Hymn

Jesus Saves!

1) We have heard the joyful sound:

Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Spread the tidings all around:

Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Bear the news to every land,

Climb the steeps and cross the waves;

Onward! 'tis our Lord's command;

Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

2) Waft it on the rolling tide;

Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Tell to sinners far and wide:

Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Sing, ye islands of the sea;

Echo back, ye ocean caves;

Earth shall keep her jubilee:

Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

3) Sing above the battle strife,

Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

By his death and endless life,

Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Sing it softly through the gloom,

When the heart for mercy craves;

Sing in triumph o'er the tomb—-

Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

4) Give the winds a mighty voice,

Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Let the nations now rejoice—-

Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Shout salvation full and free,

Highest hills and deepest caves;

This our song of victory—-

Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Hymn

Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee

1) Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee,

God of glory, Lord of love;

Hearts unfold like flow'rs before Thee,

Opening to the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;

Drive the dark of doubt away;

Giver of immortal gladness,

Fill us with the light of day!

2) All Thy works with joy surround Thee,

Earth and heav'n reflect Thy rays,

Stars and angels sing around Thee,

Centre of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain,

Flowery meadow, flashing sea,

Chanting bird and flowing fountain

Call us to rejoice in Thee.

3) Thou art giving and forgiving,

Ever blessing, ever blest,

Wellspring of the joy of living,

Ocean-depth of happy rest!

Thou our Father, Christ our Brother--

All who live in love are Thine;

Teach us how to love each other,

Lift us to the joy divine.

4) Mortals join the mighty chorus

Which the morning stars began;

Father love is reigning o’er us,

Brother love binds man to man.

Ever singing, march we onward,

Victors in the midst of strife;

Joyful music leads us sunward

In the triumph song of life.

Sermon Notes

True Christian Unity        Romans 15:5-6

Where love abounds in a fellowship of Christians, many small offences, and even some large ones, are readily overlooked and forgotten. But where love is lacking, every word is viewed with suspicion, every action is liable to misunderstanding, and conflicts abound—to Satan’s perverse delight. (Grudem, 1 Peter: An Introduction and Commentary, vol. 17, Tyndale New Testament Commentaries, 181.)

 I. Biblical Christian Unity Comes From God – Romans 15:5

patience = Specifically patience as a quality of mind, the bearing of evils and suffering with tranquil mind (Zodhiates, The Complete Word Study Dictionary: NT)

consolation = encouragement, comfort

II. Biblical Christian Unity is Based on Jesus – Romans 15:5

to be likeminded = think the same thing, i.e. be in agreement, live in harmony (A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature, 866)

to be likeminded = to be of the same mind, i.e. to agree together, cherish the same views, be harmonious (Thayer, A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, 658)

III. Biblical Christian Unity Brings Glory to God – Romans 15:6

with one mind = with unanimous consent, in one accord, all together (Zodhiates, The Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament)
