The Deception of Pride #1 January 16, 2022
I. The Results of Pride
A. Leads to Exaltation of Self – Daniel 2:37-38; 3:1
Dura was a common name in Mesopotamia for any place that was enclosed by mountains or a wall. “The province of Babylon” (cf. 2:48) seems to require a location close to the city of Babylon itself from which Nebuchadnezzar ruled his kingdom. Archeologists have uncovered a large square made of brick some six miles southeast of Babylon, which may have been the base for this image. Since this base is in the center of a wide plain, the image’s height would have been impressive. Also its proximity to Babylon would have served as a suitable rallying point for the king’s officials. (J. Dwight Pentecost, “Daniel,” in The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures, vol. 1, 1337–1338)
B. Leads to Exaltation Before Others – Daniel 3:2–3
The satraps [officials] were chief representatives of the king, the prefects [captains] were military commanders, and the governors were civil administrators. The advisers were counselors to those in governmental authority. The treasurers administered the funds of the kingdom, the judges were administrators of the law, and the magistrates [sheriffs] passed judgment in keeping with the law. The other provincial officials were probably subordinates of the [princes]. This list of officers probably included all who served in any official capacity under Nebuchadnezzar. (J. Dwight Pentecost, “Daniel,” in The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures, vol. 1, 1338)
C. Leads to False Worship – Daniel 3:4–7
D. Leads to Rage – Daniel 3:8–13
accused = to slander; literally means “to eat their pieces” (Warren Baker and Eugene E. Carpenter, in The Complete Word Study Dictionary: Old Testament, 49)
rage = a feeling of intense anger that does not subside; often on an epic scale (Rick Brannan, ed., in The Lexham Lexicon of the Aramaic Portions of the Hebrew Bible)
