I. God Kept the Dream From the King – Daniel 2:1–3
A. The Time of the Dream
Steveson, Daniel – The Babylonians dated regnal years from the first full year of rule while the Jews dated it from the first fraction of a year. From archaeology, we know that Nebuchadnezzar became king in the fall of the year. The last two tablets of Nabopolassar Nebuchadnezzar’s father, are dated May and August 605 BC. The first two tablets of Nebuchadnezzar have dates placing them in August and September of 605 BC. The Babylonians would have counted his regnal years from 604 BC, the first full year of his rule. The Jews would have considered his reign as starting in 605 BC. If chapter 2 follows the Babylonian practice by referring to the second full year of Nebuchadnezzar’s reign, this event takes place toward the end of Daniel’s training or, possibly, shortly after its completion. (Peter A. Steveson, Daniel (Bob Jones University Press, 2008), 18)
B. The Importance of the Dream
troubled = distressed, afflicted, in danger
magician = a sorcerer; a person who uses or claims to use magical spells to harness evil forces or spirits in order to produce unnatural effects in the world. (Brannan, Lexham Research Lexicon of the Hebrew Bible)
astrologers = enchanters, conjurers of spirits, necromancers [one who inquires of the dead], or astrologers…It is found only in the book of Daniel in relation to wise men or diviners (Dan. 2:2; 5:11). (Baker and Carpenter, The Complete Word Study Dictionary: Old Testament, 107)
sorcerer = engage in witchcraft, be a sorcerer, i.e., to practice the black magic arts (Swanson, Dictionary of Biblical Languages with Semantic Domains: Hebrew (Old Testament)
Chaldean = astrologers, magicians
