- What can we learn?A. Rapport for the timeEaster Sunday 2025. Wow. How many times have you sat and heard the Easter message of the resurrected Son of God in you life? Around here I pray that its a weekly occurrence that we look into how a resurrected King affects our daily life an how we live as Christian Ambassadors in the Kingdom of God. But as we settle into the word of God this morning we are going to look at three aspects of Easter weekend that changed our world and our individual lives forever.Gonna give you the blanks early on.I. What was in the cup?II. How can it be Good Friday?III. Our King is Alive!B. Reading of the textC. Review of the textD. Relevance of the textI. What as in the cup?
Mark 14:32–36 ESV 32 And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34 And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.” 35 And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”We can only understand the resurrection if we understand exactly what Jesus was accomplishing for us and that begins in the Garden of Gethsemane. In the Garden he goes before his father in heaven to life up prayer for vs. 33 says he began to be greatly distressed and troubled. Jesus the God-man was in his humaness taking heading to the pain and suffering of the next day but that is not what was really troubling him the most. H knew that he would be betrayed, beaten and taken to the cross to suffer the horrible pains of the cross but none of that compared to the cup. This Cup is representative of the wrath of God.Psalm 75:8 ESV 8 For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup with foaming wine, well mixed, and he pours out from it, and all the wicked of the earth shall drain it down to the dregs.Isaiah 51:17 ESV 17 Wake yourself, wake yourself, stand up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord the cup of his wrath, who have drunk to the dregs the bowl, the cup of staggering.Isaiah 51:22 ESV 22 Thus says your Lord, the Lord, your God who pleads the cause of his people: “Behold, I have taken from your hand the cup of staggering; the bowl of my wrath you shall drink no more;Jeremiah 25:15–17 ESV 15 Thus the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. 16 They shall drink and stagger and be crazed because of the sword that I am sending among them.” 17 So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand, and made all the nations to whom the Lord sent me drink it:Jeremiah 49:12 ESV 12 For thus says the Lord: “If those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, will you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. This is the part that you and I must understand this Morning. This wrath was not wrath that Jesus deserved for anything HE had done against the will of the Father. Jesus always did the will of the Father and deserved none of the wrath of God. What we need to know is that wrath was for what you and I often just call our mistakes or bad days. My sin, Your sin was the reason Jesus would feel distressed and troubled that night in the garden. The next day would be horrific for our Savior but it was the wrath for our sin that he would feel that brought his humaness to its knees. WE ARE RESPONSIBLE! No pointing fingers at anyone else. It was me.Full cup of the wrath of God would be poured out upon Christ.Isaiah 53:10–11 ESV 10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. 11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.MacArthur—Christ in His humanity voluntarily surrendered His will to the will of the Father in all things—precisely so that there would be no conflict between divine will and his desires.T.S. If Jesus took this cup for us how can it be GOOD Friday?II. How can it be GOOD Friday? After understanding that Christ took the wrath that we ourselves deserved the next thing to know is that Good Friday had been planned before time even began.Luke 9:51–52 ESV 51 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him.Luke 13:33 ESV 33 Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’God had shown us many times in the Old Testament that the payment would need to be made for our sins.Leviticus 6:24–30 ESV 24 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 25 “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law of the sin offering. In the place where the burnt offering is killed shall the sin offering be killed before the Lord; it is most holy. 26 The priest who offers it for sin shall eat it. In a holy place it shall be eaten, in the court of the tent of meeting. 27 Whatever touches its flesh shall be holy, and when any of its blood is splashed on a garment, you shall wash that on which it was splashed in a holy place. 28 And the earthenware vessel in which it is boiled shall be broken. But if it is boiled in a bronze vessel, that shall be scoured and rinsed in water. 29 Every male among the priests may eat of it; it is most holy. 30 But no sin offering shall be eaten from which any blood is brought into the tent of meeting to make atonement in the Holy Place; it shall be burned up with fire. This day was not a mistake in God’s plan or a bad day it was from eternity past.Psalm 16:9–10 ESV 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. 10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.Isaiah 52:13 ESV 13 Behold, my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up, and shall be exalted.Isaiah 53:10–12 ESV 10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. 11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.Ephesians 1:4–5 ESV 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,1 Peter 1:17–20 ESV 17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of youPrecious blood of Christ atoned for my sinT.S. This all leads us to the last aspect this morning about this glorious weekend and that is Our King is Alive!III. Our King is Alive!Gautama Buddha died 483 BCConfucius died 479 BCMuhammad died 632Joseph Smith died 1844Charles Russell 1916All men who founded “religions” that are still active today in the world and they are all dead and remain dead.We all need to know that if our Christ died and never resurrected then we have nothing.1 Corinthians 15:12–19 ESV 12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.Without the Resurrection—Our faith is in vainMisrepresenting God—We testified that Christ rose from the deadSill in our sins—we are without hopeBut no pitied needed!! Our Savior is alive this very day and that changes everything.A. Reconciled in ChristJesus in his resurrection give you and I the ability to be reconciled to a God that we have been alienated from because of sins our entire life.Romans 5:10 ESV 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.2 Corinthians 5:18–19 ESV 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.Ephesians 2:14 ESV 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostilityEphesians 2:15–16 ESV 15 by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, 16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.B. Justified in ChristJesus took away the guilt of my sins on the crossHebrews 9:12 ESV 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.Galatians 3:13 ESV 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—1 Peter 2:24 ESV 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.Romans 3:23–25 ESV 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.Colossians 1:14 ESV 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.C. Sanctified in ChristHebrews 9:14 ESV 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.1 John 1:7 ESV 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.Hebrews 1:3 ESV 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on highHebrews 13:12 ESV 12 So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood.Ephesians 5:25–27 ESV 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.Philippians 1:29 ESV 29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake,Ephesians 1:3 ESV 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,D. Adopted in ChristGalatians 4:4–5 ESV 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.E. I WILL BE WITH JESUSHebrews 9:15 ESV 15 Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.Romans 6:5 ESV 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.1 Corinthians 15:49 ESV 49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.Philippians 3:20–21 ESV 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.Everything that we are and everything that we have comes through the righteousness of our Lord Jesus Christ and the penalty that he alone paid for in his death and the life that i have been given in his resurrection. The Lord deserves ALL for he poured out his life for mine.Romans 1:1–5 ESV 1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, Mark 14:32–36ESV
