released = To send forth or away, let go from oneself. (Spiros Zodhiates, in The Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament (Chattanooga, TN: AMG Publishers, 2000).
IV. Supernatural Witnesses
A. Curtain of the Temple – Luke 23:45a; Matthew 27:50–51a
Life Application Bible Commentary – The temple had three main parts—the courts, the holy place (where only the priests could enter), and the most holy place, reserved by God for himself. It was in the most holy place that the ark of the covenant rested. The room was entered only once a year, on the Day of Atonement, by the high priest as he made a sacrifice to gain forgiveness for the sins of all the nation (Leviticus 16:1–34)…Most likely, the curtain that was torn was between the holy place and the most holy place. Symbolically, that curtain separated the holy God from sinful people. By tearing the curtain in two from top to bottom, God showed that Jesus had opened the way for sinful people to reach a holy God. (Bruce B. Barton, Matthew, Life Application Bible Commentary, 561–562)
The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah – The Veils before the Most Holy Place were 40 cubits (60 feet) long, and 20 (30 feet) wide, of the thickness of the palm of the hand, and wrought in 72 squares, which were joined together; and these Veils were so heavy, that, in the exaggerated language of the time, it needed 300 priests to manipulate each. (Alfred Edersheim, The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah, vol. 2 (New York: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1896), 611)
Bob Christopher, Basic Gospel - Only the High Priest was allowed to enter and only once a year. When he did enter, he had to take a blood sacrifice. The Israelites knew it as the Holy of Holies, God's earthly dwelling place. To enter into this room was a death sentence. What sinful man could survive in His holy presence?… No one dared go in. As long as the Mosaic Covenant stood, so did the curtain. But that covenant came to an end. Christ's death brought it to its completion and marked the beginning of the New Covenant.
…Those who were in the temple witnessed a supernatural event. An invisible power ripped through the thick veil. They saw the inside of the most Holy place for the first time. The way in was now open.
