- A. Rapport for the TimeB. Reading of the TextC. Review of the TextSaul brought clarity to all involved last week in:
1 Samuel 19:1 ESV 1 And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul’s son, delighted much in David. We then saw the Lord work in David’s life last week by delivering him 3 time in the first 17 verses from the desire of Saul to kill him.D. Relevance of the TextAs we finish of chapter 19 today of 1 Samuel we are going to look at the Spirit of God in the life of Saul and of David at the same time while looking at the Spirit work in the life of the believer in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.T.S. The text this week begins with David seeking shelter with Samuel.I. Seeking Shelter with Samuel1 Samuel 19:18–19 ESV 18 Now David fled and escaped, and he came to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and lived at Naioth. 19 And it was told Saul, “Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.”David had served David faithfully as testified by Saul’s son Jonathon last week.1 Samuel 19:4–6 ESV 4 And Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king sin against his servant David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his deeds have brought good to you. 5 For he took his life in his hand and he struck down the Philistine, and the Lord worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood by killing David without cause?” 6 And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan. Saul swore, “As the Lord lives, he shall not be put to death.”The only reason for Saul to want David dead was simply Jealousy sprung up from pride. This is the reason that Saul wanted him dead and David, with the help of his wife, escapes and goes to Ramah to see Samuel. Ramah is only about 2 miles from Gibeah just so we understand he didn’t run that far.The last we heard from Samuel was in chapter 16 when he was anointing David as the next King of Israel after we had been told that he was done with King Saul.1 Samuel 15:35 ESV 35 And Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. And the Lord regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel.I think that we must understand that for David to run to Samuel shows us just how directed by God the life of David is at this point. Now he is on the run for his life but he doesn’t go find warrior friends to fight Saul or overthrow the government to establish his power. Instead, He runs to Samuel the Prophet, Priest, and Judge. Running to God is a great place to find the peace that we seek. Samuel is God’s representative before the people and David runs to him to tell him all that has happened.Being that Samuel has a long history with Saul I don’t think that anything David says is a real shocker to him. Instead, Samuel takes David in to care for him in his time of need. It is awesome how God connect Samuel with David for the coming events to show us that while we have been watching Saul turn against David, Samuel is still God’s man and desires to represent him well in all that he does still. Samuel has not changed even thought we have not heard from him in a few chapters which could be a few years as we are not told how much time passes between events.T.S. The passage goes from Seeking shelter with Samuel to a Sovereign Spirit SurpriseII. Sovereign Spirit SurprisesMake no mistake about it this passage is Saul making war on God by going after the one God has anointed to be King. Saul is not making a simple mistake or accidently being an offense to God. Instead, he is aggressively going after what he knows in his heart is God’s man. As we looked at the passage in James 4 last Wednesday night it describes what the human spirit will do.James 4:4–5 ESV 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?All of scripture is clear that man’s heart is wicked and bent against the God of all creation. Saul has set himself against God and in doing so is intent of getting rid of David despite any vow he may have taken to Jonathon against the living God. Saul repeats his attack plan from earlier when his daughter foiled his plans.1 Samuel 19:20 ESV 20 Then Saul sent messengers to take David, and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.Saul is going to try and grab David and bring him back to Gibeah to he himself can kill him. See, Saul wants to show that he is in authority but the problem is that he is in the middle of life that is still sovereignly controlled by God whether he likes it or not.Providence--Piper--“the act of purposefully providing for, or sustaining and governing, the world.“Wherever God is looking, God is acting. In other words, there is a profound theological reason why God’s providence does not merely mean his seeing, but rather his seeing to. When God sees something, he sees to it. “This is the problem with our flesh. Saul seeks his own will and God’s Will can’t be stopped. Think with me about Saul for a moment. Does he have the information he needs to know about God? God has used Saul in some amazing way don’t you think? The messengers That Saul sends to fetch David have the Spirit come upon them in the presence of Samuel and the other Prophets of God and they begin Prophesying. This has happened to Saul.1 Samuel 10:6 ESV 6 Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.1 Samuel 10:10 ESV 10 When they came to Gibeah, behold, a group of prophets met him, and the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he prophesied among them.MacArthur--These prophets