  • Bible Passage: 1 Samuel 25:1

    A. Rapport for the Time
Faithfulness of God to you and I on a daily basis.
    God’s Faithfulness
    B. Reading of the Text
    1 Samuel 25:1 ESV
1 Now Samuel died. And all Israel assembled and mourned for him, and they buried him in his house at Ramah. Then David rose and went down to the wilderness of Paran.
    C. Review of the text
This one end marks the amazing life of a servant of God. I thought we would take the time to see the faithfulness of God in the life of Samuel.
    D. Relevance of the text
My hope this morning as we look back on the life of Samuel is to be reminded of God faithfulness to Samuel all the days of his life and that promise is also ours in Christ Jesus our Lord.

    I. God with Samuel from beginning

    1 Samuel 25:1 ESV
1 Now Samuel died. And all Israel assembled and mourned for him, and they buried him in his house at Ramah. Then David rose and went down to the wilderness of Paran.
In just one verse we lose Samuel in scripture. This ordinary man that God has done extraordinary things with in his life.
Just over a year ago we started our journey in 1 Samuel began with Samuel’s mother Hannah.
    1 Samuel 1:6–7 ESV
6 And her rival used to provoke her grievously to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. 7 So it went on year by year. As often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat.
Peninnah was Hannah’s adversary always reminding Hannah that she has not child and Elkanah her husband was not much help either. But Hannah would go to the Lord in:
    1 Samuel 1:10–11 ESV
10 She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly. 11 And she vowed a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.”
    1 Samuel:Looking on the heart..
This matter goes beyond the particular situation of barren women. We are facing one of the principles of Yahweh’s modus operandi. When his people are without strength, without resources, without hope, without human gimmicks—then he loves to stretch forth his hand from heaven. Once we see where God often begins we will understand how we may be encouraged.
He is the biblical truth!! As long as you think you can fix it on your own in your own power the Lord will not step in to provide the relief needed because we would just take the glory. When we humble ourselves before the God of the universe and place our faith in his abilities not our own is when HE receives the Glory that he alone deserves.
Also: She addresses Yahweh of hosts, cosmic ruler, sovereign of every and all power, and assumes that the broken heart of a relatively obscure woman in the hill country of Ephraim matters to him.
    1 Samuel 1:20 ESV
20 And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked for him from the Lord.”
Samuel’s existence was an answer to prayers of Hannah from a God who could hear his servant.
Out of the heart of Hannah came a prayer for a son that God would use for his purposes to bring praise to himself
Hannah’s prayer in chapter 2 is an outpouring of her heart before the Lord on what he accomplished for her.
T.S. This answer to prayer would be Samuel the one that would become Prophet Priest Judge of Israel.

    II. Prophet Priest Judge

Before we had the great King Saul..we had judges
    Judges 21:25 ESV
25 In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
The Lord was not speaking much in those day because it from our point of view it looks as though his voice is not being listened to in anyway
    1 Samuel 3:1 ESV
1 Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord in the presence of Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision.
But a huge verse for Samuel comes in
    1 Samuel 3:10–14 ESV
10 And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.” 11 Then the Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. 12 On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. 13 And I declare to him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. 14 Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever.”
Remember God was going to do a thing in Israel. What an amazing word from God. Boy did he every do a thing. Eli’s sons are taking off the planet just as the Lord said would happen and Samuel is installed as priest over Israel.
vs. 10—the Lord came and stood in the presence of Samuel. How amazing is our God?
    Judge
    1 Samuel 7:6 ESV
6 So they gathered at Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before the Lord and fasted on that day and said there, “We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the people of Israel at Mizpah.
    1 Samuel 1:15–17 ESV
15 But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. 16 Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.” 17 Then Eli answered, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have made to him.”
Samuel is the last of all the long list of judges.
He is also the first of the prophets.
    1 Samuel 3:20 ESV
20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of the Lord.
    Acts 3:24 ESV
24 And all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who came after him, also proclaimed these days.
    Acts 13:20 ESV
20 All this took about 450 years. And after that he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.
What a kid!! Hannah waited a long time to have a child and yet the Lord did amazing things with Hannah’s heart and the heart of her child from the very beginning. Samuel is an example of what Christ would be fully to us when he came to save the world.
    Hebrews 1:1–3 ESV
1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Jesus is our Prophet, Priest, King(judge) but he is perfect in a way that Samuel could have never been. The OT is always screaming there is a need for a savior.
T.S. The faithfulness of God is shown in the life of Samuel in the way he served God and came to understand his life was not about him.

    III. Faithfulness of God

What God started in Samuel’s life he would bring to completion and finish well.
    Samuel—about making a king
Samuel—obedience to what the Lord commanded
    Samuel anointing Saul
    1 Samuel 10:1 ESV
1 Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said, “Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince over his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. And this shall be the sign to you that the Lord has anointed you to be prince over his heritage.
    Samuel anointing David
    1 Samuel 16:13 ESV
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
David would run to Samuel in
    1 Samuel 19:18 ESV
18 Now David fled and escaped, and he came to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and lived at Naioth.
Look at what God did with Hannah’s boy? God made Samuel in to a change agent for him.
    Philippians 2:13 ESV
13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
    2 Corinthians 3:5 ESV
5 Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God,
    Colossians 1:29 ESV
29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.
    2 Corinthians 10:13 ESV
13 But we will not boast beyond limits, but will boast only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, to reach even to you.
    Philippians 1:6–8 ESV
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. 7 It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. 8 For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.
Summary from Hannah to Samuel has been handed down to David until it fully reaches the time that the Savior of the world would come to sacrifice himself for us.
