Sermon Notes

Remember Jesus #17                                                  January 9, 2021

  I. Extreme Thirst – Matthew 27:45–49; John 19:28

 II. A Victorious Finish – John 19:30

it is finished = One Greek word, “tetelestai”, meaning "It is finished, it stands finished, and it always will be finished!" (Warren Wiersbe, Bible Exposition Commentary – Be Transformed (John 13-21), (Colorado Springs, CO: Victor, 2003), WORDsearch CROSS e-book, 384.)

Receipts for taxes have been recovered with the word tetelestai written across them, meaning “paid in full.” This word on Jesus’ lips was significant. When He said, “It is finished” (not “I am finished”), He meant His redemptive work was completed. He had been made sin for people (2 Cor. 5:21) and had suffered the penalty of God’s justice which sin deserved. (Blum, Edwin A.: John. In: Walvoord, J. F. ; Zuck, R. B. (eds.): The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures. vol. 2, p. 340)
