    Acts 13:38–52 ESV
    38 Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39 and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses. 40 Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about: 41 “ ‘Look, you scoffers, be astounded and perish; for I am doing a work in your days, a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.’ ” 42 As they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath. 43 And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who, as they spoke with them, urged them to continue in the grace of God. 44 The next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, reviling him. 46 And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us, saying, “ ‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ” 48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed. 49 And the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region. 50 But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city, stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district. 51 But they shook off the dust from their feet against them and went to Iconium. 52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
    C. Review of the text

    When we last were in Acts 13 together we found ourselves in the second part of Paul’s sermon as he presented a picture of salvation to the Jews and gentiles alike. We Defined Salvation as:
    Salvation: Deliverance from the power and effects of sin
    God is redeems us not by just waving a wand or declaring us to be something we are not. What Paul has been laying out before the crowd is that salvation is found in Christ Jesus the Lord and that salvation comes in that we have been justified in Christ not of our own doing.
    Justification is defined as:

    justification: An instantaneous legal act of God in which he (1) thinks of our sins as forgiven and Christ’s righteousness as belonging to us, and (2) declares us to be righteous in his sight

    Hold on to this very thought as we read the passage and walk through the text together.

    D. Relevance of the text
    Beloved I pray the text this morning will set your heart ablaze to the grace you have recieved in Jesus. By the one man taking our sins upon him that we might come to repentance and Faith in Christ and find ourselves in love with the one that made us right before our creator.

    I. What is forgiveness?

    Acts 13:38–39 ESV
    38 Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39 and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.
    Through this man! What an amazing statement by Paul. Not other name will do. There is none other than Christ can forgive sins.
    Acts 2:38 ESV
    38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
    Romans 4:7 ESV
    7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered;
    Ephesians 1:7 ESV
    7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
    Colossians 1:13–14 ESV
    13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
    This salvation that Paul has been speaking of is personal and for all that stand before him. They have heard the Gospel but now they must decide how to respond. How amazing it is that the Lord provides the way for us and displays his love for us in Christ Jesus making a way for us who have no way. That is the message Paul has this day for each of our heart. He points out clearly that the law of Moses could never free us from the bondage of sin. The mosaic law brought people to the point us seeing their sin and with a need to make a sacrifice before God and they did so over and over. Never coming to a place of compete forgiveness only pointing forward to one that would ultimately be that perfect sacrifice. That is how Paul is interacting with the us and the desire to see us place our faith in Christ and be justified.
    The word used for freed is Diakaiou…This means —the act of clearing someone of trangression, to acquit, to set free, to remove guilt, declare [someone] righteous. OH MY!!!
    Galatians 2:16 ESV
    16 yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.
    1 Corinthians 6:11 ESV
    11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
    One translation of the bible says..
    The New International Version Chapter 13

    39 Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.

    If I am not in Christ at this moment in the court of the Kingdom of God I’m an enemy of the King and can’t do anything to justify myself.
    Baker exegetical commentary:
    The legal declaration of forgiveness, which is Paul’s emphasis, leads to a release from sin, which is highlighted here. The forgiveness Jesus gives sets believers FREE From the legal obligations that sin brought against them and leads into fellowship with God by giving them the Spirit.
    Romans 1:16 ESV
    16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
    Romans 10:11 ESV
    11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”
    Justified is to be free from sin’s bondage. Our savior did that for us by this body being broken for us and blood poured out for us that we might be justified and found in Christ. Do we recognize the power that has been entrusted to us by our God?
    This is the message a dying generation is desperate to hear. This is a message that many people who think they are Christians but are still trying to earn their own salvation are desperate to hear.
    T.S. Paul has shown them the salvation that has been provided for them and the way in which they may repent and believe on Christ but he want to give a warning.

    II. Warning that leads to begging

    Acts 13:40–43 ESV
    40 Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about: 41 “ ‘Look, you scoffers, be astounded and perish; for I am doing a work in your days, a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.’ ” 42 As they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath. 43 And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who, as they spoke with them, urged them to continue in the grace of God.
    Habakkuk 1:5 ESV
    5 “Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.
    Isaiah 29:14 ESV
    14 therefore, behold, I will again do wonderful things with this people, with wonder upon wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden.”
    Paul is simply warning them to not take his words lightly. The words of the Gospel lead to life and death. It is life to all those that believe and death to those who decide they want no part of it. The quote from Habakkuk is speaking of a generation that was warned about the judgement that would come at the hands of the Babylonians. The people made a choice not to hear the words of the prophet and instead were scoffers.
    To Scoff: indicates the manifestation of contempt by insulting words or actions, it combines bitterness with ridicule. One who customarily feels contempt for something or someone.
    The people hear of this judgment and many want beg to hear more from Paul and Barnabas. They want to know more about the way Paul is talking about that allows a person to be justified before God. They encourage them to stay in this grace.
    Acts 11:23 ESV
    23 When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose,
    T.S. One of the amazing parts about the message of Christ is that is brings division and that is what happens when Paul is finished preaching his message. We have a different reaction to the same message.

    III. Different reaction to same message

    Acts 13:44–49 ESV
    44 The next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, reviling him. 46 And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us, saying, “ ‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ” 48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed. 49 And the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region.
    Jews—filled with jealousy and began to contradict them
    Reviling—ridiculing or making fun of someone or something, to speak against someone as to harm or injure in relation to a person
    Paul and Barnabas—speak boldly--
    Boldly—to speak openly about something and with complete confidence.
    Gentiles—Rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord
    The second group does not scoff at the truth but instead comes to a place of repentance and faith and are part of the Kingdom of God. As more came to know the Lord the message spread greatly in the region.
    This is what has happened in Acts as the Lord has gotten a hold of people with the good news of His message. The Spirit of God moves people to share the good news.

    IV. Persecution and Joy

    Acts 13:50–52 ESV
    50 But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city, stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district. 51 But they shook off the dust from their feet against them and went to Iconium. 52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

    Stirred up—only time used in NT
    To cause to begin and to intensify an activity.
    Jews Stir up people against Paul and Barnabas. But understand it is not the people they don’t like it is the message. The message that people are sinners in desperate need of being saved is an offense to those who do not believe. It goes against the fabric of our flesh that is driven by self.
    Paul and Barnabas don’t let it bother them one little bit. They have given the truth away freely that those who might believer would come to know the Lord and they simply move on. They do not let it slow them down in any way. If fact they are filled with Joy and the Holy Spirit as they seek not their own means to an end but the direction and guide of the Holy Spirit.
