volunteers to help when the closet is open.
They are always in need of new children's socks and underwear. Sizes 2T to 16 (boys and girls). There are two large, pink baskets in the hallway across from the church library where you can drop off your donations. If you do not feel comfortable going shopping for these items, but would like to donate, please get in touch with me and I would be happy to shop for you.
- There is also a red box in the stairway going downstairs to the SS rooms if you have any other children's clothes, shoes and coats that you would like to donate.
- Monetary donations are always helpful to be used for purchasing diapers and other items that are needed. If you would like to make a donation to the Children's Clothes Closet, please write your check to BUMC and put Children's Clothes Closet in the memo line.
- Pray for the volunteers who serve and for the families who visit the Closet. Let them feel God's love alive and at work.
Thank you for your continued support of this vital ministry outreach in our area.
