A God We Can Trust March 20, 2022
I. The King Declares God’s Greatness – Daniel 4:1-3
II. The King Fears the Unknown – Daniel 4:4–7
afraid = The idea is one of slinking or crawling, such as a serpent or a worm; to back away or tremble in fear. (Warren Baker and Eugene E. Carpenter, The Complete Word Study Dictionary: Old Testament, 233)
troubled = to be terrified, frightened, troubled
III. The King Trusts Daniel – Daniel 4:8–9
A. The King Shared the Dream – Daniel 4:10–18
The “watchers,” is a term used for divine beings of God’s council. It referred to how they were ever watchful over the affairs of humanity; they never slept. (Michael S. Heiser, Supernatural: What the Bible Teaches about the Unseen World—And Why It Matters, ed. David Lambert (Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2015), 22)
The watcher proclaims that the tree will be chopped down, leaving only its stump. The tree and the stump are symbols for Nebuchadnezzar, who, the watcher announces, will lose his mind and become like an animal (Dan 4:13–16). (Michael S. Heiser, The Unseen Realm: Recovering the Supernatural Worldview of the Bible, First Edition (Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2015), 53}
The word translated lowliest means humblest, and Nebuchadnezzar’s father, Nabopolassar, claimed to be of very humble origin. In one of his inscriptions Nabopolassar referred to himself as follows: “in my littleness, the son of a nobody,” “of me, the insignificant, who among men was not visible,” “I, the weak, the feeble.” These statements implied that Nabopolassar was not of royal birth and did not count in society before he became king. (Renald E. Showers, The Most High God: Commentary on the Book of Daniel (Bellmawr, NJ: Friends of Israel Gospel Ministry, Inc., 1982), Da 4:4–18)
B. The King Comforted Daniel – Daniel 4:19a
astonished = to be taken by surprise, dumbfounded; amazed (Warren Baker and Eugene E. Carpenter, The Complete Word Study Dictionary: Old Testament, 1165)
troubled = someone who is terrified, frightened, or troubled (Dan. 4:5[2], 19[16] (Baker and Carpenter, The Complete Word Study Dictionary: Old Testament, 121)