were declaring the Word of God, probably with musical accompaniment. Saul’s messengers could not fulfill their task of taking David because they were irresistibly led to join the prophets and speak for and praise God. Think about that, you come to drag someone away to be killed and you end of staying around and praising the Lord. But wait...it get’s better.1 Samuel 19:21 ESV 21 When it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they also prophesied. You ready for this! I think the text calls them messengers because of the amazing contrast between Saul and God in the text. Saul believes himself to be rightful king, at this point, and is doing whatever he can to hold on to that power in spite of God. He spent an entire chapter trying to figure out how to beat God and now sends messengers. Who are these messengers? They have a loyalty to the King of Israel to perform the task assigned to them. Understand Saul does not believe in any way that they will not return with David and this entire event will be over. Instead, God takes the messengers of Saul and turns them into his own messengers, messengers of the word of God. WHAT!! Come on!! Seriously, this is just not a fair fight! But God didn’t do it one time but three times. How stiff necked and crooked is Saul to think that if he just keeps sending people this will finally work? This is what God is willing to do to protect his servant David.T.S. We have seen David Seeking shelter with Samuel and a Sovereign Spirit Surprise but now the God is going to bring the text a live in Saul’s own life as we encounter the Spirit Stuns Saul.III. Spirit Stuns Saul1 Samuel 19:22–23 ESV 22 Then he himself went to Ramah and came to the great well that is in Secu. And he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” And one said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.” 23 And he went there to Naioth in Ramah. And the Spirit of God came upon him also, and as he went he prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah.Saul will do what most of us do when our plans aren’t working and the people we are trying to use to accomplish our will are failing. “If you want a job done right you have to do it yourself.”What happens to Saul is different than what happened to the messengers and if you don’t look closely you will miss it. God does not even wait for Saul to arrive in Naioth in Ramah to be around the other prophets to send the Spirit upon him. This would be the very last time that Saul would have the Spirit on him and it is to protect David. Oh, the irony of God using his power and authority over one that does not believe that he has the power and authority to tell him anything. Even as Christians I think we can fail to understand fully the power in the providence of God in our life.Saul does not believe but is gonna be shown. God has him prophesying on his way to kill David.1 Samuel 19:24 ESV 24 And he too stripped off his clothes, and he too prophesied before Samuel and lay naked all that day and all that night. Thus it is said, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”“when Saul reaches Naioth, He is no longer in conscious control of himself, and he strips “off his clothes.” This expression need not entail removal of all his clothing, possibly only his outer garments are involved.“He too” implies that the messengers had done so earlier, but probably only Saul remains in that state for the rest of the day and throughout the night. No longer the legitimate king of the land, he is compelled to put off his royal apparel. The Spirit mocks Saul’s hostility and renders his efforts futile.Once the Spirit had come upon Saul to mark him as the chosen king. But now the Spirit of God come upon him to protect David and to bring Saul low to a place that God is humbling him. But Saul doesn’t take the even that way instead he just comes out fighting.Isn’t it something to see this in scripture. I very much want the details on how Samuel woke up the next morning? Can you imagine the conversation he had with himself?1 Samuel—Looking for a Leader Saul Himself Thwarted by the Spirit of God (vv. 22–24)Think back over the four stories that have come to us in
Psalm 2:4–6 ESV 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. 5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, 6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.”Psalm 59:1 ESV 1 Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me from those who rise up against mePsalm 59:2 ESV 2 deliver me from those who work evil, and save me from bloodthirsty men.Psalm 59:16–17 ESV 16 But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress. 17 O my Strength, I will sing praises to you, for you, O God, are my fortress, the God who shows me steadfast love.Paul Tripp--“You can’t base your understanding of God and what he is doing on your own interpretation of your circumstances. No, it’s your knowledge of who God is and what he does that allows you to understand your circumstances properly.”Philippians 2:9–11 ESV 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.Application--Perhaps highlight the astonishing transformation when Saul himself is overcome by the Spirit. Undeniably, the power of God can lead even the hardest hearts to change. Astoundingly, it turned an adversary into a prophesying instrument of God. For believers, this serves as a powerful reminder of the Spirit's capacity to change people, urging us to allow such transformation within our own lives. 1 Samuel 19:1ESV
